Crochet Tutorial: Let Your Buns Out Hat

Crochet Tutorial: Let Your Buns Out Hat

You asked and I answered. I’ve decided to join the group of designers who have been trending this hot item. I made my own version of the messy bun hat! Here’s the “Let Your Buns Out Hat!” Show love to my momma for being my messy bun hat model! Yes, that’s MY MOM! I typically model my finished items, but I cover my hair so I was lucky enough to have my mom model my item for me.

I went ice skating and saw someone wear a hat that was not crocheted, but it had different textures and sections with a brim. That was my inspiration for this design. I created 3 sections, each with different stitching, I crocheted around a hair tie elastic to make an opening for a messy bun. This whole project took me 2 hours to complete. The notes section below shares information on how to make different sizes.

Crochet Tutorial: Hometown Honey Sunhat

Crochet Tutorial: Hometown Honey Sunhat

For the first time, I tried my hand at crocheting with raffia yarn. It was definitely an interesting experience in trying something new. I made this floppy brim Hometown Honey Sunhat! Just in time to protect yourself from the rays! Whether on the beach or in the garden, this will come in handy!

Working with raffia while creating this hat was interesting. I may have to try again on another project to fully provide a fair opinion of this type of yarn. I ran into a few frustrating challenges, but still managed to achieve a decent result. Some tweaking and blocking this hat pattern will continue to improve its look.

Hometown Honey Sunhat2
When working with Raffia Yarn, always remember, you will have to give your hands a rest from time to time. Depending on the type of Raffia you use in your project, it can be a little rough on the hands.

Hometown Honey Sunhat3
In making this hat, my initial concern was over the hook size because of the pattern it was creating. The yarn looks thick/bulky, but it is actually quite thin when you start working with it. It created a stitch that wasn’t as tight as I expected it to be using my G6 crochet hook. Be aware of that when you start your project. This Raffia yarn is also not as firm as I expected it to be in the final product.

Hometown Honey Sunhat
When I wore the hat, the brim of the hat was very floppy and did not hold a firm shape. I had a feeling that would happen while I was crocheting this in the video tutorial. At that point, I realized I had to do something to acquire the the wide brim look that I was hoping for. I decided to block this piece after I had my dad photograph it.

Below you will see the photo of the hat in the blocking process. I pinned it to a towel and saturated it with water. It will be dry within 24 hours and it should hold a better shape. Upon doing further research, I have learned that you can also starch raffia/straw sunhats by using liquid spray starch or making your own starch with 16 oz. of hot water mixed with a tablespoon of corn starch. You can spray the mixture on your hat. It will not wreck it, and it will give you a more desired shape.

For those of you who want a floppy brim, the original result will give you that. It’s cute no matter what!!
