Recently, a catalog arrived in my mailbox with a unique selection of gift items for all ages. In typical fashion, I often find myself thinking about how to make similar items using crochet.
I fell in love with these darling booties that were similarly made out of fabric and set out to create a crochet pair designed only using yarn!
We all derive inspiration from various sources, but it isn’t always possible to recreate each design substituting yarn as fiber of choice but thankfully, this adorable pair of booties turned out to be quite the exception!
I hope you enjoy making your very own for a special infant. I give tips for increasing the sizing for any age in the video tutorial.

-You can make this bikini any size just by continuing or stopping your increases and making the straps/strings longer or shorter.

My Adult Mermaid Tail Afghan is such a fun project and has become wildly popular in the crochet community! I was contacted by the editor of Craft Ideas Magazine to be a contributor in their summer issue. They recently published my Mermaid Tail Afghan along with links to my blog and social media.
This is an exciting turning point for YARNutopia as this is my very first print publication for crochet. As a personal side note, getting this recognition and seeing this in print has filled me with a profound thrill. Knowing that this will be on newsstands across America is pretty epic for me! As I make these steps in my crochet career, this helps validate that I’m doing *something* right. It truly has humbled me to receive such positive feedback for this pattern. I’m very excited to realize this hard work has earned me some merit. I may have squealed something high pitched and danced around my living room when I received the email from the magazine editor asking me to participate in this issue.

I am a pun extraordinaire. (It should go on my resumé) I love a good pun, I like throwing down a good pun, and I think puns are fun! It isn’t unusual that when the opportunity presents itself, I jump on it and go a little overboard!
A couple years ago, I started a series of Valentine’s Day puns. I would create a crocheted item and come up with a clever tagline that associates with that item. 2016’s Valentine’s Day is no exception. This blog is 14 days of punny love overload. February 12th, 2016: I don’t want to burst your “bubble,” but in the “pecking” order of puns, this one isn’t quite fitting the “bill.” I have been up since the “quack” of dawn trying to think of a “soap”er duper idea for this Valentine’s post. All of them just sound “Daffy.” I won’t “duck” my responsibility because inside every determined heart, “soap rings” eternal, and all these puns are a way to “shower” you with my love! “Lather” is always the best medicine, so I’m going with this series of love notes and hope they go over “swimmingly.” “Waddle” I do if you don’t like it? I guess I’ll find out when you get “foam” sweet “foam.”
February 13th, 2016: In the words of Iggy Azalea, “First things first, ‘Amaryllis.'” So I will begin this pun by saying that everyone can tell that our love has truly “blossomed.” It has taken off on the “wings” of love. I know I have really “pollen” for you because whenever I think of you, I get “butterflies” in my stomach. I really hope this Valentine’s Day is “fly” filled with “butterfly” kisses and “ladybug” hugs. You always make me feel like I’m wrapped in a “cocoon” of your love. I “larva” you so much!! Oops-a-“daisy,” that last pun may have “flown” too far.
February 14th, 2016: Nate loves a good horror movie, I love crochet and “Poe”try, and we both love to love. I hope I’ve captured the essence of that in this last Valentine pun.
As these punny posts come to the end, I’ve got to “hand” it to you, you’ve definitely got “heart.” I hope you didn’t think they were “tachy.” I’ve tried to “organ”ize them so they always make sense. Just stop increasing at the point where you feel it has reached the size you are trying to accomplish, then jump to the directions for row 44 and make it however long you want it to be.
-Ch 2 at the beginning of row/round does NOT count as a stitch. (See video tutorial for clear instructions)
-The Blanket part is made using a K-6.50mm size crochet hook, and all the fins and embellishments are made using the I-5.50mm crochet hook.

Tail Fin Make 2 with I-5.50mm Crochet Hook With 2 strands of yarn in Gray, Work in the BLO
Row 1: Chain 52, DC in 3rd ch from hook and across, ch 2, turn (50dc)
Row 2: DC2TOG twice, DC in each stitch across, ch 2, Turn (48dc)
Row 3: DC in each stitch until the last 4 sts, DC2TOG twice, ch 2, turn (46dc)
Row 4-11: repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have 30 sts
Row 12: 2 DC in first 2 sts, DC across, ch 2, turn (32dc)
Row 13: DC in each st across until the last 2 sts, 2 DC in each of the last 2 sts, ch 2, turn (34)
Row 14-21: Repeat rows 12 & 13 until you have 50 sts.
Do not fasten off, continue to sc around entire piece.

Several weeks ago, a few of my friends contacted me showing me a photo they found online of a mermaid blanket. Not all mermaid blankets were exactly the same, so I did my own research and used variations of different stitches and patterns I found on the internet, I created my own mermaid afghan. Since I borrowed stitches from several different patterns (including this pattern by Mad Hooker), I combined them to make my own in this exclusive FREE pattern that I have written. Below you will find the instructions to make 3 different sizes (Small, Medium, Large). You can use any combination of colors to create the scale look. Sizing: Size Small will fit a child that is 4 feet-5 feet tall. The Medium will fit anybody that is 5 feet to 6 feet tall (this is the one I filmed), and the Large fits anybody over 6 feet tall. The Width for each is the same so it can fit larger or skinnier people. It measures approximately 50 inches wide.

Although I used Red Heart Yarns in this project, here is a great substitution of yarn that works great as well. Brava yarn by WeCrochet/Knit Picks
-Red Heart Super Saver Medium (worsted) weight yarn: The skeins of yarn are Approx.364 yds (333 m) per skein. Please keep that in mind when you are purchasing yarn.
Size Small: 2 skeins Macaw, 1 skein Jade, and 1 skein Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love) Size Medium: 3 skeins Macaw, 2 skeins Jade, and 2 skeins Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love) Size Large: 4 skeins Macaw, 3 skeins Jade, and 3 skeins Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
If you cannot get these exact brands of yarn, go to Yarnsub.com to find an equivalent type of yarn.
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
DC: double crochet
Sc: single crochet
Sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together
Notes:
-When you finish this project, you may sew up the “open” side to make this a full cocoon style. You may also crochet a single crochet around the entire edge to “cover up” the edges where you sew in your ends.
-To sew in your ends, just take a yarn needle and hide all the ends back into your work. (I do not show how to do this in this video, but if you watch any of my other video tutorials, I show how I sew in my ends if you want to do it like me).
-The chain is the same in all sizes, but if you dont want it that wide, chain something that is in groups of 6 +2. So if you chain something that is 114 + 2, you would have 116 chains. I hope that makes sense!
-Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc throughout.
–Change color after every row, sew in ends as you go
-sc2tog on “blanket” portion means to go into the middle st of 5dc group, yarn over, go into the middle st of the next 5dc group, yarn over, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
-To make the tail fin bigger: Repeat rows 2 and 3 for however big you want it to be (maybe 60 or 70 stitches), then repeat rows 14 and 15 to decrease for the other half. I hope that makes sense!
Small
Ch 153
Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (150 dc)
Row 2: sc in first dc, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in next st, skip 2 dc, sc in next st, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn (25 shells made)
Row 3: 2dc in same spot you chained up 3, skip 2 sts,* sc in next dc (the middle dc of shell), sk 2 sts, 5dc into sc, repeat from * until you reach the last sc, 3dc in the last dc, ch 1, turn
Row 4: Sc in first dc, skip 2 dc, *5 dc into sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next dc (middle DC), skip 2 sts, repeat from *, ending with a sc in the beginning ch 3, ch 3 and turn.
Row 5-50: repeat rows 3-4 (Your last row will need to be a repeat of row 3, so you may need to do an extra row at this point.) If you feel like this is not long enough, or too long, you can add or eliminate rows and just continue to work the next round whichever row you end on. Make sure to end on a repeat row of row 3. The blanket should reach from the top of your hips to right above your ankle at this point. If it does not, make more rows and then go onto the instructions for row 51.
Now you will be connecting and working in the round (continuous circle) I highly suggest watching the video to understand this part.
Round 51: Sc in ch 3 of beginning of row 50 (this completes the circle), *sk 2 dc, 5dc into sc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, repeat from *around, ending with sc in 3rd dc of prev row.
