Crochet Tutorial: Chunky Wavy Hat with a Pom

Just in time for the coldest days of the year! This chunky wavy hat with a pom is one of the easiest projects you will make this holiday season! This will be a favorite for anyone! Treat all the guys and gals on your holiday list this year! Not only is it cute, but it is incredibly warm! It will be the coziest hat you will ever wear! Guaranteed!

Chunky Wavy Hat
This hat is only 9 rounds and works up really fast, you could make it in an afternoon! Make as many as you can and give them as gifts, sell them on your Etsy shop, donate them to charity, give them to schools so children don’t have to freeze at recess. These hats are so fun to make, you can get very creative and use many different colors or make it one solid color!

This hat is made to fit any adult size head. Watch the video to learn how to make it smaller if you are an advanced crocheter. Just work with multiples of 12 sts.

Ch: chain

Sl st: slip stitch
SC: Single Crochet
HDC: Half Double Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
HDC2TOG: Half Double Crochet 2 Together
DC3TOG: Double Crochet 3 Together

Hat
With Chocolate Ch 3
Rnd 1: 12 DC in 3rd ch from hook, change to Tan, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2. (12)

Rnd 2
: 2 DC in each st around. Change to Navy, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2. (24)

Rnd 3
: *2 DC in next st, 1 DC in next st, repeat from * around, change to Chocolate, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2. (36)

Rnd 4
: *2 DC in next st, 1 DC in next 2 sts, repeat from * around, change to Tan, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2. (48)

Rnd 5
: 3 Dc in first st, *1 DC in next 4 sts, DC3TOG, 1 DC in next 4 sts, 3 DC in next st, repeat from * ending with 1 dc in last 4 sts. Change to Navy, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2.

Rnd 6
: 1 DC in first st.  *3 DC in next st, 1 DC in next 4 sts, DC3TOG, 1 DC in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, ending with 1 dc in last 3 sts, change to Chocolate, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2.

Rnd 7
: 1 DC in first 2 sts.  *3 DC in next st, 1 DC in next 4 sts, DC3TOG, 1 DC in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, ending with 1 dc in last 2 sts, change to Tan, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2.

Rnd 8
: 1 DC in first 3 sts, *3 DC in next st, 1 DC in next 4 sts, DC3TOG, 1 DC in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, ending with 1 dc in last st, change to Navy, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2.

Rnd 9
: 1 DC in first 4 sts.  *3 DC in next st, 1 DC in next 4 sts, DC3TOG, 1 DC in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, ending with DC3TOG, change to Chocolate, sl st to beginning DC, ch 2.

First Earflap:
With Chocolate:
Row 1: HDC 10, chain 2, turn
Row 2: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 6, HDC2TOG, chain 2, turn
Row 3: HDC across, chain 2, turn (8 HDC)
Row 4: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 4, HDC2TOG, chain 2, turn
Row 5: HDC across, chain 2, turn (6 HDC)
Row 6: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 2, HDC2TOG, chain 2, turn (4 HDC)
Fasten off, weave in ends

Second Earflap: 
Skip 15 sts on row 9 of the hat (see video for visual instructions) Attach Chocolate
Row 1: Chain 2, HDC 10, chain 2, turn
Row 2: HDC decrease, HDC in next 6, HDC decrease chain 2, turn
Row 3: HDC across, chain 2, turn (8 HDC)
Row 4: HDC decrease, HDC in next 4, HDC decrease, chain 2, turn
Row 5: HDC across, chain 2, turn (6 HDC)
Row 6: HDC decrease, HDC in next 2, HDC decrease, chain 2, turn DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
Continue to sc around entire hat. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Pom:
See video for visual instructions on how to make a pom and attach to the top of the hat.

Braids:
Take 12 strands of yarn that measure 36 inches and pull half through the bottom of one earflap and tie a knot. There should be 24 strands. Braid using 8 strands of yarn in each bunch, and tie a knot at the bottom. (Do the same thing for the other ear flap).
