This time of year I am often asked to design gift ideas for men. I literally saw a photo of the perfect scarf and thought “I could make one like that!!” A couple nights ago, I actually dreamt about how I was going to create such a handsome piece.
Once I started, it was quite a challenge to put the design in my head into an intricate yet easy to learn cable type stitching and still keep a masculine feel. This is my finished product.
“The Gentleman’s Scarf” will be perfect for the man in your life. Mine was willing to model for me to demonstrate how handsome he looks wearing one. Just in time for the holiday season!
The bulk of the stitches make it very cuddly and soft. (awww!)

Materials:
Although I used Red Heart Yarns in this project, here is a great substitution of yarn that works great as well. Brava yarn by WeCrochet/Knit Picks
–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (2 skeins) 728 Yards. (Color: Charcoal)
–Size J-6.00mm Crochet Hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors
NOTES:
Ch: chain
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
BLO: Work in the Back Loop Only
Scarf
Row 1: With Charcoal, FSC 270 (or ch 271, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across) (270 SC)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, in BLO, SC across (270 SC)
Row 3-4: Repeat Row 2
Row 5: * Ch 3, sk 3 sts, sc in next st, repeat from * Across. (68 Ch 3 spaces)
Row 6: ch 1, turn, Sc across putting 3 scs in the ch 3 sps and 1 sc in the sc’s from the previous row. (270 sc)
Row 7: ch 3, turn, * sk next st, DC in next st, DC in st that was skipped, repeat from * across (Making X’s) (see video for visual instructions)
Row 8: Ch 1, turn, working in both loops, Sc across (270 sc)
Row 9-21: Repeat rows 2-8
Row 22-25: SC in each st across.
Fasten off, Weave in all ends.
To have a cleaner edge, sc across each end of the scarf. Add tassels if you want.

This pattern was so amazing and looks so professionally done! It was also incredibly easy to follow and I even shortened it to just wear around the back of the neck as a fashion piece! I love that it can be manly enough for a man to wear, yet gorgeous enough for a woman to wear! One of my favorite pieces!

I completed row 5 as shown on the video to have 68 ch3 spaces. But when I tried to do 270 stitches in row 6 there were stitches left over. The last chain 3 on row 5 made the row 273 stitches. What am I doing wrong?
Amanda, You might be working sc into ch1 at the end of the rows. Try to adjust your number of stitches to get back to the 270 and when you are finishing off the ends you can use the sc to even out the edge if there’s noticeable unevenness. Hope this helps, good luck 😊

You can definitely make the same amount (271 ch) or any odd number. If you are starting with a foundation single crochet row, FSC any even number. Just like how I show in the written pattern, I FSC’d 270 but if I were to do a chain and then sc across the ch, you should have a beginning ch of 271. I hope this makes sense and doesn’t further confuse you. Enjoy the pattern! ~Nadia
The count on the row where you’re doing 3ch and 1sc is off because 4 isn’t divisible into 270. (you get 67.5). So you will always be short on that row. I’m thinking that the multiple on this pattern should be 4 + 1, rather than 2 + 1. I’m thinking that the original chain should be 273. (272 + 1) rather than 271. Maybe? I’m new at this, so it’s my best guess.
Hi nadia, can i use high bulky red heart yarn for this?
You sure can! It’s a repeat pattern so you can make this as big as you want with any type of yarn and any size crochet hook. Enjoy!
Actually, I checked it, and my correction is accurate. If you make your foundation chain in multiples of 4 + 1, it will fix the problem with that row, and the pattern falls into place. Start out with a chain of 273 instead of 271.

Hi! This pattern is really gorgeous and true to it’s name. Does this pattern use up the 2 skeins of yarn? How much is left? I am trying this out with a different yarn and am not sure how many skeins to buy.
I used about 450 yards of yarn for this scarf. You can use more or less since it is a repeat pattern, you can end whenever you want. Good luck! ~Nadia

Thanks for the pattern. I watched the video then adjusted the dimensions according to what i needed. The patterned worked up very quickly and looks really nice. I like the cable effect a lot. Can’t see how to add a photo, though.
I’m having a problem with Row 5. I end up with 67 ch-3 spaces with 2 sc leftover. I did the math just to make sure, and 270 / 4 = 67.5 not 68, so … help! I just ended up doing the ch-3 and then doing the last sc in the end of the row (even though I couldn’t “skip 3”). Any other suggestions?
Thank you for making this pattern available for free. I’d like to make this pattern for an elderly gentlemen (95) who has “shrunk” with age. He’s about 5’5″…could you tell me how to make the scarf shorter without messing up the beautiful pattern?

I just love this scarf! So does my husband! I love the trick of using the back loop of beginning chain to make “a cleaner edge” . Why did I not think of it! I am thinking of making 5 scarf’s as panels for a blanket like you suggested. Light rose for 3 and dark rose for the other 2 and then connecting them with some kind of lace stitch maybe in white and then make pink rose flowers and green leaves to attach to the dark rose panel and dark rose flowers to attach to the pink panels! And trim all around with white! Thanks for all the inspiration. If I knew how to attach a photo I would!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! It’s hard to find “manly” pattern with crochet and this one fits the bill perfectly! I really enjoyed making this scarf. I’m a beginner and felt overwhelmed at the idea of 270 stitches long rows, but I thought that every single rows added so much definition to the scarf that there was no boredom. I used stitch markers every 50 stitches and that helped too.. It felt easier going for 50 stitches at the time rather than 270. It made the counting faster and they made my life so much easier when I dropped stitches. Once again, thank you very much.

I’m having trouble with scarf. Row six is the problem. My count came out to be 272 SC not 270 SC. The rest of scarf was wrong. I had to take it all out. Is there a fix to this problem.
