Crochet Tutorial: Flamingo Feet Baby Booties

Crochet Tutorial: Flamingo Feet Baby Booties

I read a quote the other day which said:
Advice from a flamingo
Wade into Life,
Stand out in a crowd,
Spend time with your flock,
Find the right balance
Show your true color,
Keep your beak clean,
And don’t forget to get your feet wet!!

So, with those sentiments, I bring you my Fun Feathered Flamingo Feet Baby Booties! Start out on the right foot, or in this case, the right feet with this great project! Flocks of love were put into making these tiny slippers that pack a big PINK punch!!

These booties are one of the most versatile patterns I have ever designed. Although these slippers were designed for a 6 month old baby, changing hook sizes can increase the size of the pattern for a bit older infant. But I don’t stop there, choose a basic slipper pattern and follow along on the crocodile stitch and add the other embellishments to make your slippers ANY size!! See tips in my Notes section below.

Along with Flamingos, I provide the written instructions to take this pattern from pink to white in these beautiful Sweet Swan Slippers!

I was doing some online shopping when I came across this pair of swan slippers. Here is where I found inspiration to create this lovely pair in crochet!!

Using these guidelines, branch out to make Ducks, Geese, Peacocks, Toucans, Parrots, Cockateils, Pelicans, or any other fun bird! The possibilities are endless! What a fun way to have birds of a different feather, flocking together! Get started here and remember to read the Notes section for these great tips and more!

Crochet Tutorial: How to Crochet a Mandala in an Embroidery Hoop

Crochet Tutorial: How to Crochet a Mandala in an Embroidery Hoop

Over the past couple of years I have collected embroidery hoops and used them for crochet mandala wall art. In today’s blog, I will demonstrate how to make this mandala hoop art for your very own! Start your day with coffee or chai, and crochet!

Lately, I’ve been fascinated making mandala art. I made a mandala for a table covering, and here is my Spring Sun Mandala Vest. It’s no surprise that I made more mandalas in hoops to decorate my wall.

Not all designs on my wall are mine. I used patterns like Sophie’s Universe and some designs from A Creative Being (Marinke Slump) to complete this arrangement. My wall is not complete and there is room to grow! I see more mandala art in our crochet future!

Turn your Mandala into a dreamcatcher!

Here is a color resource and information about Mandalas for guidance when creating yours.

“RED for strength, high energy and passion
PINK for love, intuition and the feminine
ORANGE for creativity, transformation, self-awareness and intuition
YELLOW for learning, wisdom, laughter and happiness
GREEN for physical healing, psychic ability, love of nature and caring
BLUE for emotional healding, inner peace and meditation
PURPLE for all things spiritual
WHITE for spiritual focus
BLACK for mystery, deep thinking and individuality”

Crochet Tutorial: New Beginnings Afghan Block

Crochet Tutorial: New Beginnings Afghan Block

I am a big fan of doing DIY projects and re-purposing or reusing items and breathing new life into something old making it new again. I found this ratty avocado green velvet and tweed ottoman at a garage sale for $1.00. Most people would consider this a piece of junk but to me, I saw so much potential! I brought it home and got to work at designing something that I could cover it with.

Nate and I are in the process of buying a house, and soon we will be moving in and making it a home. Although I plan to live with my parents until our wedding, I will be back and forth between our cities busy getting our home prepared for the two of us to spend our future! I decided to use this ottoman for my first DIY project for our new home.

To make it a perfect square in height and width, I needed to add feet. I glued and then screwed four blocks of wood to the bottom of this piece.

Then, I covered the entire piece in quilt batting to give it some cushion as well as making the entire piece consistent in color hiding all the hideous green.

Once finished, I designed The New Beginnings Afghan Block and replicated and sewed together 5 squares for this slipcover. I named it New Beginnings because that is symbolic of this time in our life…

Crochet Tutorial: Roly Poly Panda Quilt

Crochet Tutorial: Roly Poly Panda Quilt

Searching for inspiration on a new project practically fell into my lap recently! I ran across a wall hanging/quilt project that popped up on my news feed on Facebook of a Fabric Panda Blanket. I was fixated on it and took a screenshot with the idea that I could somehow replicate it using all crochet. The cute peeking pandas pop right out on this blanket and add a touch of whimsy!!

The shape in the quilting world that was used for the original pieces was called the clam-shell. Seeing that replicating the clam-shell shape was going to be a bit of a challenge in crochet that I didn’t want to take on, I decided to create this project using all full circles and half circles.

Picking out my color palette was my second challenge as the template that I was working off of used many shades of printed fabric. How would I achieve a look similar without it looking too busy? I decided to stick with solids on all the shapes however; a variegated yarn might add some fun texture to this piece. Really anything goes!

After counting out all the pieces needed and arranging the color palette, it was a simple repeat project from there. Just crochet 49 full circles and 22 half circles. I made my original circles approximately six inches across, but feel free to make them larger for a more sizable piece. You can also use the same size circles, just multiply to make it larger if you are going for a bigger blanket. Like I said earlier, anything goes!

Below, find the video tutorial and written pattern for your convenience. I love how this turned out and it can be a darling accent hung on a wall in a nursery or child’s room or used as the quilt it was intended. Also, with a few minor adjustments and a little handy artistry, you could add a stalk of bamboo or change these pandas to emojis, puppies, kitties, silly monsters, or any other fun and whimsical character! Let your imagination run wild! Have fun and be sure to share your work here on Facebook when your project is complete!

NOTES:
-Use a smaller hook to make these smaller
-Use a bigger hook to make these bigger
-Watch the FULL introduction of the video tutorial for frequently asked questions and watch the full video for tips on how to make these smaller or bigger.
-You will need 1100 Yards of yarn for this whole project.
-My blanket is 32 inches (82 cm) by 37 inches (94 cm)
-You can use any type of Worsted Weight, Aran, or Bulky yarn to crochet this blanket
-Scroll down to see Materials Section for Color Numbers and See written pattern for how many of each Circle and Half Circle you will need.
-My suggestion would be to not use a dark tone behind the panda ears. As you can see, the ears don’t show up really well in front of the Soft Navy yarn. A brighter color may have been better in that location.
-Different Afghan Sizes can be found in the middle of this page here.

Crochet Tutorial: Dream-Time Mosaic Baby Quilt

Crochet Tutorial: Dream-Time Mosaic Baby Quilt

Designing and deciding on a new pattern is always a challenge. The process begins by choosing something that may be a need such as a gift or something that inspires me in the moment, whether it be for a baby, the home, a wearable, or any other pursuit, I look for motivation from many sources. The inspiration for this Dream-Time Mosaic Baby Quilt came from a quilt pattern that showed up in the News Feed on Facebook of a friend who loves quilting!

The patchwork squares of fabric pieced together, each having a different design, was the basis for this latest project. I asked myself how could I create this same variety in crochet? Creating nine different patches in different stitching and colors provided me with the distinction between these pieces. I put them together like a mosaic giving this crochet quilt the look I was going for.

I used several bold colors, a mixture of different stitches, and a variety of different quadrilateral shapes, to comprise my Dream-Time Mosaic Baby Quilt. This bold and fun piece is sure to add a burst of color to any nursery! Change your colors to match your decor! So much sensory texture in this quilt will provide any wee one loads of comfort!

My biggest obstacle was making sure the measurement of each piece fit within the confines of a reasonable sized baby blanket that did not leave one horizontal row longer or shorter. This arrangement worked out beautifully! Once I laid out all the pieces, assured this mosaic puzzle of crochet pieces would fit, I began the process to attach everything. Finally, I framed my piece in a cute delicate scallop edge.

Crochet Tutorial: Fish Amigurumi

We are “bass-ically” coming to the end of our Valentine’s puns. I “fish” we had more time because I’m having so much “fin!” I have a “boat-load” of material. I’m not being “koi” about it. With only a few days left, I’m not about to “swimmer” down. Instead, I’m over here, “kraken” myself up! I “sardine-ly” try to keep everyone laughing. You know I’m not doing this just for the “halibut.” These puns are an annual event. You may wonder, “”Water” you doing these for, Nadia?” My answer is, “These puns are a big “tank” you for being in my life!” I have always said, “You are my “ray” of sunshine.” You make me want to “Carp-e” Diem, and not “flounder” around anymore. There’s nothing “fishy” about this. My “sole” is truly in making up these puns!

Crochet Tutorial: Mushroom Amigurumi

You may think that making up puns is no “truffle” at all. But, Holy “Shiitake,” it’s not easy!! I “moss” say that I have really taken a “lichen” to this. At least I have “morel” support from everyone. You give me “mush-room” to be creative, so I can “button” down and get these done! Once I get a good pun figured out, I feel like the “porto-bell-o” of the ball! I appreciate your encouragement because that’s what friends are “spore.”

Crochet Tutorial: Hello, Sunshine Granny Square

Crochet Tutorial: Hello, Sunshine Granny Square

I created this Hello, Sunshine Granny Square design to add to our 365 Days of Granny Squares project. It uses variety of crochet stitches to create an interesting design! I hope you enjoy making your square!

A couple disclaimers before you start: Be sure to check your tension and use the correct size hook for your square. I demonstrate with an H-5.00mm crochet hook in the video tutorial, but you can make yours bigger or smaller by using a bigger or smaller hook. Also, if yours turns out wonky when you are finished, you may need to block this square to make it nice and flat.

Crochet Tutorial: Blooming Daydreams Throw Pillow

In summer, we are surrounded by bright color and full blooms that inspire creativity. My Blooming Daydreams Throw Pillow is a menagerie of hues and texture used to create this whimsical cushion. Perfect for a blast of life and color to any room of your home. Change the palette for your decor when you make your very own, or make this as a gift for someone you love!

With interior design leaning toward bohemian inspired decor, this floral accent pillow brings a nice vibe of color to a neutral room. It can offset plain walls of an apartment, and accented with some earthy plants, it can give a fun yet laid back ambiance.

You can toss this pillow on a bed and pair it with some fun throws. It can spruce up a drab bedroom! Don’t want to make a throw pillow? Make more than one of these squares to make a matching blanket!!

The backside of this pillow is a plain solid granny square, you can use that side and make a simple pillow without any floral design, just make 2 of the same square and sew them together and stuff a pillow form inside!
