Crochet Tutorial: Poinsettia

Crochet Tutorial: Poinsettia

Native to Central America, the poinsettia flower made its way to the United States in 1828. It was discovered in the wilderness of Southern Mexico by Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett. He was the U.S. ambassador to Mexico at the time. People wonder, “what does a poinsettia have to do with Christmas?” One interpretation of the plant is that it symbolizes the star of Bethlehem, the heavenly body that led the three wise men to the place where Jesus was born.

Another Mexican legend tells of a small girl who only could offer weeds as a gift to Jesus on the night he was born. When she brought the weeds to Jesus as an offering, they blossomed into the plants as we know as poinsettias. These flowers are known as Flores de Noche Buena, which is Spanish for Flowers of the Holy Night.

Today, I have crocheted my very own version of this beautiful flower. It is perfect for adorning a tree, adding to a gift, or using as a decoration throughout the home. In this easy-to-follow tutorial, we create our very own for this holiday season.

  1. These would be great to make in a small scale and add to a clip for a little girls hair bow. I will make for my grand daughter. She loves hair accessories. Thanks! 🙂
