The video tutorial is for the size LARGE that will fit anybody that is 5+ feet tall.
Watch the end of the video to get tips on to make yours smaller or bigger.

-Red Heart Super Saver Medium (worsted) weight yarn: (Click links to get yarn)
For the Large size I used approximately 1700 yards of Gray Heather, Small amounts of Black, White, and Cherry Red.
If you cannot get these exact brands of yarn, go to Yarnsub.com to find an equivalent type of yarn.
–Size K-6.50mm AND I-5.50mm crochet hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors
–Stuffing (optional)
Special Stitches:
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
BLO: Back Loop Only
DC: double crochet
Sc: single crochet
HDC: Half Double Crochet
TC: Treble Crochet
DC2TOG: Double Crochet Decrease
HDC2TOG: Half-Double Crochet Decrease
SC2TOG:Single Crochet Decrease
Notes:
Watch the video tutorial to make this smaller or bigger. At the end of the video tutorial I give clear instructions on how to make this smaller. Just stop increasing at the point where you feel it has reached the size you are trying to accomplish, then jump to the directions for row 44 and make it however long you want it to be.
-Ch 2 at the beginning of row/round does NOT count as a stitch. (See video tutorial for clear instructions)
-The Blanket part is made using a K-6.50mm size crochet hook, and all the fins and embellishments are made using the I-5.50mm crochet hook.
-For the Tail Fin, Dorsal Fin, and Eyes, work in the BLO

Rnds 2-3: DC in each st around. Sl st to beginning dc. Ch 2. (10)

(At this point, if it is NOT as wide as you need it, continue established pattern just increasing the stitches evenly until it is as wide as you need it to be. See video for visual instructions)
We will now be working in rows. If you do not want to work in rows, watch the video tutorial for visual instructions on how to make this a full cocoon style.
You can make this however long you want. I did 30 rows, but you can do less or more depending on how long you want to make your shark.
Row 44-74: DC in each st across. DO NOT sl st to beginning dc. Ch 2, turn. (150)
Fasten off, weave in end.
Gum Line:
With I-5.5mm Crochet Hook
Attach Red yarn
Row 75: HDC in each st across. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Teeth:
With I-5.5mm Crochet Hook
With White
Attach to one end
*Ch 6, Sl St in 2nd ch from hook, SC in next, HDC in next, DC in next, TC in next, Sk 3 sts on red gum line, Sl St in next st on row 75. Repeat from * across. (see video tutorial if this part is a little confusing)
Tail Fin
Make 2 with I-5.50mm Crochet Hook
With 2 strands of yarn in Gray,
Work in the BLO
Row 1: Chain 52, DC in 3rd ch from hook and across, ch 2, turn (50dc)
Row 2: DC2TOG twice, DC in each stitch across, ch 2, Turn (48dc)
Row 3: DC in each stitch until the last 4 sts, DC2TOG twice, ch 2, turn (46dc)
Row 4-11: repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have 30 sts
Row 12: 2 DC in first 2 sts, DC across, ch 2, turn (32dc)
Row 13: DC in each st across until the last 2 sts, 2 DC in each of the last 2 sts, ch 2, turn (34)
Row 14-21: Repeat rows 12 & 13 until you have 50 sts.
Do not fasten off, continue to sc around entire piece.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Sew both tails together to make it extra thick, Stuff tail if you would like. Cinch around top to make it smaller, then sew it around rnd 10 of the body. (see video tutorial for this part)
Pectoral Fins
(Make 2) with I-5.50mm crochet hook
With 2 strands of yarn in gray,
Row 1: Ch 17, HDC in 3rd ch from hook and across. Ch 2, turn. (15)
Row 2-6: HDC in each st across, ch 2 turn. (15)
Row 7: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 11 sts, HDC2TOG, ch 2, turn (13)
Row 8: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (13)
Row 9: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 9 sts, HDC2TOG, ch 2, turn (11)
Row 10: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (11)
Row 11: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 7 sts, HDC2TOG, ch 2, turn. (9)
Row 12: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (9)
Row 13: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 5 sts, HDC2TOG, Ch 2, turn. (7)

This fin is worked in continuous rounds. Place stitch marker at the beginning of each round.

Rnd 1: SC 6 in 2nd ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2-3: Sc in each st (6)
Rnd 4: (Sc 2 in next st, sc in next st) 3 times. (9)

Work in the BLO

Rnd 4: (Sc 2 in next st, Sc in next 2 sts) 6 times. (24)
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Add white yarn detail in eye (see video for visual instructions)
Sew to body.
Gills: Make 4 (or as many as you want)
FDC 20
OR Ch 22, DC in 3rd ch from hook and across.
Fasten off with long tail. Sew to body behind eyes.
Finishing:
Sew Eyes to row 13 of gray color from mouth
Sew Pectoral Fins to line 26 of gray color from mouth
Sew Dorsal Fin to line 30 of gray color from mouth.

Ive started this and it is very addictive. Cant stop crocheting when I get home from work. So excited to see the end result. Making for my 22 year old son as the Jaws theme music is one of his childhood memories that he used to love and shreak at and laugh uncontrollably. Cant wait to see his face when I give it to him. Will post a pic when finished and hopefully one of my son sat watching the movie with it on. LOL

Great pattern – but a two and a half hour video takes far too much of my time to watch. I made this pattern, but had a few problems.
One is with the teeth – they curl up. I used Red Heart Super Saver, made them exactly according to the pattern, but they still curl up. I even tried doubling the yarn. How do you flatten them and keep them flat?
I also wasn’t happy with attaching the bottom fin, especially trying to attach it to the double crochets that make up the body. Can you direct me to the point in the video where you explain this?
I don’t know if this will help you, but I just watch enough of the video to figure out each new portion I’m doing. I jot down the time (I.e. 13:24) so that I can come back later for the next step. I think this was really useful with the mermaid tail. Hope it helps.
I had that issue with the teeth as well, I wanted them a bit bigger anyway so after I finished the row of teeth I went back along and slip stiched into each stitch along the teeth, at the tip of each tooth I chained two and did a slip stitch in the second loop from the chain mirroring how she got her points as well. Once I got the hang of it the teeth were still sharp, bulkier and didn’t curl quite as bad. I know I am late to the party but if anyone else down the line has this issue! The pattern is so fun I love it 🙂

Wonderful tutorial, I understand what you mean when you are talking about changing the sizes of this pattern, but I don’t know how to downsize it enough for a baby. Can you please help with a baby pattern. It’s nice to be able to make a baby girl the mermaid tail and the baby boy a shark blanket.

Do you have this shark pattern for children age 8 as this is adult size. Also do you have a mermaid pattern for the age of 8. As I have 2 grandchildren turning 7 in July and would like to try to make them. I’m not expert at crocheting, but I will try. Thank you

I am making the shark and I have a question about the tail. Do you need to use double yarn for the tail.
You can use 2 strands of yarn at the same time if you’d like, but you don’t have to. I did, it just held in the polyfil a little better with the tighter stitches. I hope this helps! Enjoy!
Is the body of the shark made with double yarn as well?

Love your video on the shark!- I finished it tonight & was wondering. How to wash, with stuffing and to soften the project. I know it will be delicate cycle. I used Caron one pound in Grey no dye lot 100% .

I am making the shark blanket for my grandson who will be 9 years in November. I am making it adult size for him because I would like him to be able to grow into it instead of out of it. I added a few touches of my own and crocheted eye sockets and put google eyes in eye sockets. I made my grand daughter a mermaid tail and Daddy sent me a picture text of mommy sleeping in it . So I know Mommy & Daddy will be tempted to slip into the sharks mouth.

Hi i would like to make this for my grandson who is autistic. He likes to put his fingers into the holes and sometimes rips the yarn. Could I make this in a halfdouble stitch instead without changing anything?
You can definitely use HDC instead of Double crochet stitches. You may need to do more rows to make it longer as HDC is a shorter stitch than Double Crochets. Good luck! I’m sure your grandson will just love a gift like this! Enjoy! ~Nadia
How do you correct the teeth from curling?

First of all, I love this pattern and my grandson loves the shark. I just wanted to add that I did not weave off after finishing the body but continued down the opening with a single crochet to add a more finished look. Thanks again for sharing
Can this be made with an open back like the mermaid. I made two of those for my granddaughters & they love them. Want to do the sharks for their brother but like the open back & just closed around the bottom.

I love the patterns – I made 2 mermaids for the twins and now I am working on a shark – I want to make is cocoon style – if I keep chaining 2 and s/c in each round – will it get wider as well as longer … becuase it is wide enough
Just finished a shark blanket for a friends son. Not just any shark blanket, he’s 6′ 6″!!! She knits but doesn’t crochet so I volunteered to make one for him. If I could figure out how to post a photo I’d send one. It required a few modifications to all the fins so they didn’t look strange on such a large blanket, but the pattern was easy to modify! The Dorsal Fin was the only thing I had to re-work as it just didn’t look right on this monster! Thank you Nadia for a great pattern!
