Crochet Tutorial: Chain Weaver Slouchy Hat

Have you ever wanted to try a bit of weaving? How about incorporating a little weaving with your crochet? My Chain Weaver Slouchy hat brings these two crafts together to make one great project! Perfect for cooler nights that are soon to be upon us here in the North, this slouchy hat is very easy to work up and finish in a short few hours. Change the colors to match any cold weather ensemble and this hat will make a great gift!

Materials you will need:
Red Heart Yarns Super Saver (Dusty Grey, Coral, Jade, Bright Yellow, Aruba Sea)
Size H-5.00mm Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle
Scissors

NOTES:
-To make this smaller or bigger, use a smaller or bigger hook size
-This is made from the top down
-This hat will fit any adult person
-See the video tutorial for sizing information.

Special stitches:
Ch(s): chain(s)
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sk: Skip
Sl st: slip stitch
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
HDC: Half Double Crochet
BLO: Back Loop Only
FLO: Front Loop Only

Pattern:

With Dusty Grey
Ch 3

Rnd 1: 9 DC in 3rd ch from hook, sl st to first DC. (9)

Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 2 DC in each st around, sl st to first DC. (18)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, [2 DC in next st, DC in next st] 9 times, sl st to first DC. (27)

Rnd 4: Ch 5 (counts as DC + Ch 2 Sp), * DC in next st, Ch 2, repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch of beg. ch 5. (27)

Rnd 5: Sl st into Ch 2 sp, Ch 5, *DC in next Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, Repeat from * around, Sl st to 3rd Ch of beg. ch 5. (27)

Rnd 6: Sl st into Ch 2 sp, Ch 4 (counts as DC + Ch 1 sp), * DC in next DC st, Ch 1, DC in next Ch 2 sp, Ch 1, repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd Ch of beg. ch 4. (54)

Rnd 7: Sl st into ch sp, Ch 5 (counts as DC + Ch 2 sp), * DC in next Ch sp, Ch 2, repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch of beg. ch 5. (54)

Rnds 8-16: Repeat Rnd 7

Rnd 17: Sl st into ch sp, Ch 1, SC in same ch sp, SC in each ch 2 sp around (this will cinch the brim in tighter), do not sl st to first st, work in continuous rounds and in BLO for the rest of this hat.

Rnds 18-24: SC in each st around working in BLO and continuous rounds.
Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Adding the colorful chains:

To add the chains, just create long chains and weave them in and out of the DC sts on each row. Below I share how many chains I made for each row, but yours might be different depending on the tension of your chains. (See video tutorial for visual instructions on how to weave the chains in and out of the sts)

Rnd 5: 75 Chains

Rnd 6: 98 Chains

Rnd 7: 108 Chains

Rnd 8: 120 Chains

Rnd 9: 140 Chains

Rnd 10: 148 Chains

Rnd 11: 150 Chains

Rnd 12: 148 Chains

Rnd 13: 148 Chains

Rnd 14: 150 Chains

Rnd 15: 100 Chains

Rnd 16: 78 Chains

When Extra Chunky Hats are all the rave, but cost an arm and a leg, we pull out our hooks and we make our very own! I’m introducing the Razzle Dazzle Chunky Hat!! Make it in a single strand (the hat with the pink pom) OR for an EXTRA chunky look make it with two strands of chunky yarn (the hat with the green pom). Whatever way you choose, you are going to raise your temp to extra warm with this fun, colorful hat!!

-You will need approximately 110 yards of yarn for this hat and will fit an ADULT.
-This hat measures 22 inches around the head and 11 inches long.
-You can use one or two strands of yarn in this project.
-Make your slip stitches loose so you can work in them in the next row. (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Faux Fur Pom Poms
Yarn Needle

YO: Yarn Over
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SK: Skip
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
FPDC: Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC: Back Post Double Crochet

Pattern:

If you have any confusion or difficulty with reading this pattern, please watch the video tutorial to have visual instructions.

Pattern:
You can use 1 strand of yarn or 2 strands of yarn for this part:
Ch 16 (or any amount that is the height of the hat) See hat heights here!
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 chs, HDC in the rest of the chs across, ch 1, turn. (15 sts)
Row 2: (WORKING IN THE 3rd LOOP of the HDC sts) HDC in each st until 3 sts remain, sl st in last 3 sts, See video tutorial for visual instructions, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 3: SC in the 1st 3 sts, (WORKING IN THE 3rd LOOP of the HDC sts) HDC in the rest of the sts on the row, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for however long you need to make your piece. (I ended on row 24), you need to end on a repeat of row 3 before you fasten off.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Sew up back seam and cinch top closed.
Weave in ends.

Brim:
Attach ONE STRAND of yarn to the brim of the hat
Rnd 1: Ch up 1, SC evenly around the brim (I SC’d 24 sts around), Sl st to first SC.
Rnd 2: CH up 3 (counts as DC), DC in each st around, Sl st to ch up 3 st.
Rnd 3: Ch up 2 (does not count as anything), FPDC on Ch up 3 st from previous rnd, *BPDC on next st, FPDC on next st, repeat from * around, sl st to first FPDC. Fasten off, Weave in ends.

Assembly:
Sew in all loose ends, and attach large pom to add on top! (Get the pom I used here!)
