Cowl:
Work in BLO for the whole cowl
Rnd 1: FDC 230 and sl st to first st without twisting foundation row. Or you can Ch 230 or 232 (as I say in the video tutorial) and Sl st to first ch, Ch 2, DC in each Ch around, sl st to first st, Do not turn. (230)
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as st), Work in BLO, DC in each st around, Sl st to first st, do not turn.
Rnds 3-18: repeat Rnd 2 (you can continue and make yours wider if you want!)
Fasten off, Weave in all ends.
Add a DC round of Faux Fur around each edge working between the posts of the stitches on the outer rows of your work. (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

I know that it has been a while since I’ve posted a video tutorial and new pattern. So, I’m taking small steps back to filming to share my Painted Gray Scarf.
The Painted Gray Scarf is the newest pattern Hot Off the Hook!! It is super easy and fun to make. I used Lion Brand Yarn Scarfie to create this stylish design. Here’s the best part: this combination of stitches are a nice repeat and would make a lovely throw, baby blanket, afghan, or shawl. It’s THAT EASY! With a few adaptations of your own, the sky’s the limit.
For me, it’s subzero temps in Wisconsin, I needed a warm scarf. This one was perfect!

As I work my way back to filming regular crochet tutorials, I am also thinking ahead to our annual Halloween costumes. Here is the first of several pieces that will lead up to our big reveal. This is my Chunky Rainbow Pom Scarf. Perfect for the cool weather we are starting to experience here in Wisconsin. The time for warm weather apparel is going to be here before we know it and we need to be prepared! My Rainbow 🌈 scarf can be made exactly how I made it but use your imagination and find your own color combination to match your look! There are many possibilities! These make great gifts for anyone. You can always make it with or without poms to change the look! Now that is versatility!! I used Hometown yarn by Lion Brand Yarn. You will want to grab yours too because the softness is divine!

It’s nearly shawl season here in Wisconsin. That time of year between the warm days of spring and the lingering days of winter, where we need more than a t-shirt but not a big bulky winter coat to ward off the chill of the evening. It’s the perfect time for a wrap or shawl to replace the heavy jackets we have been lugging around for months. Here is my Simple Spring Shawl to help! Simple, because it is a simple stitch throughout. This shawl can be made by anyone. Beginner to Advanced, everyone will be able to enjoy this project. Spring, because it’s the time of year where having a nice soft shawl to wrap yourself in is perfect when you need to keep yourself a little cozy when the breeze blows.
I love a versatile piece, and I love how lovely this one turned out! It can be worn not only around the shoulders, but you can wrap it around your neck as a nice scarf or even around your waist like a mini sarong. You can use my basic pattern as a starting point, but feel free to adjust or add to this pattern to make it the perfect size for YOU.
This shawl makes a great gift. Not only for yourself, but for a bride or bridesmaids, friends or family, people in a nursing home who always feel a little chilled. No matter who you make it for, it is sure to be treasured and used for a long time to come.

I love a versatile piece, and I love how lovely this one turned out! It can be worn not only around the shoulders, but you can wrap it around your neck as a nice scarf or even around your waist like a mini sarong. You can use my basic pattern as a starting point, but feel free to adjust or add to this pattern to make it the perfect size for YOU.
This shawl makes a great gift. Not only for yourself, but for a bride or bridesmaids, friends or family, people in a nursing home who always feel a little chilled. No matter who you make it for, it is sure to be treasured and used for a long time to come.

When you think of boho-style fashion, what comes to mind? Most people might immediately think of bare feet with bell bottom jeans and funky headbands. Although one can incorporate those two fashion pieces tastefully into a modern boho outfit, things have come a long way in modern times! Chic Sheep Yarn has fast become a favorite go-to for some of my nicer fashion pieces for myself and for the home! If I were to start this blog post a year ago, you would have heard my howl of frustration across the globe as I spent most of my efforts attempting to Yarn Pool in utter failure. No joke. I can’t even begin to count how many times in the past year, as yarn pooling began to trend, that I have been making feeble tries to make a go of it. After a few failed attempts, I would give up. Many people here on YARNutopia would ask for my help or write to see a demonstration, and I had to honestly admit defeat. Yarn pooling was something I wrestled with and lost. I started to reconcile it was NOT for me.
A few weeks ago, I was invited to participate in a Yarn Pooling Blog Tour hosted by Marly Bird. She has a great book Yarn Pooling Made Easy. I was provided a copy of the book and asked to give one of the projects a try by combining her detailed instructions with her comprehensive video tutorials. This was my chance! My last-ditch effort to make it through and understand this incredible technique. So, I agreed. I WAS going to overcome this challenge! I was bound and determined THIS time I was going to succeed.
The instructions say to use a variegated yarn with a repeated color way. I had my yarn Red Heart Super Saver in Platoon that I felt would be perfect for this. I decided to not over shoot my first attempt by getting over zealous taking on a huge pattern, so I decided on a scarf as my first project to try yarn pooling. I was ready. I was excited. I was optimistic. I was geared up to tackle something that previously tried to defeat me. This time I was NOT to be defeated!!!
However, things did not go as smooth as I had hoped in the beginning. Have you ever tried to do something and no matter how hard you try, something just doesn’t click? I lacked the coordination to understand some key elements and my first several attempts I had to frog my work. I was not going to let Marly Bird down! So, I kept going. I watched her video tutorials and read the instructions in her book very carefully. I started over and over. I put my headphones on, tuned out everything, and listened to each word of her videos. By the time I reached the end of her segment, I was sooooo inspired!! Marly, you inspire me so much!
I began to work my yarn into to the right calculations and GUESS WHAT, it works!!!! It worked out for me!!! I started to see how the pooling effect created the argyle pattern, and boy, I did an epic happy dance all over my house!!!! How thrilling!! This has been the ONLY helpful guide for me to be able to succeed on something that I was about to give up on. I am typically NOT a quitter and thank goodness, because if I was, I would not have found my way to this great book and Marly’s fantastic videos and I would not be Yarn Pooling today! I am so thankful to have stuck it out and succeeded. Marly, thank you!

A late season snowstorm swept in overnight just in time for the release of my Something Blue Cowl. Wear it with attitude and rock that winter look no matter what time of the season! You can make this piece as a scarf with fringe or make it a mobius cowl by twisting the scarf before sewing it closed. Have fun with this design and stay warm out there!

This Steampunk and Stars Cowl has me feeling fierce! This design includes elements like buttons, cogs, chains, and leather to add to the steampunk fashion feel. I was working to achieve a more edgy design by adding asymmetry.
Change this look up by eliminating or replacing the buttons with other embellishments. Add fringe to both sides. Change the yarn color for an entirely different look. Bright colors would add whimsy whereas dark colors would add edge.

-You can adjust the size for measurements but this one measures 12 inches wide which is 30 centimeters and it is over 6 feet long but you can make it shorter if you’d like.
–Since this is a repeat pattern, and it is in the multiple of 4, you can pretty much create this same design with any yarn. I give tips and tricks on how to do so in the intro of both video tutorials. You can use any worsted weight or double knitting yarn. Feel free to use any type of fiber you’d like.

These Winter Snowman Coasters will be perfect on any table this holiday! Make this fun holiday accent for your guests. It’s perfect for serving your beverages! Try a new technique of working with cork board to crochet with!
Some fun suggestions by changing up the color are that you can change the look of the coasters. Going around the coaster with black yarn and putting a beak instead of a carrot nose, you can transform these snowmen into penguins or other varieties of characters. Want to change the shape? Use square coasters or cut squares out of your cork board and work around the squares using the same technique. Also, you can use the same technique on a larger cork and create a single hot pad for your Christmas Tabletop. Have fun with these ideas! They don’t have to be holiday related. You can make a few changes and have them all year round.

Punch holes around cork coaster measuring 1 inch in between them and a half inch into the coaster (see video tutorial for visual instructions.)

My design was made with three colors of soft yarn giving it all the comfort and warmth needed when we can’t get away from the cold weather.

In an earlier post, I had mentioned that Nate bought me yarn this past Christmas. Some may think, “Well that is a no brainer, she crochets, she loves yarn. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!” Right? But to that, I say this: I thought about this man going through yarn types and brands trying to choose the right ones, the best fibers, deciding on variety without a clue as to what he’s doing, except he was doing it because he loves me. It made my heart skip. The picture of this in my mind was incredibly endearing.
Today’s leaf and floral neck lariat necklace is inspired by some of those skeins of yarn and the love behind them. Leaves are symbolic of life and the red flower symbolizes love. So, it is appropriate that it all comes together in this great creative piece. He truly has woven his way right into my heart giving it life. What better way to show that love than through my work?!
You can make this as a belt, as a bunting, garland. You can customize this piece to your own desire. Make it longer, make it shorter, make it in different colors! The possibilities are endless!

Fashion has always been a passion for me. I am often inspired by different designs, colors, and styles. I’m always trying to think outside the box and create pieces that are fashion-forward. This particular piece is no exception. The minute I saw the yarn, I knew it had to be made into something very special. Somehow this particular piece came to mind. This didn’t just come from nowhere, there’s a special story behind the making of this cowl….
Over the holiday season, Nate asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I jokingly said, “If you buy me yarn, I will love you forever!” (my love isn’t contingent on whether he buys me yarn, don’t worry. Haha!!)
On Christmas day, he gave me a gift bag with wrapped gifts inside. I was giddy with excitement because I picked up one package thinking it was yarn, and I squealed out, “I love you forever!!” I tore at it to find a stuffed penguin that looked like a skein of yarn, and the joke was on me! My face must have registered every emotion when I was caught in his prank!
Doesn’t it look like it could be a skein of yarn??
But, further into my package were skeins and skeins of yarn! He gave me two engraved crochet hooks as well. All these gifts had to be put to some amazing use. This gift inspired me so much! I made this crochet turtleneck fringe cowl to add to my Downtown Collection fashion line.
For anyone looking for something different during the cold weather, this design is for you. A special note to my sweetheart, Nate: I will love you no matter what, but your support and sharing anything yarn related with me is a one way ticket to having my heart forever! Cable Crochet is always a big favorite for a variety of projects! In this cowl neck, I have done a vertical Cable stitch to complete this amazing infinity scarf. It doesn’t have to stop there! Once you have mastered this stitch, this would be a great pattern for an afghan, a baby blanket, or other projects where cable stitch would compliment your piece!

Materials: -Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Dark Orchid (2 skeins–364 yards each skein)
-Size J-6.00mm Crochet Hook
-Yarn Needle

This time of year I am often asked to design gift ideas for men. I literally saw a photo of the perfect scarf and thought “I could make one like that!!” A couple nights ago, I actually dreamt about how I was going to create such a handsome piece.
Once I started, it was quite a challenge to put the design in my head into an intricate yet easy to learn cable type stitching and still keep a masculine feel. This is my finished product.
“The Gentleman’s Scarf” will be perfect for the man in your life. Mine was willing to model for me to demonstrate how handsome he looks wearing one. Just in time for the holiday season!
The bulk of the stitches make it very cuddly and soft. (awww!)

As winter approaches, the need to bundle up becomes more prevalent. From top to bottom, we pile on layers to keep ourselves from the bitter cold. Although I made this particular hood for my costume this Halloween, once made, I realized how warm this actually is (since I wore it all night long).
Many of my blog followers on Facebook and Instagram inquired about me making a video tutorial for this project. It occurred to me that this would be perfect for the season as winter apparel. It offers a very stylish option, and it is very different than your average winter hat or scarf.
This is a cat hoodie of course, however, it is also very versatile. You do not have to put on the ears, or you can replace the ears with bear ears or fox ears. Custom make this to any animal of your choice! The creativity that is in this project knows no bounds! You could take it to a different level and line the face with fur around row 1. I’m sure you will find this to be a very fun and easy project. These make great gifts, and they are incredibly warm to wear!
When I was looking up inspiration online for the Cheshire Cat, I came across this photo. I could NOT find a pattern, but knew I could make one myself. This photo served as the inspiration to the hood I made. The original designer for this hood shown below is Archaical. You can find her work here on here website or here on her Facebook.

Lace in the back of hoodie: With P Hook
With Lake Tahoe Blue, Ch 200, fasten off. Use the long chain to lace up the back of the hood. (see video for visual instructions)
Front Tassels:
Take 3 strands of each color (total of 12 strands) that measure 48 inches. Attach to each end of the front of the hood and create braids. (See video for visual instructions)
Ears: Make 2 (Optional) With L hook Outer Ear:
With Lake Tahoe Blue, Ch 7 Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (6) Row 2: Sc across (6) Row 3: sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (4) Row 4: sc across (4) Row 5: sc2tog twice, ch 1, turn (2) Row 6: sc2tog, ch 1, turn (1)
Continue to single crochet all the way around the triangle, fasten off with long tail for sewing.
Inner ear:
With Dallas Gray, Ch 5 Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (4) Row 2: sc across, ch 1, turn (4) Row 3: sc2tog twice, ch 1, turn (2) Row 4: sc across, ch 1, turn (2) Row 5: Sc2tog, ch 1, turn (1)
Continue to single crochet all the way around triangle, fasten off with long tail for sewing
Attach gray part of ear to blue part of ear, sew ears to hoodie between rows 2 & 3, weave in all ends.
Tail:
Change color every 10 Rounds. Work In continuous Rounds, moving stitch marker up each round. Add stuffing as you go, I found it easier to stuff after every 10 rounds.
Ch 2, Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6) Rnd 2: Sc in each st around. (6) Rnd 3: 2 sc in each st around. (12) Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. (12) Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] 6 times. (18) Rnd 6: Sc in each st around. (18) Rnd 7: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] 6 times. (24) Rnd 8-60 (or however long you want to make it): Sc in each st around, change color after rounds 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50.
Apply fur at the tip of the tail by sewing it on.
Sew end closed and weave elastic through and wear around your waist, or sew the end closed and pin it to your pants!
Weave in all ends

I know it’s early in the season, but my rule of thumb is that there’s always a good time to sink your crochet hook in a great fashion item. Infinity scarves are quite the statement accessory! This one is no exception! It’s my Passion for Fashion Infinity Scarf. This very easy and fantastic scarf makes a bold statement with the massive wooden buttons on it. The buttons I got on Etsy at Wood Be Fancy. You should check out all the cool buttons that are available on that shop!
This is perfect for the approaching cold weather in the winter. Anyone is sure to stand out in this piece. This can be worn with a heavy sweater, a cardigan, over a sweatshirt, or with a great winter jacket!
From the moment I tried it on to showcase it in this blog, I fell in love with its versatility. I have to keep one for myself. I have a feeling that a lot of you will think the same way when you’re all finished making one!! After I made the charcoal one in this tutorial, I started picturing it in bold colors such as a deep wine red color or even a dark turquoise or a rich blue tone. This is a fun project geared toward beginners, but anyone can enjoy this project!
