Candy Swirl Pillow Remix

Candy Swirl Pillow Remix

I was browsing through Instagram, and I came across a fun living-room set up that was decorated in shades of grey and white. There were a lot of yarn accents including a collection of throw pillows throughout the room. Several were fun knit or crochet looking patterns that really caught my eye. It really started to give me some inspiration.

Some of you may recall, last Halloween, Nate and I wore cosplay costumes inspired by Willy Wonka. Part of the set up we had included the Candy Swirl Pillows. Today, after seeing all the fun ways to dress up a room with throw pillows, I decided to embellish my already existing pillows with some poms to give them a little fun boho flair! This is the Candy Swirl Pillow Remix! Simply put, I took an old pillow, with a little bit of tweaking, I made it new again! How fun it is to add a small detail and change the look of this project!

Get the pattern for the pillow covering here!

Here is a step by step photo tutorial of how I made my poms.

I received this cute pom maker from pommaker.com, so I am using that today. You can click the first photo below to shop for these fabulous pom makers!

First I wrapped the yarn around each of the wooden pieces (there are instructions in the pom making kit to walk you through)

Then I cut the yarn.

Once they are both wrapped and cut, I put the outer pieces on the spokes of the inner wooden pieces.

Then I squeezed with one hand, and cut the strands down the middle with my other hand.

That’s what it looks like when all the pieces are cut! I had to be sure not to let go of it at this point!

Then I took a long strand of yarn and tied a few knots around the center of these little strands, as you can see in the photo below.

Then I popped off all the pieces and a pom was made!!

I trimmed any longer strands to make it a perfect pom!

Here is the pillow I made and added poms to the outer edge!

Crochet Tutorial: Roly Poly Panda Quilt

Crochet Tutorial: Roly Poly Panda Quilt

Searching for inspiration on a new project practically fell into my lap recently! I ran across a wall hanging/quilt project that popped up on my news feed on Facebook of a Fabric Panda Blanket. I was fixated on it and took a screenshot with the idea that I could somehow replicate it using all crochet. The cute peeking pandas pop right out on this blanket and add a touch of whimsy!!

The shape in the quilting world that was used for the original pieces was called the clam-shell. Seeing that replicating the clam-shell shape was going to be a bit of a challenge in crochet that I didn’t want to take on, I decided to create this project using all full circles and half circles.

Picking out my color palette was my second challenge as the template that I was working off of used many shades of printed fabric. How would I achieve a look similar without it looking too busy? I decided to stick with solids on all the shapes however; a variegated yarn might add some fun texture to this piece. Really anything goes!

After counting out all the pieces needed and arranging the color palette, it was a simple repeat project from there. Just crochet 49 full circles and 22 half circles. I made my original circles approximately six inches across, but feel free to make them larger for a more sizable piece. You can also use the same size circles, just multiply to make it larger if you are going for a bigger blanket. Like I said earlier, anything goes!

Below, find the video tutorial and written pattern for your convenience. I love how this turned out and it can be a darling accent hung on a wall in a nursery or child’s room or used as the quilt it was intended. Also, with a few minor adjustments and a little handy artistry, you could add a stalk of bamboo or change these pandas to emojis, puppies, kitties, silly monsters, or any other fun and whimsical character! Let your imagination run wild! Have fun and be sure to share your work here on Facebook when your project is complete!

NOTES:
-Use a smaller hook to make these smaller
-Use a bigger hook to make these bigger
-Watch the FULL introduction of the video tutorial for frequently asked questions and watch the full video for tips on how to make these smaller or bigger.
-You will need 1100 Yards of yarn for this whole project.
-My blanket is 32 inches (82 cm) by 37 inches (94 cm)
-You can use any type of Worsted Weight, Aran, or Bulky yarn to crochet this blanket
-Scroll down to see Materials Section for Color Numbers and See written pattern for how many of each Circle and Half Circle you will need.
-My suggestion would be to not use a dark tone behind the panda ears. As you can see, the ears don’t show up really well in front of the Soft Navy yarn. A brighter color may have been better in that location.
-Different Afghan Sizes can be found in the middle of this page here.

Here is the pattern I gained inspiration for this project.
