Turn your work after every round.

Ch 20

Rnd 1: DC in 3rd ch from hook and across, 3 DC in last ch, continue working on opposite side of foundation chain, DC in each st across, 2 DC in last st, Sl st to first st (not the ch 2 – that ch 2 does NOT count as a st), Ch 1, TURN. (38 sts)

Rnd 2: Stacked Single Crochet in first st (see video tutorial on how to do that here), DC in each st around, Sl st to first stacked sc st, Ch 1, Turn.

Rnds 3-7: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnd 8: *FPDC on first st, BPDC on next st, repeat from * around, sl st to first FPDC, Ch 1, Turn.

Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd 8.
You may continue to make yours longer if you need to by repeating Rnd 8 once or twice more.

Boo! Don’t be scared, it’s just Nasir wishing you a Spook-tacular Halloween!

This year was HARD! Each year I set my bar high to create a new family Halloween costume. It’s tradition. I plan it early on, start it early in the summer, order yarn months in advance… the whole nine yards. Life got in the way. I had another surgery this year in May, of course with complications. Was down all summer recovering. Nas started pre-school on top of his ABA therapy program. It all was a lot. So when the time came this year, I was only able to get one costume completed and it was this sweet ghost.

Nas has been telling me that he wants to be a ghost for Halloween for two months now. I finally found time to make him a costume. As simple as it is, he added his ever so subtle touches with his scary stance and silly poses! He’s fully committed to being the best ghost possible!

Nasir has been growing and changing SO MUCH! Therapy has been working wonders, and in the past several months, he has found so many new words and skills.

The holidays went pretty well, and he had a lot of fun participating in all the activities. Because of his high energy, we decided to outfit him with some snowboarding gear, and Nate took him out for a trial run. He loves it!

It was the inspiration for the Evergreen Ski Hat. I’m so excited for my guys to be matching up both in fashion and in fun!! I used Brava Yarn in Dublin green. The perfect color for my Irish husband! You can make this for anyone! The design is both feminine and masculine and adding a pom or different color can make this customizable for you or someone you love. It’s a great beanie design that I know you will want to make now! Here’s my free pattern!

It’s that time of year again! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Every year, we try to create something unique and fun to share here on YARNutopia. This year is no exception, and we have decided on some friendly monster costumes.

Nate pulls off the big blue monster very well! For his costume, I created the fuzzy hat with horns. I purchased the furry costume from Amazon and voila it was the perfect match!

–Lion Brand Yarn A Star is Born Oh Baby Yarn in Turquoise (2 balls)
-Lion Brand Homespun Yarn in Purple Haze (less than 25 yards)

–Yarn Needle

Make 2 in the gray yarn

Ch 2
Rnd 1: 4 SC in 2nd ch from hook. (4)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in next st, SC in the rest of the sts around. (5)

Rnd 3: SC in each st around. (5)

Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 2. (6)

Rnd 5: Repeat Rnd 2. (7)

Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 2. (8)

Rnd 7: SC in each st around. (8)

Rnds 8-17: Repeat Rnd 2.
At the end of rnd 17, you should have 18 sts around.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Sew horns to the hat in the top front (see photos for reference on positioning)

Assembly step:
Cut a TON of 4 inch strands of the turquoise yarn and the homespun purple yarn
loop 1 or 2 strands around the front loops you left unworked on the hat and tie them in knots (this is a very tedious part of the hat, but it’s worth it!)
Make the purple spots first, then go in and add the turquoise yarn. I skipped 2 sts between attaching yarn so it wouldn’t be too fluffy but you can add or do less. The monster hat I made has 4 medium sized purple spots on the head. Don’t worry about uneven strands, after all the strands are attached, you will give the hat a haircut to your liking!

Christmas may be behind us, but the New Year is just ahead, or, if you live in a climate like mine, it really doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, my Winter Cat Hat is all you need to get through those cold and snowy days!!

This luxuriously cozy hat is not only functional, it is SO CUTE! You will be in style on the slopes or on the go with this fun and furry hat!!

Rows 17-19: Ch 2, DC BETWEEN each st across, Turn.

Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.

Assembly Step: Use extra yarn to shape 2 ears in the top corners of the hat. I just sewed a piece of yarn to make pointed ears and tied it off and wove in the ends.
Add 2 braids to the corners where the fur and regular yarn meet. See photos for reference.

The holiday season is upon us and I am so excited! I love cozy hats and scarves this time of year and I couldn’t resist making a new hat for the season! Introducing my super soft Holiday Stocking Hat! I used Vel-Luxe yarn for the main part of the hat, Go for Faux yarn for the fur brim and a furry pom I found at the craft store. Covering the Brim of the hat:

Attach yarn to BLO of the first unsewn stitch on the front of the hat (for the large adult size there should be 15 free stitches to work in)

I could not help myself and had to jump on the Big Cat train. You never know when you will get inspired and what will lend itself to that inspo. A recent streaming docu-drama became the precipice to making my Big Cat Tiger Hat, and who better to demonstrate how adorable this hat is than Nasir?

Using the selections of yarn in my present stash (due to quarantine, I am limited to finding projects to which lend themselves to what I have because making a yarn order is off the table for the time being) I decided to construct a tiger hat using a selection of Red Heart Yarns in Hygge, With Love, Soft, and Super Saver.

Here is the step by step pattern that will walk you through this project so you can make your very own.

Due to the constraints that our present situation has put on us. I am continuing the practice of SAFER AT HOME. Therefore, am unable to film a detailed video tutorial right now. Once the mandate is lifted and I am able to travel, my dad and I hope to film this project. A detailed piece like this deserves a top notch video tutorial for everyone. In the meantime, I hope this will suffice.

Introducing my Family Fair Isle Hat. This is a fun pattern for everyone! OOOH Yeah! This is the perfect hat for the season, for the family, for ANYONE on your gift giving list-and don’t forget to make one for yourself! I have provided you the pattern to make one in several sizes-baby, youth, teen/adult, XL adult, and I took the guess-work out of this pattern for you. In our family photos, I have done a variation on the color scheme in each hat using the beautiful colors provided by Marly Bird’s Chic Sheep yarn. Find the selection of colors here! You can find the perfect combination for everyone.

One of the loveliest things about this pattern is the versatility. Not only can you make it in any size, you can use a yarn pom, no pom,or a furry pom found here. You can keep the earflaps or make it a simple beanie or ski hat and leave them off. You can put braids or tassels on the earflaps – MAKE IT YOUR OWN! With Brim Color (I used Polo in my hat)

Small: Chain 56
Medium: Chain 72
Large: Chain 80 (this is the size I demonstrated in the video tutorial)
X-Large: Ch 96
(You can chain any multiple of 4 that fits around your head and make this pattern according to the instructions)

Rnd 1: Sl st to your first chain to form a large ring, Ch 1, HDC in each Ch around, sl st to the first HDC, Ch 1. (56, 72, 80, or 96 sts)

Rnds 2-5: FPHDC on first st, *BPHDC on next st, FPHDC on next st, repeat from * around ending with BPHDC on last st, sl st to first st, Ch 1.

Fasten off brim and change color to Linen

Attach Linen to any stitch around. Ch 1

Rnd 6: SC in each st around working in the top of the stitch, do not join (continue to work in continuous rounds for the rest of this hat

Rnds 7-8: SC into each st around (see video tutorial for visual instruction on working INTO the stitch and not in the top loops of the stitch) This will create the Knit looking stitches.

NOTE: Work OVER THE TOP of your unused yarn when changing colors so frequently during the rounds. This will save you from having to sew in so many loose ends. (See video tutorial on this technique)

Fasten off Linen and change to your main color. I used Lipstick red in my main color of the hat.

Rnd 9: Attach Lipstick Red to any stitch around, Ch 1, SC INTO each st around.

Rnd 10: SC with Main Color in first 3 sts, *Change to Linen after the 3rd stitch and put ONE SC of Linen in the next stitch, Change color right away back to your main color, and make a SC in each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * around ending with a SC of Linen in the last stitch, switch back to your main color right away for the next round. (If this is written confusing, please see the video tutorial for visual instructions).

It is quite difficult to explain in writing, until you know what’s being explained. Moving on.

Rnd 11: With your main color, SC INTO each st around (you will not be changing color at all during this round)

Rnd 12: With your main color, SC in the first st, Change to Linen after that first st, * put ONE SC of Linen in the next st, Change color right away back to your main color, and make a SC in each of the next 3 sts, Change color to Linen after the 3rd st, repeat from * around, ending with SC of Main color in the last 2 sts, Do not change color for the next round.

Small: Rnds 13-26: Repeat Rounds 9-12

Medium: Rnds 13-34: Repeat Rounds 9-12

Large: Rnds 13-38: Repeat Rounds 9-12

X-Large: Rnds 13-46: Repeat Rounds 9-12

Cut your Linen yarn, you will no longer need it.

The next round after you are finished with the fair isle design:

All sizes: [SC in next 2 sts, SC2TOG] repeat around. (This decreases the top to cinch it closed)

Last round: [SC in next st, SC2TOG] repeat around (decreased more)

Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Cinch the top closed with the yarn you cut and tie it off to close the top of the hat.
add a pom to the top of the hat.

Earflaps: MAKE 2

All sizes:
Ch 13
Row 1: HDC in 2nd ch and each ch across, Ch 1, Turn. (12)

Rows 2-5: HDC in each st across, Ch 1, Turn. (12)

Row 6: HDC2TOG, HDC in next 8 sts, HDC2TOG, Ch 1, Turn. (10)

Row 7: HDC in each st across, ch 1, turn. (10)

For those of us who are all about wearing fabulous accessories, let me present The Bow-tastic Hat!! This hat allows for you to interchange the bow in order to match your #OOTD (outfit of the day)!! This winter wear provides lots of chances to take one item and change it up to match several things in your child’s (or your own) wardrobe without investing in numerous looks! Perfect for keeping things to a minimum while getting the maximum looks from one great piece!

For larger sizes, increase with the established pattern. For Child Size: increase to 72 sts, For Teen Size: increase to 90 sts, For Adult Size Increase to 99 sts. Then go on to making the next row.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, HDC in 6 sts, Ch 6, Sk 6 Sts, HDC in 24 Sts, Ch 6, Sk 6 sts, HDC in last 12 sts, Sl st to first st, Turn. (For this round, if you are making larger sizes, just mark 6 stitches on each side of the circle to make the horns and create your ch 6 spaces across from each other)

Attach main color to one of the open holes on the hat (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, HDC in each st around, sl st to first st, turn. (12)

Rnd 3: Mark the stitch toward the crown of the hat (see video tutorial for specific location), Ch 1, HDC in each st until the marked st, HDC2TOG, HDC in the rest of the sts on the round, sl st to first st, turn. Move stitch marker up where your decrease stitch is located. (11)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, HDC in each st until the marked st, HDC2TOG, HDC in the rest of the sts on the round, sl st to first st, turn. Move stitch marker up where your decrease stitch is located. (10)

Rnds 5-8: Repeat Round 4 until you have 6 sts left.
Fasten off with long tail, Sew the end of the horn closed.
Repeat this for the other horn so you have two horns.

Eyes: Make 2

Rnd 2: With Chamomile White, Attach to any stitch, Ch 1, 2 SC in each st around, sl st to first st, fasten off. (12)

Rnd 3: With Glow Worm, Attach to any stitch, Ch 1, [2 SC in next st, SC in next st] 6 times, sl st to first st, Fasten off. (18)

Rnd 4: With Flamingo, Attach to any stitch, Ch 1, [2 SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts] 6 times, sl st to first st, Fasten off with long tail for sewing. (24)

Assembly Step:
After you make both eyes, Sew them to the hat using the long tail you cut for sewing. To make the extra yellow detail, take yellow yarn and wrap it around and around sewing the eye to the hat. (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Teeth:
With Chamomile or any white yarn

Hygge (/ˈhjuːɡə/ HEW-gə or /ˈhuːɡə/ HOO-gə) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfort with feelings of wellness and contentment. That is exactly what this Soft Hygge Beanie Hat is—cozy and comfortable! Using the Tunisian Simple Stitch and new Hygge Yarn from Red Heart Yarns, this design can be worked up in less than 2 hours!

The Warm and Fuzzy Headband is just what I needed following a fresh Wisconsin snowfall!! So I made one up and had to share this fantastic pattern with you!! This couture headband is just what you need to top off your snow day wardrobe! I added a fuzzy pom to complete this design which is patterned after snowflakes and a big fluffy snowball!!

The Pom is snapped on using heavy duty snaps so you can interchange poms of different colors to match your outfit! See how this piece is made in my step by step video tutorial and pattern below!

Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and across, sl st to first SC. (72)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, SC in first 3 sts with Gray, *change color to white, SC in next st, Change color to gray, SC in next 3 sts, repeat from * around, ending with SC with white in the last st, sl st to first stitch with gray yarn.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, Extended SC in each st around working into each stitch between the vertical lines (See video tutorial), Sl st to first SC.

You can use 1 strand of yarn or 2 strands of yarn for this part:
Ch 16 (or any amount that is the height of the hat) See hat heights here!
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 chs, HDC in the rest of the chs across, ch 1, turn. (15 sts)
Row 2: (WORKING IN THE 3rd LOOP of the HDC sts) HDC in each st until 3 sts remain, sl st in last 3 sts, See video tutorial for visual instructions, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 3: SC in the 1st 3 sts, (WORKING IN THE 3rd LOOP of the HDC sts) HDC in the rest of the sts on the row, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for however long you need to make your piece. (I ended on row 24), you need to end on a repeat of row 3 before you fasten off.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Sew up back seam and cinch top closed.
Weave in ends.

Brim:
Attach ONE STRAND of yarn to the brim of the hat
Rnd 1: Ch up 1, SC evenly around the brim (I SC’d 24 sts around), Sl st to first SC.
Rnd 2: CH up 3 (counts as DC), DC in each st around, Sl st to ch up 3 st.

SC: Single Crochet
SC2TOG: Insert Hook in previous stitch, YO, pull through, Insert hook in next st, YO pull through, YO pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Pattern:
Ch 18 (or any amount that is the height of the hat) See hat heights here!
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, ch 1, turn. (17 sts)
Row 2-5: Sl st in each st across, ch 1, turn. (17)
Row 6: SC in 1st st, SC2TOG in each st across (This is not a normal SC2TOG, please see Special Stitches and the Video Tutorial for a visual explanation), ch 1, turn.
Rows 7-11: Sl st in each st across, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 6-11 for however long you need to make your piece. (I ended on row 54), you need to end on a repeat of row 6 before you fasten off.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Sew up back seam and cinch top closed.
SC around brim a few times working in the BACK LOOP ONLY to clean up the edge.

Assembly:

Sew in all loose ends, and make a large pom to add on top! (See video tutorial to learn how to make a giant pom)

As many of you may recall, each year I design, create, and model an EPIC cosplay costume ensemble for Halloween. If you have been following my blog, you remember 2 years ago my Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter Costumes here or last year, The Beauty and The Beast costumes here.

Each year I try to challenge myself to something new. I began my 2017 costumes over the weekend and will release pieces over the next few months just in time for Halloween. Each video tutorial and written pattern will be FREE, and although many patterns will be related to the costume ensemble, several will be great to create on their own!!

One such piece is this Link to Past Stocking Cap. This unique Phrygian Cap is the first in a series of several videos that will be made to complete our costumes as Link and Zelda!! For those who are on my social media, it didn’t take long for the guesses to come in and easily many of you knew immediately what I was in the process of creating.

This design is very versatile. If you are not a fan of the video game or gaming scene, this can be made in any color as just a stocking hat in time for cooler weather. You can even use two tones by making your reverse single crochet stitches in a complimentary color to the hat. Red and White would make a peppermint swirl, or Red and Green would make a cute holiday hat. Removing the side laces and adding a bell on the end of the conical shape would make a darling elfin hat!

There are many fun ways to explore broadening this pattern to other great creations! For those of you who are on board to see what I create for Halloween, stay tuned for the next several weeks as I reveal more pieces for this EPIC cosplay creation. Nate and I are very excited to share another great costume with our wonderful YARNutopia community!

You asked and I answered. I’ve decided to join the group of designers who have been trending this hot item. I made my own version of the messy bun hat! Here’s the “Let Your Buns Out Hat!” Show love to my momma for being my messy bun hat model! Yes, that’s MY MOM! I typically model my finished items, but I cover my hair so I was lucky enough to have my mom model my item for me.

I went ice skating and saw someone wear a hat that was not crocheted, but it had different textures and sections with a brim. That was my inspiration for this design. I created 3 sections, each with different stitching, I crocheted around a hair tie elastic to make an opening for a messy bun. This whole project took me 2 hours to complete. The notes section below shares information on how to make different sizes.

Most of you know that I get inspiration from a variety of ways when creating my pieces. “The Enchantress Bonnet” is no exception. It reminds me of the enchantress from ancient literature or from a character in a fairy-tale.

Recently, I started binge watching the series “Once Upon A Time” on Netflix. This series is a drama series that brings fairytales to life and intertwines characters from stories I remember as a child. I’m totally addicted to this show! I’ve noticed that I adore the costumes worn by the characters. I had seen a hood design and I fell in love with it. I love the texture from the crocodile stitch combined with the front post and back post half-double crochet. It looks very detailed and complex.

Materials:
-Approx. 430 Yards of Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice in “Mountain Print”
-Approx. 315 Yards of Red Heart With Love in “Chocolate”
–Size J-6.00mm Crochet Hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors

NOTES:
This hat is made to fit any adult size head. Watch the video to learn how to make it smaller if you are an advanced crocheter. The written pattern is for the ADULT SIZE ONLY.

Ch: chain
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SC: Single Crochet
HDC: Half Double Crochet
FPHDC: Front Post Half Double Crochet
BPHDC: Back Post Half Double Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
V-Stitch: Double Crochet, Ch 1, Double Crochet all in the same stitch
Crocodile Stitch: 5 DC around 1st DC of V-Stitch, ch 1, 5 DC around 2nd DC of V-Stitch

Hat
With Mountain Print Ch 117
Row 1: 1 HDC in 2nd ch from hook and across. (116)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, (counts as stitch) *FPHDC around next st, BPHDC around next, repeat from * Across. HDC in last st.

Row 3: Ch 2, turn, (counts as stitch) *BPHDC around next st, FPHDC around next, repeat from * across. HDC in last st.

Rows 4-20: Repeat rows 2 & 3, ending on a repeat of Row 2.

Row 21: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 9 sts, * sc2tog, sc in next 10 sts, repeat from * across until you have 11 sts left. sc2tog, sc in last 9 sts. Do NOT fasten off. Change color to Chocolate (See video for visual instructions for this part)

Crocodile stitch section:

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, dc in first st, sk next st, *V-stitch, sk next 2 sts, repeat from * across to last 3 sts, V in next st, sk next st, dc in last st.

Row 2: Turn, sl st in first dc, *work crocodile stitch around next V-stitch, skip next V-stitch, repeat from * across, work scale around last V-stitch, sl st in last st.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, dc in first st, *V-stitch in center of next scale, V-stitch in skipped V-stitch, repeat from * across, V-stitch in center of last scale, dc in last st.

Row 4: Turn, sl st in first 2 dc and in ch space of first V, *work crocodile stitch around next V-stitch, skip next V-stitch, repeat from * finishing with scale in next V-stitch, sl st in ch space of last V and in last 2 dc.

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, DC in first st, *V-stitch in skipped V-stitch, V-stitch in center of next scale, repeat from * across, finishing with V-stitch in last skipped V-stitch, dc in last st.

Row 6-10: Repeat Rows 2 – 5, then repeat row 2 once more.

Do NOT fasten off, remove your hook and sew up the back

Sewing up the back:
Fold work in half, with right sides together, so that Row 10 forms the front of the hat. Sew back seam. Turn hat right-side-out again. (See video for visual instructions on this section)

Continue with crocheting:

Pick up loop from last stitch of previous section, and turn work so you are now working in the sides of the rows along the bottom:

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc evenly spaced along sides of rows all the way around the bottom of hood. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Braids:
Take 12 strands of yarn that measure 48 inches and pull half through the bottom of one side of hood and tie a knot. There should be 24 strands. Braid using 8 strands of yarn in each bunch, and tie a knot at the bottom. (Do the same thing for the other side). See video tutorial for visual instructions on this section

As many of you have seen, I cover my hair. When I go out for a quick run to the grocery store, I’ll throw on a beanie really fast and run out the door! My go-to hats are these super slouchy ones. Today’s video is on how to make one of these great projects.

When I’m out and about wearing this hat, I get so many compliments and people ask me where I got it. I love to tell them I made it myself, and you will too!

Whenever I have made my version of this hat, I always use yarn that has very vibrant colors and different variations of jewel tones. This example in today’s blog uses Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn in the Stained Glass color.

This super slouchy multicolored beanie can be worked up in an afternoon! I promise, you will get years of wear out of each hat you make! They make great gifts, not just to yourself, haha, but to others!

At the very end of the video tutorial, I explain how to make it smaller for child sizes. The written pattern is for a teen/adult sized hat.

You could add your own embellishments by adding buttons, a bow, or any other fashionable item to make it your own!

-Some crocheters have mentioned that this hat turned out a little smaller for them. Maybe going up a hook size or decrease to Round 23 or 24 and then jump to the instructions for Rounds 26-29.

HDC2TOG: Half Double Crochet Decrease: Yarn over, go into the next st, yarn over, pull through, go directly into the next stitch, yarn over, pull through (You should have 4 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. HDC Decrease made.
