Crochet Tutorial: Mermaid Tail Afghan Pattern—3 Sizes (Small: Child, Medium: Teen, Large: Adult)

MermaidAfghan
Several weeks ago, a few of my friends contacted me showing me a photo they found online of a mermaid blanket. Not all mermaid blankets were exactly the same, so I did my own research and used variations of different stitches and patterns I found on the internet, I created my own mermaid afghan. Since I borrowed stitches from several different patterns (including this pattern by Mad Hooker), I combined them to make my own in this exclusive FREE pattern that I have written. Below you will find the instructions to make 3 different sizes (Small, Medium, Large). You can use any combination of colors to create the scale look. This is an easy to follow pattern, and I highly recommend watching the video tutorial to follow along if you get stuck. Enjoy and Happy Hookin’! ~Nadia

Size Small will fit a child that is 4 feet-5 feet tall.
The Medium will fit anybody that is 5 feet to 6 feet tall (this is the one I filmed), and
the Large fits anybody over 6 feet tall.
The Width for each is the same so it can fit larger or skinnier people. It measures approximately 50 inches wide.

Materials:
Although I used Red Heart Yarns in this project, here is a great substitution of yarn that works great as well. Brava yarn by WeCrochet/Knit Picks
-Red Heart Super Saver Medium (worsted) weight yarn: The skeins of yarn are Approx.364 yds (333 m) per skein. Please keep that in mind when you are purchasing yarn.
Size Small:  2 skeins Macaw, 1 skein Jade, and 1 skein Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
Size Medium: 3 skeins Macaw, 2 skeins Jade, and 2 skeins Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
Size Large: 4 skeins Macaw, 3 skeins Jade, and 3 skeins Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
If you cannot get these exact brands of yarn, go to Yarnsub.com to find an equivalent type of yarn.

Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
DC: double crochet
Sc: single crochet
Sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together

Notes:

-When you finish this project, you may sew up the “open” side to make this a full cocoon style. You may also crochet a single crochet around the entire edge to “cover up” the edges where you sew in your ends.
-To sew in your ends, just take a yarn needle and hide all the ends back into your work. (I do not show how to do this in this video, but if you watch any of my other video tutorials, I show how I sew in my ends if you want to do it like me).
-The chain is the same in all sizes, but if you dont want it that wide, chain something that is in groups of 6 +2. So if you chain something that is 114 + 2, you would have 116 chains. I hope that makes sense!
-Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc throughout.
Change color after every row, sew in ends as you go
-sc2tog on “blanket” portion means to go into the middle st of 5dc group, yarn over, go into the middle st of the next 5dc group, yarn over, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
-To make the tail fin bigger: Repeat rows 2 and 3 for however big you want it to be (maybe 60 or 70 stitches), then repeat rows 14 and 15 to decrease for the other half. I hope that makes sense!

I LOVED the pattern and made one for my granddaughter. I used pink sparkle for body and silver sparkle for tail.the i made a starfish and conch shell, added beads and sewed them where the 2 are joined. BEAUTIFUL. Thank you so very much for all your hard work posting and doing video.

Share a picture on the Facebook page Patti! I would love to see!! Glad it worked out!

I have a question, would the scales look more layered if you were to crochet through the back of the stitch rather than through the whole stitch. (not sure if i am asking correctly)

What kind of yarn is your pink sparkle & silver sparkle.
I haven’t knitted or crocheted in decades. I would love to attempt several of these for my granddaughters & the pink sparks would work well for one of them.

What type of yarn is your pink sparkle. I haven’t been able to find anything like a pink sparkle so it would help to know the name & color number of the yarn. Thank you.

I love how made it so clear to follow for crocheting. I’ve been looking everywhere but any chance of one for knitting? I can’t crotchet or one day I can but as of now I only knit. Ty.

Aw Bernadette! I struggle with knitting so I haven’t made a knit one. I am sure there may be one if you search but one day if you work your way into crochet, give it a try! Thanks for the comment!

When you are doing the double crochet chain at the very beginning, it looks like you are doing a treble crochet instead of a double. You pull through one, then two and then two again. Am I wrong? Thank you for clarifying.

    1. Nadia Avatar

It is a foundation double crochet in US terms. Hope that helps.

This tutorial saved my life! I follow directions better when I can actually see what they mean. I made mine using a solid color (teal) and it looks great. It’s a Christmas gift and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It was so helpful.

  7. Jamie Millard Avatar

Do you have a gauge for these? I noticed a few comments about not during people and I think being able to check gauge would help. I crochet much tighter than most people and I’ll probably need to go up a hook size or two.

  8. silverclawmoonmist Avatar

Is it supposed to get wider with every row? Im on row 5 and it is already much wider than when i started.

  9. silverclawmoonmist Avatar

Is it supposed to get wider as you go? Cuz I’m only on row 5 and it’s already significantly wider than row 1. (Sorry, i cant watch the video on my phone, so that’s why I’m asking).

    1. Nadia Avatar

Here is how it should be done.
*skip 2 sts and do a 5dc shell in the next stitch, skip 2 sts and sc in next then repeat from * all the way across. You should end up with 25 shells on each row. I will double check the pattern. The video tutorial shows how it should be done. You can find all that information here: http://yarnutopia.com/2015/04/29/how-to-crochet-video-tutorial-mermaid-tail-afghan-pattern-3-sizes-small-child-medium-teen-large-adult/

I think it’s a good idea to add when you’re making the tail that the chain 2 doesn’t count as a stitch. I kept getting messed up it didn’t look right but I finally figured it out

I’m currently making one with chunky (9) yarn… I only did 72 for my foundation & have 12 full shells across…. Still working on length, but I think (including the decreases) I’ll end up with 50 rows… However, I’m finding its going to take more skiens than I thought, at least 4 of each of the three colors and a 5th for the tail color…. But its so warm & very pretty so far.

Hi Nadia I love love love this video! I hope you are feeling better. This is perfect for me cause i have a very hard time following patterns but with video i can make most all the projects i try. I did make this blanket and it turned out beautifully!! It was however too small so i have to make another one for my daughter that is larger. I have looked and looked and can not find a video on how to do the SHARK blanket that compliments the mermaid one. I want to make it for my son and give these both to my kids for christmas. Any chance you would be willing to make a video like your mermaid one but for a shark??? please please your videos are the best!!

    1. Nadia Avatar

I don’t know if I will be doing any shark blanket tutorial but I know there are some out there if you search on Ravelry.com They are very cool and maybe one day I will add it to my to do list. My list is so long! Thank you also for the well wishes. I am feeling better each day!

This looks like it’s a tube, but I think by the directions that it isn’t. Could it be made into a tube?

    1. Nadia Avatar

You can definitely make it into a tube. I do not have a pattern to make it in continuous rounds but you could sew the back up to enclose it.

Thanks so much for this great tutorial! I’m lazy and don’t want to weave in all those ends, so this first time through the blanket I’m just doing the variegated yarn. But I had a thought — since you’re doing 3 colors and changing each row, couldn’t you just carry the colors up the sides, and then crochet a border over them in the end? It would save a ton of weaving in of ends!!

    1. Nadia Avatar

You could! Yes and sc around! That is a great idea!

Thanks SO much for posting this. My grandma taught be how to crochet when I was little and I forgot how since she always made what I wanted for me! I recently found her crochet hooks and decided to relearn and this was my first major project. It turned out beautifully and I absolutely love it! I can’t even begin to explain mermaids and the meaning they hold for my family. This is going to be the perfect gift for my aunt and cousin! I did have a question though, do you have any thoughts on how to make the fin stiffer? Mine is awfully floppy and Id like it to just lay out. Please let me know if you have any ideas. I thought of stuffing it or running a thin wire along the bottom – but don’t want it to get messed in the wash!

Thank you again! I love my tail!

    1. Nadia Avatar

One way to stiffen the tail you could crochet using two skeins of yarn at the same time to make it a little thicker and that might help to give it the definition you are looking for. Hope this helps! ~Nadia

How can I change the pattern to fit a 2-4 year old. I made one for my step daughter but the smallest size is way to big for my 2 year old niece.

    1. Nadia Avatar

I am unsure how to make this smaller, but if you check out this blog post by Mad Hooker, there are tips on how to make it a different size by using a different amount of chains. Good luck!! https://www.madhooker.com/mermaid-lapghan/

  28. Jean Colucci Avatar

my tail doesn’t seem so wide. I know I crochet more tighter than you by watching the video. I wonder if should be using a bigger hook for the tail? My tail is only like 11 inches wide when complete is that right?

Hi there! I just made one of these mermaid tails and loved how helpful the video was! But are there any tips on how to work this pattern in a continuous round for my next one instead of sewing it all up at the end, and is there an easier way for all the ends?! lol they drove me crazy buy the end of the first one, any tips would be appreciated 🙂

replying a few months later, but if you are using three colors, you don’t have to cut the yarn. You can just carry it up the side to the next row when you need it. This method uses less yarn and NO WEAVING IN of those pesky ends. That is what I am doing on mine. When I get to a color change, I do change it (from color 1 to color 2, but don’t cut color 1). Crochet the next row with color 2. Change colors to color 3, but don’t cut color 2. Crochet the row with color 3. When you get to the end, pick up the loose end of color #1, and drop color # 3. Do this the whole body, and you won’t have any loose ends to sew in. I will then do a single crochet or crab stitch border to cover where I carried the colors.

Hi,could you give me an estimate on how many hours it took to make

I am not very good when it comes to changing colors during crocheting. Would it look ok if I used a varigated yarn instead. I am a novice, but try very hard.

You can definitely keep it all one color. Good luck!! ~Nadia

I’m thinking of trying with varigated yarn too. Hate color chagnes!!!

I am confused. I am making the small pattern. I am watching the video and following along. The video says to do Sc2tog and then the regular pattern for Row 69. I think Row 69 would be Row 53 on the small pattern. However, Row 53 on the written pattern says to do the regular pattern (no decreases). And the written pattern for Row 69 says the same thing. What am I missing??

If you’ve downloaded the pattern (English version), there are two typos in the small and large patterns. For the small, when you go from rows to rounds, it should be beginning of row 50 and not row 66, as for the large pattern, it should be row 74 and not row 66.

Hi Nadia, I’m making mine with a size H hook and I noticed that it doesn’t look that long like yours. Do you know if it will stretch over time? Thanks.

Thank you so much for this video! I haven’t crotcheted since HS and even then I wasn’t much good. I do have a question though. How do you sew in the ends? What exactly does that mean? This is my first time taking on such a large crotchet project. I’m making the blanket as a birthday present for my 5 year old. Figured she could grow into it. haha

I would also like to know what it means to sew in the ends.

    Nadia,
I am wanting to attempt to crochet your Mermaid Tail afghan for my granddaughters. I have not crochet anything since I made a few baby clothes for my first born many years ago.

    Colors.
I was able to find the Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Macaw & Jade locally.

However, I can not find any reference of the Red Heart with Love yarn in the color Periwinkle.

I can order from Joann’s or Amazon the Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Light Periwinkle. That is the only Red Heart yarn I can find with Periwinkle as part of the color name.

Do you have another suggestion of a color that would coordinate with the Macaw & Jade for this Afghan?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

P.S. I would also like to make one for a very girly six year old in pink /lavender tones… with maybe some silver thread in it. Any suggestions?

    Periwinkle – Help!!
I have been unable to find the color Periwinkle in the Red Heart with Love yarn. I can not find it even listed as a color on the Red Heart yarn website.

Does anyone know where I can purchase the color – Periwinkle in the RedHeart with Love yarn?

I found on Amazon the Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Light-Perwinkle

I haven’t knitted or crochet in decades & my skill set for crocheting is limited. I don’t want to just use any yarn as for my first attempt I would like to follow Nadia’s instructions.

    Thank you

Ignore my comment about looking for Periwinkle. For some reason I read Periwinkle instead of Peacock.

Hello Nadia. I was wondering if you had any yarn left over after you completed your project, and if so, approximately how much. Thank you!

I’m going to try crocheting in the back loop for a better “gills” look. Also, I think I’m going to try making it straight until after I’ve done the decreases and then fold both sides to the middle and sew it up. I’m going to sew the fin inside the tail as well. I’m hoping for a good outcome! Thanks for all the time you put into the video.

What do you mean sew the “fin inside the tail”? Isn’t the fin & tail the same thing?

Also, how do you crochet in the back loop for a better gills look? I haven’t started mine yet & I haven’t crocheted in decades so I’m looking for pointers before I start n

Sorry, what I meant was that I’m going to fold the blanket so that its inside out and place the fin inside the two sides and sew it. Then turn it right side out again.

On Nadia’s Etsy page the colors of the Afgan in the photo (Sam photo as in the online pattern) list the colors as Turquoise, Jade & Varigated Blues,
This site lists the colors using Red Heart yarn as Jade, Peacock (a dark blue) & Macaw (varigated blue).
Has anyone tried making this with a Turquise color instead of the Peacock (dark blue)?
Also in both the photos the dark blue looks more like a Royal Blue color & not the Dark Blue color of Peacock. Thoughts?
