Happy Halloween 2022 from YARNutopia!

Happy Halloween 2022 from YARNutopia!

Our Annual Halloween Costume Reveal is here! This year, we have decided on some friendly monster costumes.

Nas loves his one-eyed green monster with horns! He was running around trying to catch pretend monsters and pretend he was one too! He’s such a little goofball!

Nasir’s costume consists of the crocheted green slip-on with a face. I paired that with the green leggings and turtleneck that I bought on Amazon. I used Lion Brand Yarn to create this ensemble.

Nate pulls off the big blue monster very well! For his costume, I created the fuzzy hat with horns. I purchased the furry costume from Amazon and voila it was the perfect match!

For my costume I just made a monster amigurumi doll and wore a pink and purple outfit to tie it all together.

In recent years, it has been difficult to find the time to make elaborate plans for costumes and not be able to get them done. I’ve scaled down quite a bit, but still like to make sure that I’ve included crochet in each costume. I hope you enjoy our monster costumes and keep coming back each year to see more!

If you’d like the crochet pattern for Nasir’s Monster Costume, you can find the written instructions here.

If you’d like the Hat Pattern that Nate is wearing, you can find the written instructions here.

If you’d like to make the little monster plushie I am holding in the photos, you can find the full written pattern here.

Work in continuous rounds for all the pieces in this project.

Ch 24

Rnd 1: 2 SC in 2nd ch from hook, 1 SC in each of the next chs across, put 3 SC in last ch, continue to SC along the opposite side of the foundation ch, SC across, put 1 SC in the first st where you put 2 SC in. (48)

Rnds 2-30: SC in each st around. (48)

Rnd 31: [SC2TOG, SC in next 6 sts] 6 times. (42)

At the end of rnd 17, you should have 18 sts around.
Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Sew horns to the hat in the top front (see photos for reference on positioning)

Assembly step:
Cut a TON of 4 inch strands of the turquoise yarn and the homespun purple yarn
loop 1 or 2 strands around the front loops you left unworked on the hat and tie them in knots (this is a very tedious part of the hat, but it’s worth it!)
Make the purple spots first, then go in and add the turquoise yarn. I skipped 2 sts between attaching yarn so it wouldn’t be too fluffy but you can add or do less. The monster hat I made has 4 medium sized purple spots on the head. Don’t worry about uneven strands, after all the strands are attached, you will give the hat a haircut to your liking!

Enjoy!

Crochet Tutorial: Frederick the Misfit Monster Toy

Crochet Tutorial: Frederick the Misfit Monster Toy

I had the wonderful pleasure of spending a few days with my sweet nephew. On Saturday afternoon, he and I set out to work on creating a character out of his imagination. My nephew chose the colors and the features as well as giving him a name. Meet Fredrick the Misfit Monster! This darling amigurumi was born from the imagination of a very special 4 year old.

Frederick is huggable and silly. He has lost most of his teeth but 3, from eating lots of candy that he sneaks at night. He loves adventures, finds mischief and mayhem, yet loves to cuddle. He protects and scares away creatures in the closet and under the bed or behind curtains! He likes to read books and play games on the iPad. Fredrick is a best friend. This is a great project to involve children. They can choose colors and features, as well as giving their very own misfit monster a name and personality! This simple project is sure to delight any child!!

Crochet Tutorial: Munching Monster Laundry Bag

Crochet Tutorial: Munching Monster Laundry Bag

This Monster has the munchies! My Munching Monster Laundry Bag Hamper is ready to chow down on your child’s dirty laundry. A great way to create a teaching moment and pint-sized responsibilities while having fun doing it! Socks, pajamas, t-shirts, towels, and undies, this monster will gobble them all up! This project uses Red Heart Super Saver Stripes Yarn!

There are a lot of ideas in this one project! Unleash your creativity and turn this project into a body pillow by stuffing it and sewing the mouth closed. You could make it shorter and add straps to the back to make a backpack. Adding a long strap, you could create a cross-body bag. You could put a handle on it and make it a cute Halloween candy sack!

Change the colors and add bows and eyelashes to make this more gender specific. There are so many cute ideas packed into one great pattern!! Have fun!!

Crochet Tutorial: Beast Costume Gloves

As I make progress on the costumes that I am designing for Nate and myself for Halloween, I was puzzled over how to make a pair of Beast Mitts. I pooled over ideas of what would work, what would be comfortable for an evening of partying with our friends, what would look like a pair of paws with claws? All these questions are answered in this pair of open finger gloves.

beast3

These mitts are not meant for freezing temperature days. Just by appearance, it’s obvious why. These are strictly for costume purpose. However, but omitting the finger/claws you would have a basic pair of fingerless gloves or hand warmers.

I used Red Heart Boutique Fur to cover these paws. You are free to use creative choices for the type of fur you would like to use. You can create a different look by using different types of furs.

The pattern can be adjusted for any size hand. In my video, I created this pair to fit a larger sized man-hand. With easy math, you can make this pattern from child size to an XL hand size. Have fun with this costume/prop accessory. It is perfect for so many designs – wildcats, bears, lions, werewolves, beasts, monsters, etc.

beast4

Here is the link to the hat which was the first part of this costume.

Crochet Tutorial: Trick-or-Treat Bag

This is a very easily adaptable pattern that can be transformed into many items besides the trick or treat bag that I originally am making this bag for. It can be made into a tote bag, a handbag, purse, laptop case, iPad case. You can add a drawstring by weaving it through the top of this bag and omitting the handles. There are SO many ideas in one pattern!

Another fun idea with this pattern is to use the base bag and change up the embellishments and colors to make all kinds of neat Halloween fun trick-or-treat bags that will stand out and last for years to come!

Crochet Tutorial: Frankenstein Hat

Halloween is around the corner! This starts the first of a series of seasonal projects. Many times we are often looking for last minute or DIY homemade costumes. My tutorial and pattern take away the guess work on how to put together your own costume using your own crafty talent!

Franky Hat

My video shows instructions on how to make a teen/adult size hat. There is a PDF DIGITAL DOWNLOAD pattern available here to make this hat in 6 different sizes. This is a paid pattern available on my shop.

Franky Hat

You are sure to be a huge hit in this Frankenstein hat this season! Paired with some spooky makeup, you can really get creative with this practical, yet fun, hat!

Franky Hat

View this video tutorial to make the Teen/Adult size Frankenstein Hat:

I used Red Heart yarn in Tea Leaf Green, Black, Red, and Heather Gray. I also used some fun fur yarn for the hair. All of these colors I used less than one skein of yarn, but I do not have exact gauge. I also used an H size hook which is 5.00mm.
