I created this Desert Shell Granny Square design to add to our 365 Days of Granny Squares project. It uses variety of crochet stitches to create a look that reminds me of the heat!! I hope you enjoy making your square!
A couple disclaimers before you start: Be sure to check your tension and use the correct size hook for your square. I demonstrate with an H-5.00mm crochet hook in the video tutorial, but you can make yours bigger or smaller by using a bigger or smaller hook. Also, if yours turns out wonky when you are finished, you may need to block this square to make it nice and flat.

-Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in as many colors as you want.
-H-5.00mm Crochet Hook
-You can use a smaller or larger hook to make this square depending on your tension. I wouldn’t use anything larger than an I-5.5mm Crochet Hook though.
-The finished square measures approximately 6 inches.
-This square is worked from the center outward
YO: Yarn Over
Sl st: slip stitch
SC: Single Crochet
HDC: Half-Double Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
FPDC: Front Post Double Crochet
TR: Treble Crochet

Start with Magic Ring or ch 4 and sl st to beginning to form ring.
Rnd 1: ch 3, 2 dc in ring [ch 2, 3dc] 3 times in ring, ch 2, sl st to beginning.
Rnd 2: In any corner, ch 3, [2dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, [ch 1, 3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in each sp, sl st to beginning.
Rnd 3: In any corner, Ch 1 *[SC, EDC, SC] in corner, sc in next 3 sts, EDC in next 3 sts working in sk’d sts from rnd 1, sc in next 3 sts working in round 2, , repeat from * around, sl st to beginning sc.
Rnd 4: In any EDC corner, ch 3 (counts as DC), 4 DC in same st, *sk 1 st, sc in next, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in middle EDC of 3EDC grouping, sk 2 sts, sc in next, sk 1 st, 5 DC in corner EDC, repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning ch 3. (See video tutorial if this round gets confusing)
Rnd 5: in any side shell, sc in middle st and sc in next st, * ch 10, sk next shell, sc in middle 3 sts of next shell, repeat from * around ending with sc in last st, sl st to beginning sc.
Rnd 6: In ch 10 sp: Ch 3, 5 dc in same sp, *[6dc, ch 2, 6 dc] in next sp, 6 dc in next sp, repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning ch up 3.
Rnd 7: SC in each st around, putting [sc, ch 2, sc] in corners.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
