This is my first ever Crochet Along that I will be hosting with another blogger and good friend of mine, Nicki from Nicki’s Homemade Crafts! We are keeping it a complete secret until the end, so we are calling this a Mystery Crochet Along to make things interesting. This entire CAL is free and will be broken up into 5 PARTS throughout 2 weeks with a special *GIVEAWAY* at the end.

How this will work:

You can follow both Nicki and myself on social media or sign up for our newsletters and of course join our Facebook groups. (All linked above) The Mystery CAL will be in 5 separate parts: 2 parts for me, 2 for Nicki, and 1 part that we both reveal at the end. The last part of the Mystery CAL will be similar, but not the same. We both start out with the same crochet pattern, but we will be finishing it differently. That way, we make it more fun and it provides you with *options* on how to finish it yourself. Who doesn’t love options?! Amirite?!

All the parts for this Mystery Crochet Along will have written instructions as well as an accompanying video tutorial to guide you through every step of the way. Here’s an example

For Part 1, you will go to Nicki’s website to see the written pattern and video tutorial. (I’ll share her link here so you don’t get lost).

Then, for Part 2, you will come here to my website to get the written pattern and video tutorial.

For part 3, you will go back to Nicki’s website for the instructions,

And for part 5, the final one, you will get to choose between Nicki’s final option or mine-You will be able to view both and make your own choice based on what you like!

Here are all the materials you will need for this Mystery Crochet Along:

4 different colors of worsted weight (Size 4 medium) yarn

I used WeCrochet’s Brava yarn with these colors (go to Nicki’s Page to see which colors and amounts of yarn she is using in her project)

-1 skein of Caution for Part 1
-1 skein of Marina for part 2
-2 Skeins of Asphalt Heather for Part 3
-2 skeins of Fairytale for Part 4 and 5
-4.0mm hook (Get the crochet hook I used here)
–Scissors
–Measuring Tape
–Tapestry Needle

Special Notes:

There are a few materials I can’t reveal just yet, as that would reveal the mystery right away

These materials are not essential at the beginning of the pattern

I will reveal them in part 5

To follow this M-CAL, you will need general and beginner-friendly knowledge of basic crochet stitches. Video tutorials will be provided for every part

GAUGE is NOT important, BUT measurements will be! PLEASE MEASURE!

The Mystery Crochet Along will be in 5 separate parts. You will likely not know *what* it will be until you see Part 5 of the CAL. We want to make sure you all have your materials you will need for the Mystery Crochet Along, we will give you all a week to collect your materials.

Make 6 Triangles

Use a color that you have ONE skein of

I picked Marina

Each triangle has the dimensions 7.5 (long side) x 5.5 (both short sides) (if stretched it could also be 6 inches). Try to make sure your measurements match that.

Special stitches:
Ch(s): chain(s)
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SK: Skip
SC: Single Crochet

Triangle:
Make 6 Total Triangles in the same color (I used Marina for all 6 of my Triangles for Part 2)

Start with a Magic Ring (or Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring)

Row 1: Ch 1, [SC, Ch 2, SC] into Ring, Ch 1, Turn.

Row 2: SC in first SC, Ch 1, [SC, Ch 2, SC] in ch 2 sp, Ch 1, SC in last st, Ch 1, Turn.

Row 3: SC in first st, Ch 1, SC in next Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, [SC, Ch 2, SC] in Ch 2 sp, Ch 1, SC in next Ch 1 sp, Ch 1, SC in last st, Ch 1, Turn.

Row 4: SC in first st, *Ch 1, SC in next ch sp, repeat from * until Ch 2 sp, [SC, Ch 2, SC] in ch 2 sp, **Ch 1, SC in next ch 1 sp, repeat from ** until last st, Ch 1, and SC in last St. Ch 1, Turn.

Rows 5-14: Repeat Row 4
when your triangle is big enough, SC along the LONG side of your triangle 24 sts evenly. Fasten off and weave in all your ends.

Make 6 squares

Crochet with a color you only have TWO of (not the same as the rectangle).

I used the color Fairy Tale (used a little more than 1 skein). The squares need to measure 5.5 x 5.5 inches at the end.

Special stitches:
Ch(s): chain(s)
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SK: Skip
WS: Wrong Side (Back of square)
RS: Right Side (Front of Square
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
FPDC: Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC: Back Post Double Crochet

Pattern:

Magic ring or Ch 4, Sl st to first ch to form a ring.

(RS) Rnd 1: Ch up 3 (Counts as DC), 2 DC into ring, [Ch 2, 3 DC into ring] 3 times, Ch 2, sl st to beg ch up 3 st, ch 1, do NOT turn.

(RS) Rnd 2: FPDC on first st, *DC in next, FPDC on next, [2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] in corner, FPDC on next st, repeat from * around, ending with corner sts, Sl st to first FPDC, ch 1, TURN.

(WS) Rnd 3: DC in same st you sl st’d into, [BPDC on next st, DC in next st] until corner, *[2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] in corner, [DC in next st, BPDC on next st] until corner, repeat from * around, ending with BPDC on last st, Sl st to 1st DC. Ch 1. Do NOT turn.

(WS) Rnd 4: BPDC on same st you sl st’d to, [DC on next st, BPDC on next st] until corner, *[2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] in corner, [BPDC on next st, DC on next st] until next corner, repeat from * around, ending with DC in last st, Sl st to 1st BPDC, ch 1, turn. (if your square is large enough at this point, just skip round 5 and work a single crochet round like round 6 – just be sure to SC around while looking at the RS of your work)

(RS) Rnd 5: DC in same st you sl st’d into, [FPDC on next st, DC in next st] until corner, *[2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC] in corner, [DC in next st, FPDC on next st] until next corner, Repeat from * around, ending with FPDC on last st, sl st to 1st DC, ch 1, do NOT turn.

(RS) Rnd 6: SC around entire square putting [2 sc, Ch 2, 2 SC] in each corner, sl st to first SC. Fasten off. Weave in all your ends.

Assembly

Here’s the Video tutorial:

Straps: **MAKE 2**

Start with a long strand of yarn for sewing before making your slip knot.

Round 1: Ch 12 (or any number that is double the width of the strap you would like), SC in the first ch to form a ring and continue to SC around the whole chain (12)

Work in continuous rounds

Rnds 2-50: SC in each st around
(you can make your strap shorter by doing less rounds or longer by doing more rounds depending on your liking)

Attaching the triangles, squares, and rectangle:
Using your rectangle as the base, you will sew that on last.
Line up your squares as diamonds and place the triangles with their short sides touching the squares and their long sides facing out. (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Using the Single Crochet method, Single crochet your pieces together in a zig-zag direction. When all your squares and triangles are attached, line up the rectangle to the bottom and single crochet around the whole piece attaching it to your triangles.

Top Brim: Single crochet around the whole top of the bag, Continue to SC around the top of the bag until your height is what you want the bag to be. I did 10 rounds around the top of the bag.

Sew your straps on the inside of the bag for a more sturdy hold.

Add a button and a loop to clasp onto the button (optional)

Before you know it, sweater weather will be upon us here in the northern hemisphere. I know it is hard to think about it on a balmy summer day, but as we have learned in previous years, time flies. Why not get ahead of the season with some awesome baby wear? I made this Offbeat Baby Cardigan for Nasir, and it turned out so sweet!! Even though it is way too hot to be dressed in this sweater today, my sweet boy still modeled it like a champ!

Using an eclectic mix of thick and thin striping, this mismatched pattern makes a striking cardigan that is a compliment to any baby wardrobe. I made this one using Brava Yarn by WeCrochet (KnitPicks) in the colors Asphalt Heather and Denim. This combo works so nicely for Nas, but it can be done in any combination of color. And don’t worry if the stripes throw you off, you can follow along without changing colors and make this solid or use only the elements you like to make it your own. Both are the same, but the color changes are different.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, SC in each st and each ch of a button hole around, Sl st to first SC. Fasten off, Weave in ends.

Collar:

Attach Gray Yarn to one side of neck

Row 1: Ch 1, SC in 3 sts, HDC in 5 sts, DC in 27 sts (across back), HDC in 5 sts, SC in 3 sts, Sl st to next st, Ch 1 turn

Row 2-4: Repeat Row 1
Sl st in next st, Fasten off, Weave in ends.

-The Length from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the shirt is 23 inches (but you can make yours longer if you want it to be a tunic style)
-The bust measurement is 40 inches around
-This project goes off measurements, and the front and back panel need to be half of your bust measurement wide. (mine is 20 inches wide because my bust is 40 inches around)
-This piece is made crocheting the front panel, then the back panel, then sewing them together, then adding the sleeves last.
-This took about 3 days for me to create.

Front Panel and Back Panel:

The front and back panel are made exactly the same, just make 2 then sew them together (Watch the video tutorial to learn how to do this)

With Main Color
Ch 75 (or any multiple of 5 that is HALF of your Bust Measurement)

Row 1: Shell in the 6th Ch from hook, *Sk 2 Chs, DC in next Ch, Sk 2 Chs, Shell in next Ch, repeat from * across ending with DC in last ch, Turn. (You want to end this row with one double crochet, if you have extra chains, you can ignore those and sew them in later when we sew our panels together.)

Before going onto Row 2, Mark 2 lines where you want your ribbing lines to be, these should be evenly spaced. See video tutorial at 12 minutes, 20 seconds to see this demonstration. My written instructions are for the pattern I’m demonstrating, but you can understand the idea and do it according to your measurement and stitch count.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as DC), *Shell in ch 1 sp of next Shell, Sk 2 sts, DC in next st, repeat from * until you get to your marked st, FPDC on marked st, **Shell in ch 1 sp of next shell, Sk 2 sts, DC in next st, repeat from ** until you get to the next marked st, FPDC on marked st, ***Shell in Ch 1 sp of next shell, Sk 2 sts, DC in next st, Repeat from *** until the end, ending with DC in last st, Turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as DC), *Shell in ch 1 sp of next Shell, Sk 2 sts, DC in next st, repeat from * until you get to your marked st, BPDC on marked st, **Shell in ch 1 sp of next shell, Sk 2 sts, DC in next st, repeat from ** until you get to the next marked st, BPDC on marked st, ***Shell in Ch 1 sp of next shell, Sk 2 sts, DC in next st, Repeat from *** until the end, ending with DC in last st, Turn.

Rows 4-40: repeat Rows 2 and 3 (you can continue this method until you have the shirt as long as you want it to be. I ended on Row 40)
Fasten off, weave in ends.

After both front and back panel are made, Sew them together up the sides (leaving room for arm holes) and across the shoulders (leaving room for a head hole) Be sure that your foundation row is the top of the shirt and your last row is the bottom of the shirt. You want the wavy look to be at the bottom of the shirt, and the shells to be upside down.

Sleeves:

Do this method for BOTH arm holes to make BOTH sleeves.

Round 1: Attach main color (Clarity) to any section of the arm hole (I started at the armpit), Ch 3 (does not count as a stitch), Evenly space 70 TR around entire Arm Hole. (see video tutorial for visual instructions) I worked around the ch 3 sps from each row of the body part of the shirt. Sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 2: With new color (Sunshine), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 3: With new color (Sky), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 4: With main color, (Clarity), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 5: With new color (Sunshine), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 6: With new color (Sky), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 7: With main color (Clarity), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 8: With new color (Sunshine), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 9: With new color (Sky), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 18: Continue with same color Sunshine, Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 19: With new color (Sky), Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, DO NOT fasten off, Turn.

Rnd 20: Continue with same color Sky, Ch 3, TR in each st around, sl st to first TR, Fasten off.
Be sure you are looking at the OUTSIDE of your sleeve and then attach your main color to any stitch and continue onto Round 21.
Making the cuff
Rnd 21: Ch 1, SC2TOG in each st around. (you will have half the number of sts around plus one extra SC, I had 36 sts around), Sl st to first SC, Ch 1, DO NOT TURN.

Rnd 22: Working in BLO, SC2TOG in each st around, sl st to first SC, Ch 1, Do not turn. (18 sts)

Rnds 23-32: working in BLO, SC in each st around, Sl st to first SC, Ch 1, do not turn.

Fasten off main color, attach Sunshine in any st around. Work in BOTH LOOPS

Dear Creators,

As a BIPOC creator and maker, it is a powerful time in history to watch as so many companies and corporations take a stand in support of Black lives and stand against racial injustice. That is how it should be. I stand on my platforms to support Black Lives and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) creators because they have long been overlooked. There is SO much talent in this community and BIPOC need more recognition and elevation. Our world is full of color and diversity. More companies have to stand for their diverse audience and understand their needs. Not turn a blind eye. Makers of color deserve recognition. Many of the fiber companies have taken a stand. Yet, some have not.

Many of you know that I was a Joy Creator for Red Heart Yarns which was bought out by Yarnspirations/Spinrite. I continued to use and promote their product in nearly all my video tutorials and projects. I stood behind their product. I was not a paid spokesperson nor was I paid money for my videos. I was given yarn support and like all makers, we do generate a small stipend from using affiliate links that generate a sale from time to time. I was always transparent about that. It is one way we can provide free patterns while still generating a small avenue of income to bring you our patterns.

In the face of recent events, the company I had been representing as a stitch ambassador and Joy Creator has not made a public statement nor taken a stance in support of the Black Lives Matter movement or to denounce the killings of black men and women. There has been no statement against racial injustice that we all witness all too often. There has not been a show of support for the community of makers of color in this industry. With that weighing heavily on my mind and my heart, I reached out in a private email and asked them to remove me from their platform and asked them to stop using my likeness on their website.

I decided it was time to move on to a company I felt better represented people of color and community as a whole. I sent Yarnspirations an email with a knot in my gut and a prayer in my heart. I waited. I did not receive a reply. I kept waiting, refreshing my inbox, checking over and over. Nearly a week had passed when none of my requests were acknowledged nor was there anyone from the company who reached out to me at any time to say anything encouraging – not even a one liner. Their silence spoke volumes. It was apparent to me that my voice was not worthy of a reply.

I decided to raise my voice then, in a more public fashion today. It was only in that route did a round-about apology come forth, yet no stand has been taken publicly on any forum. After taking things to the next level in a series of group emails and on a private blogger group did I receive this apology.

It should not be the job of the BIPOC community or BIPOC ambassadors/makers to handhold companies and tell them how to represent their community of color/diversity OR to tell the company to take a stand. The company should already know that the time has come to stand up to racial injustice and discrimination and speak for their customers and creators of color. We need to be seen. People of color have done enough for them by working for free. The company should have been doing this work LONG before now. They should have come with a BOLD and POWERFUL statement in the beginning that made everyone, ESPECIALLY Black makers and creators and creators of color feel elevated and supported.

We should not have to plea with anyone to make a stand. A statement for BIPOC creators and customers should have been the FIRST step of action and then further action could be taken going forward. That is Anti-Racism in action. A company that stands with their creative artists of color and with the nation to say their community of BIPOC matter. That would have gone so far in quelling the fears and anxieties that many of us feel. Those of us that are here as representatives of color, NEED to HEAR that companies like Yarnspirations/Spinrite stand with Black lives and other people of color as a community.

I have decided to use my voice on my platform because, like me, it is compiled of a large percentage of people of color across the entire globe. Many use their product. I used Red Heart Yarns/Yarnspirations products. I shout it out on every video tutorial on every crochet project. Yet they stay silent on my behalf and on behalf of millions of voices. That is unacceptable. The fact that there was no reply and my request for communication about this matter was ignored in my personal email was an eye-opening revelation.

My blog and YouTube channel reach over 150 countries and my nearly half-million followers on all platforms make up only 18% of my actual viewers. I use it to speak my truth as a creator of color, as a woman, and as a PROUD young mother of a child of color – and if that truth and Yarnspirations’ stand do not align, then it is imperative for me to move on and to let others know my intentions and why. This wasn’t a hard decision, just painful to recognize that this company has taken a no stand approach and continues to take no stand other than an obscure Equal Opportunity statement.

Silence is complicit and silence is ALWAYS the voice of the oppressor. ALWAYS.

I am moving on and divorcing myself from this company that has not seen the importance of lending their voice to Black lives or makers of color, nor the enormity of what that could mean financially from me or others, walking away. If a company wants to be anti-racist then TRULY be anti-racist. There is no tiptoeing around and waiting for the “right time.” The time was long before today.

For those of you trying to call me out or say this is political-understand this – this is about human rights and human rights are NOT political. Let’s get that straight. Or those who are asking now that I posted this where am I? I am right here. Same place I am everyday – working to bring you more of this craft because that is what I do and love and I am also taking care of Nasir. Just because I am not commenting back to every comment, that doesn’t mean I have gone into hiding. This is my platform, and I do have the right to stand where I stand just as every person on this feed has the right to say and feel the way they do. I have no objections to any of that. This is about being heard in a place that has not lent more voices to this important racial matter and over the injustices that continue to be ignored or passified in this industry.

It seems like some are ok with this being ignored, that it will be swept under the rug and forgotten and everything will go back to being “comfortable” again. Do you know who stands behind the camera in every video tutorial I post? It’s my dad. Even if you don’t know him or see his face on here or he is not as vocal on this platform, he is still a HUGE part of YARNutopia. He is a HUGE part of ME! I stand for Black makers and makers of color in this industry, and I stand for my father and many people who are unseen but still have a voice that is not being heard-Don’t you get it?? My dad always says to me, “Anything worth fighting for is not going to be comfortable or easy, Nadia.” This, right here, is not comfortable, but it is NECESSARY! It is only when we feel uncomfortable that big changes can come and my hope and prayer is that change truly does come. He also tells me that sometimes you have to lose to win. Not win in monetary ways or in fame, but win in a way that you can sleep at night and wake up the next day and look at yourself in the mirror. For anyone who truly knows me, knows where I stand when it comes to racial injustice and how I feel about the Black Lives Matter movement. They know this was the right thing for ME to do. You don’t have to agree and despite all the negative things some may say, I do respect and see everyone’s comments and I am not afraid or hiding from any of it nor does it change the way I feel. Assembly step: Fold piece in half so it looks like a delicious taco, Sew up each side to leave an opening at the top for a zipper. With sewing thread, sew on a zipper (I hand sewed mine, but you can use a sewing machine if you have one), Tip: Sew your zipper on while your bag is inside out.
Add a tassel and a strap. See instructions below for a strap.

Strap:

Each month, I host a crochet related event in my group YARNutopia World. Over this past weekend, I hosted The Good Intentions Event where everyone virtually attended to use a special yarn they have kept for that “someday” project.

Compare & Contrast: Red Heart Yarns Sweet Home vs. Bernat Blanket Yarn

As I sit through these weeks of Safer At Home, I decided to sort through some of the yarn I have in my stash. I came across several types of yarn with similar qualities and decided to do a contrast and comparison blog. Below are my observations between Red Heart Yarns Sweet Home and Bernat Blanket Yarn. Please refer to the photos for visual observations throughout.

First let me break down the specifics between the two fibers

Sweet Home

As you can see in these details, the two are identical in content, similar in ball size, same care instruction, and price. Not much to break down since these particulars are so alike.

I decided to work up an identical short granny square pattern with each and compare and contrast working with each of these skeins.

I started with Sweet Home. It seems a tad lighter and more flimsy in my opinion. It makes a slightly smaller square using the same hook and pattern. There is more flow and movement in the Sweet Home because of that light and flimsy feel.

The density of Bernat Blanket Yarn seems thicker than the Sweet Home yarn and therefore this gives this fiber a somewhat firmer feel. There is less movement in the piece because of the density and firmness.

After washing:

After washing, there was no shrinking in either of the yarns and both kept their shape. The yarn is extremely soft before washing, but after washing, I personally feel like they are fluffier and softer than before! The Bernat Blanket Yarn has become more flexible and free-flowing losing some of the firmness evident pre-wash. It’s like snuggling a light cloud. I can’t think of better words than soft, light, and fluffy.

Last thoughts:

While comparing these two fibers, I consistently felt they rival one another quite closely. The main difference was felt in the work up of these two fibers with Sweet Home more free-flow whereas the Bernat has more firmness. However, upon washing the consistency is nearly identical in both. I feel these two could work together and be very compatible with no blatant difference. One of the best discoveries of finding two compatible fibers is that it increases your color choices and options when creating with either of these skeins.

While working with these, I discovered a love for both and look forward to integrating them into a project in the near future. There is so much to love about a fiber that feels like these two do!

A very close friend of mine recently had a baby. Prior to the birth, I started this Ombre Striped Baby Blanket, and I finished it in time to leave it on her doorstep as they welcomed this little princess to the world. 😍 The simplicity of the stitch coupled with the surface crochet, make this blanket a fast favorite heirloom for any nursery. –Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (I used Aran -With Love, Pale Plum, Orchid, Dark Orchid, Amethyst) You could use Medium Purple too, and I also used Super Saver Ombre in Purple.

With Aran (main color)
Ch 124 or any even number that you want the width of your blanket to be.

Row 1: SC in 4th Ch from hook, *Ch 1, Sk 1 ch, SC in next Ch, repeat from * across, ending with SC in last ch. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 2, SC in first Ch 1 sp, *Ch 1, SC in next Ch 1 sp, repeat from * across, ending with SC in last ch sp (see video tutorial for visual instructions), Turn.

Rows 3-109: Repeat Row 2

If you want it bigger or smaller, just do an odd number of rows before fastening off.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Surface crochet stripes on every other row, weave in ends as you go. (See video tutorial after 10 minutes into the video and it will show you how to do the surface crochet)

Border:

Attach yarn to a corner of the blanket. (If you are following along with the video tutorial, the border starts at minute 19)
Round 1 of border: Ch 1, SC in same corner, SC in each st and each ch across to next corner, 3 SC in corner, Work down the side working SC in each row down the side and then put 3 SC in the next corner. Do this concept all around, then Sl st to first St.

Round 2 of border: Start in a MIDDLE SC of a corner, Ch 4 (counts as DC, Ch 1 sp), DC in same st, Ch 2, DC in same corner st, Ch 1, DC in same st, *Sk 3 sts, [2DC, Ch 1, 2 DC] in next st, repeat from * until middle SC of corner, in middle Sc of corner, put [DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 2, DC, Ch 1, DC], then repeat from * again, all around. Hand Sanitizer Cozy:

Work in continuous Rounds

Ch 6 or any amount that will fit across the bottom of your hand sanitizer base (see video tutorial for visual instructions)

Rnd 1: SC in 2nd Ch from hook and across, put 3 SC in last Ch, continue working on opposite side of foundation ch, SC across, put 2 SC in last st.

Rnd 2: SC in next st, *Ch 3, Sk 1 st, SC in next st, repeat from * around ending with Ch 3, skipping the last stitch, SC in first st of previous round. (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Rnd 3: *Ch 3, SC in next Ch 3 sp, repeat from * around

Rnd 4-? You can repeat Round 3 to get to the height of your hand sanitizer bottle, once you are at the neck of your container, go onto the next round.
Insert your bottle of hand sanitizer before you close up the top.

Last round: Ch 1, SC in next Ch 3 sp, Repeat from * around.

If you need to do one more round, just SC in each ch 1 sp to close up the top.

I could not help myself and had to jump on the Big Cat train. You never know when you will get inspired and what will lend itself to that inspo. A recent streaming docu-drama became the precipice to making my Big Cat Tiger Hat, and who better to demonstrate how adorable this hat is than Nasir?

Using the selections of yarn in my present stash (due to quarantine, I am limited to finding projects to which lend themselves to what I have because making a yarn order is off the table for the time being) I decided to construct a tiger hat using a selection of Red Heart Yarns in Hygge, With Love, Soft, and Super Saver.

Here is the step by step pattern that will walk you through this project so you can make your very own.

Due to the constraints that our present situation has put on us. I am continuing the practice of SAFER AT HOME. Therefore, am unable to film a detailed video tutorial right now. Once the mandate is lifted and I am able to travel, my dad and I hope to film this project. A detailed piece like this deserves a top notch video tutorial for everyone. In the meantime, I hope this will suffice.

Scary and Uncertain Times

Like most of America, and the world, I am staying home as ordered by our state officials. It is such an unusual and unprecedented time and everyday things are changing. Our situation is so fluid meaning what we hear on the news in the morning, can completely change by the evening. I don’t know about many of you, but this unsettled world has me feeling so anxious and nervous. It also puts me on high alert because, as a person with a severely compromised immune system and a long history of health issues including asthma, I am fearful of everything I am learning about this illness.

Presently, I take immuno-suppressant medications that keeps my chronic disease under control, but severely taxes my system leaving me little to fight off infection or illness. I fall into that segment of society who are at high-risk of danger if I come into contact with anything going around.

Plans Change

I have not left my house for over 3 weeks. I don’t know if you recall through my recent posts and videos, but Nate and I had a trip to Colorado planned for our second anniversary and Nate’s golden birthday. (He turned 30 on March 30th) We were going in early March to Denver. Everything was booked, ski-hill passes were purchased, airfare and lodging reserved and paid for, sightseeing plans and a special anniversary/dinner was in the works. Nasir was going to Grammy and Grampy’s house for the week. We were so excited.

As more and more news broke out, it became apparent that we would have to cancel our vacation. I called my doctors and they advised me NOT to travel. They had insisted that in my condition and with little to no immune system to fight, going into an airport or on a plane was too dangerous at this time. Was I sad and disheartened to cancel all our plans? Absolutely. However, I trust my doctor, and if my doctor issues a grave warning like she did, there is no way I would go against her recommendations. I have been through too much in my life not to heed her warnings.

Everything Is Canceled

So, we, like many of you, decided to retract and cancel all our plans and reservations and stay home. Glued to the TV and internet we watched everything unfold in real-time. Rapidly changing, constantly fluid and more frightening by the moment, we stayed in and were gripped by what was happening in the world and right here at home. I needed to walk away from the screens and try to salvage what I could of our “vacation” by re-inventing a plan to enjoy our anniversary and Nate’s birthday. And we did. We kept Nasir home and the three of us did a “stay-cation” in our living room. We binged Netflix shows, took a few countryside drives, walked a trail or two in isolated places, we cooked a nice dinner on our two celebrations and WE STAYED INDOORS. My extent of “leaving the house” is going into my backyard.

Our Options

Nate is fortunate to have several weeks of vacation and PTO (Paid time off) that he is using up from his “essential” job. He works in a plant that has numerous employees, and from all indications, we felt that his going to work at this time was not wise because of community spread and he was able to use up his vacation to stay home so far. On the advice of my doctors, they suggest he take time off and stay home indefinitely, as to not bring anything home with him that puts me or Nas at risk.

It has been extremely stressful to work through the decisions of him returning to work versus staying home if he is able. Like many people, this serious crisis is forcing our hand to make hard choices to protect our family and none of the choices are easy. He stays home, we cut off our main income for the indefinite future. If he goes to work, then he risks exposure and bringing “it” home in a household that deals with an individual with little to no immune system to fight off any of this. I can’t tell you how scared or anxious I have been!!! I know I am not alone in saying this. ALL of us are scared.

We will find a way

As we navigate through the uncertainties and worries of this ever changing situation and confide in our doctors and families, we have been able to come up with Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C. Each one comes with its own set of concerns and heartaches. Do we take no pay? Can we survive on just my income? (I have exhausted myself looking into options –FFCRA-the Families First Act or Paycheck Protection-none of which apply to us) Do we send Nate to work? Should Nas and I stay with my parents and be apart from Nate for an indefinite duration?

We, are faced with life-altering decisions while we press ahead into the unknown. At least we have what we need. At least we can manage through each plan despite the difficulties of each choice. At least we have support. I remind myself all the time of the blessings I have before me and focus upon those. Many are not so fortunate, and it hits me over and over to imagine the unimaginable. We will work this out. No matter what sacrifice we make, it is small in comparison to so many others. No matter what, we all have had to work through so many rough spots of this situation and it’s not easy.

Moving forward

As we move forward, sometimes slowly, sometimes at a mad pace, the least I can do to keep myself occupied is what I do best. Crochet. So for the next weeks, months, whatever it takes, I will continue to bring you what I can of my craft. I will show up. Every day. I will bring some new projects, new patterns, light, laughter and a distraction from the craziness that is swirling around us. So, join me as we keep moving forward. Bring your hooks and your yarn, and for a few minutes a day try to focus on other things that distract us from our worries, and relax with our craft. Because in a time when so much is out of control, one thing we can be in control of us the choice to take a few moments to do something we love.

When we reach the end of this, and we will, I hope we can all move forward with more love, patience, and understanding of one another. The lessons we learn will be immense.

Sometimes things don’t go the way we expect and we have to improvise. Which is exactly what I had to do for this beautiful Chunky Basket. This is my latest project for the Funky with Chunky yarn event! Using Bernat Maker Big Yarn I created this very practical, very sturdy basket that is perfect for so much around the house. Great for storage, toys, organization, towels, you name it, one or more of these baskets will come in handy and look stylish, too!! I know for my house, this basket will be great for storing either yarn or Nasir’s toys. As many of you know, my dad is a serious amateur wood crafter. He enjoys carving and creating things from wood and has designed the fantastic wooden crochet hook handles I use due to my arthritis. Today, he created this beautifully carved crochet hook that he made from a branch found in his back yard. There is no narration to this video. This is simply the beauty of carving wood, meditative sounds for relaxation, and the process of which he uses to carve rustic handmade hooks. This hook is a great example of how resourceful one can be to turn ordinary items into something extraordinary. Enjoy this video.

It’s nearly shawl season here in Wisconsin. That time of year between the warm days of spring and the lingering days of winter, where we need more than a t-shirt but not a big bulky winter coat to ward off the chill of the evening. It’s the perfect time for a wrap or shawl to replace the heavy jackets we have been lugging around for months. Here is my Simple Spring Shawl to help! Simple, because it is a simple stitch throughout. This shawl can be made by anyone. Beginner to Advanced, everyone will be able to enjoy this project. Spring, because it’s the time of year where having a nice soft shawl to wrap yourself in is perfect when you need to keep yourself a little cozy when the breeze blows.

I love a versatile piece, and I love how lovely this one turned out! It can be worn not only around the shoulders, but you can wrap it around your neck as a nice scarf or even around your waist like a mini sarong. You can use my basic pattern as a starting point, but feel free to adjust or add to this pattern to make it the perfect size for YOU.

This shawl makes a great gift. Not only for yourself, but for a bride or bridesmaids, friends or family, people in a nursing home who always feel a little chilled. No matter who you make it for, it is sure to be treasured and used for a long time to come.

My Wee One Bonnet is a mix of moss stitch granny squares and a few other fun stitches that works up nicely in this cute unisex bonnet! I made this one in Marly Bird’s Chic Sheep Yarn in the color VIP but don’t be limited to that! You can make this in every color of the rainbow for all the babies or Wee Ones that you know!

This little bonnet has a bit of a square shape which makes this have a little bit of a vintage appeal. Many of the old school bonnets had a similar shape and this one is a sweet one to resurrect this fun look. One of these would make a lovely addition to any layette.

This bonnet is a year round wear item, but is perfect for fitting under a hood since it has little bulk. It is also nice for springtime to protect ears from a slight breeze or chill in the air. You can’t go wrong with one of these for your little one or for a gift!

I’m taking it “slow” this morning as I finish wrapping up our Valentine’s puns! I really enjoyed “hanging” with you these past two weeks sharing my projects. I really love it “a sloth.” Now that this series is over I can take a little time to “relax” maybe even have a cuppa “slothee.” Maybe be a little “anti-sloth-al” for a day or two and enjoy Valentine’s with this sweet boy. It feels like I have traveled the “universe” to find projects that are “out of this world”! I feel “over the moon” to add my One-Eyed Alien Hand Puppet to the mix! I try to be “down to earth” and find projects that appeal to all. This series has seen “galactic” popularity, but it is a big “comet-ment!” I just had to “space” them out just right. I don’t know anyone in the “galaxy” who likes puns as much as I do, so I had to “planet” out weeks in advance. The “sky is the limit” and I “moon” over the ideas for days. I do this because all of you are so “space-ial.” You think these puns are “solar-ious” and that inspires me to “meteor” expectations. I have “walked” through these punny patterns year after year. I try to “take steps” to bring a variety of fun projects and not “step on any toes” when making these. My Have A Heart Flip Flops are the perfect project to “heel” many of us from these long winter blues! I can’t be the “sole” individual that is getting a bit of cabin fever!? This winter has been “laced” with so much time to crochet, but it honestly is starting to consume my “sole!” Hopefully, a few of these projects will have you falling “head over heels” and eager to make some! This one is a “shoe-in” for one of the easiest! Just take it “one step at a time.” While you are working on this next punny project photo-tutorial, I am heading out for some “shoe-shi” with my “sole-mate!” Ok, I will stop here before I insert my “foot in mouth” any further! Ha!!

First, gather your supplies:
Flip Flops, Size H-5.00mm crochet hook, Scissors, Yarn needle, and some yarn.

Then make a slip knot and attach that loop to your hook. Work around the strap of the flip flop as you see in the photos below. Just make a single crochet stitch around the strap.

When you work around the toe separator in the sandal, just go from one side of that post to the other side. You do not have to work around that post at all.

When you are ready to fasten off, just chain 1, cut your yarn, and sew in your end.

You can make a flower or a heart or leave it plain. It’s totally up to you!

Here’s the pattern for the heart I added to my flip flop:

Heart: (Optional)

Round 1: Ch 3, 12 DC in 3rd Ch from hook, sl st to first st. (12)

Round 2: Ch 1, dc in the same stitch. [tr, tr, htr] in next st, [dc, hdc] in next st, 2 sc in next 2 sts, [hdc, dc, ch1] in next st, [dc, hdc] in next st, 2 SC in next 2 sts, [hdc, dc] in next st, [htr, tr, tr] in next st, [dc, ch1] in last st, st sl in the same stitch. Ch 201 or any odd number that will be the length of your scarf.

Row 1: HDC in 2nd Ch from hook, *Sl St in next Ch (loosely), HDC in next Ch, repeat from * across, Ch 1, turn.

My Happy Place

I think we can all agree that crochet itself is our happy place. Whether we are crocheting in our favorite chair, in bed, in the car or with a friend, the act of creating something beautiful from a ball of fiber is a joy. We are all united in this love, or we would not be on the pursuit of the next new project to get on our hooks. That is why I love to keep creating new things to share!

Started from the bottom, now we here

Not only is crochet my passion, but it is also my career. Each day, I get up to design, share, create, and express myself through my craft. One of my favorite places in my home is my own personal happy place. I know that I have shared in a previous blog some photos of the transformation of my craft room.

This was a photo the previous owner sent us of the room before we moved in. *YIKES!*

When Nate and I purchased this house, there was a room with a wood structure of floor to ceiling drawers. We initially thought to remove the structure and use this room as a bedroom, but the more we thought of it, the more it seemed like a waste yet, the entire thing was too obtuse and awkward to do much with. So my mom suggested that we remove the drawers and make each cubicle a shelf for storing yarn and in the middle make a studio so I can film tutorials.

Breathing new life: from old to new

As soon as that vision started to formulate the room came to life and over time I have added more to make it “my space.” I love to come in here to craft and create, to film and complete my patterns so that I may share them with you. I even come in here to just escape for a few minutes between the hectic moments of being a working wife and mama.

A room with purpose

This space has come a long way and still has a LONG way to go, but it is a space that makes ME feel good. It allows me to feel like I can come in here and create.

I put on some music, it is cozy, and I am surrounded by something I love: YARN!! Even Nasir loves to be in here with me, and my kitties think it’s their playground. For me, this room represents a part of me that feeds my purpose and keeps me, quite literally, from unraveling.

Share with me about your happy place! Is it a room or a favorite spot in your home? Is it with a friend that you can sit and craft with? Creating a space and time to do what you love is essential to keeping a good balance between our worries & stresses and all the things we love.

I hope all of you enjoy a few moments each day ‘In your happy place.’
