Crochet Tutorial: Mermaid Tail Afghan Pattern—3 Sizes (Small: Child, Medium: Teen, Large: Adult)

MermaidAfghan
Several weeks ago, a few of my friends contacted me showing me a photo they found online of a mermaid blanket. Not all mermaid blankets were exactly the same, so I did my own research and used variations of different stitches and patterns I found on the internet, I created my own mermaid afghan. Since I borrowed stitches from several different patterns (including this pattern by Mad Hooker), I combined them to make my own in this exclusive FREE pattern that I have written. Below you will find the instructions to make 3 different sizes (Small, Medium, Large). You can use any combination of colors to create the scale look. This is an easy to follow pattern, and I highly recommend watching the video tutorial to follow along if you get stuck. Enjoy and Happy Hookin’! ~Nadia

Size Small will fit a child that is 4 feet-5 feet tall.
The Medium will fit anybody that is 5 feet to 6 feet tall (this is the one I filmed), and

Materials:
Although I used Red Heart Yarns in this project, here is a great substitution of yarn that works great as well. Brava yarn by WeCrochet/Knit Picks
-Red Heart Super Saver Medium (worsted) weight yarn: The skeins of yarn are Approx.364 yds (333 m) per skein. Please keep that in mind when you are purchasing yarn.
Size Small:  2 skeins Macaw, 1 skein Jade, and 1 skein Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
Size Medium: 3 skeins Macaw, 2 skeins Jade, and 2 skeins Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
Size Large: 4 skeins Macaw, 3 skeins Jade, and 3 skeins Peacock (Peacock comes in Red Heart With Love)
If you cannot get these exact brands of yarn, go to Yarnsub.com to find an equivalent type of yarn.

Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
DC: double crochet
Sc: single crochet
Sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together

Notes:

-When you finish this project, you may sew up the “open” side to make this a full cocoon style. You may also crochet a single crochet around the entire edge to “cover up” the edges where you sew in your ends.
-To sew in your ends, just take a yarn needle and hide all the ends back into your work. (I do not show how to do this in this video, but if you watch any of my other video tutorials, I show how I sew in my ends if you want to do it like me).
-The chain is the same in all sizes, but if you dont want it that wide, chain something that is in groups of 6 +2. So if you chain something that is 114 + 2, you would have 116 chains. I hope that makes sense!
-Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc throughout.
Change color after every row, sew in ends as you go
-sc2tog on “blanket” portion means to go into the middle st of 5dc group, yarn over, go into the middle st of the next 5dc group, yarn over, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
-To make the tail fin bigger: Repeat rows 2 and 3 for however big you want it to be (maybe 60 or 70 stitches), then repeat rows 14 and 15 to decrease for the other half. I hope that makes sense!

I enjoyed making this mermaid lap blanket. You did a great job. I carried my 3 balls of wool from row to row as in knitting so I didn’t have all those ends to tie in. I then did a single crochet all around the open edges catching and securing the carried wool. It turned out wonderful. Thank you.

So far so good. Going to do my nieces blanket. Then make the tail for the one I made myself. Then the tail for my niece. Mine turned out a little longer but I think I want it and will like it longer. Thanks so much. The video helped a ton.

How can you do 3. Sizes in a mermaid pattern small medium and large but all start with 153 chain that’s ridiculous surely I want to do a small one but not the same amount of stitches you wouldn’t have I know

  4. Sharon Freeman Avatar

The instructions say this is 50 inches wide. Using the J hook and 153 chains, with 25 shells, mine is only 40 inches. Anyone else with this problem? Using Caron medium weight yarn.

    1. Jess Avatar

Nope mine is 50, well 49, but close enough. Also used medium weight yarn.

Any advice on how to make the fin part of the tail bigger? I’m not sure if my stitches were too tight or if its the wacky yarn I have to buy (I live in China and finding medium weight yarn can be a nightmare).

I’m doing this for the first time…I’m making to small blankets. I’m almost to the fifty tired and the instructions say length wise it should be from the hip to above the ankle but it isn’t even close. What am I doing wrong/

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

Aww you’re not doing anything wrong, if you make more rows as long as you need it to be, then you can go onto the next part of closing the bottom. ~Nadia

I noticed it said that for all the sizes, I had the same issue. They can’t all be the same length!

Hi there! Thanks for creating and sharing of this pattern! I want to make one for my younger sister and this is incredible! But as i am a more or less complete newbie i was wondering – is it possible to make this as a slightly thicker blanket? Or will using thicker wool screw over the pattern?

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

You can definitely use thicker yarn, but I would suggest chaining less (see notes section) to make it a little smaller, because chunky yarn will make it extra big. Good luck and enjoy! ~Nadia

I recently purchased the yarn online to make this awesome afghan! The skeins of Jade Red Heart Super Saver are 364 yards as your directions stated. However, the skeins of Macaw Red Heart Super Saver are only 244 yards. My question is, were yours this different in size or will I need to order more of the Macaw to complete the afghan? Thank You!

Hi Nadia! I’m working on the medium now and don’t feel that it’s wide enough. Could you let me know what the width and length of your medium blanket are?

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

I’m sorry I do not have the blanket anymore to do the full measurements. If you feel that it is not long enough, you can continue with the repeat pattern until you are satisfied with the length and then go on to closing up the bottom. I hope you are able to finish this and enjoy it! ((Hugs)) ~Nadia

This is great! I’m trucking along nicely and thought I would mention a little trick I thought of.
Instead of trimming ends each row and having to sew them in, I’ve been “carrying them up” with the turning chain and then leaving the old colour behind as I work across! The turning chain is two different colours but as long as you use three colours, your next colour will always be waiting for you on the end you’re working towards!
    No sewing in ends!
    Hope that makes sense!

I did the same thing and it worked brilliantly!!!!!!!

I did this as well. I did not cut any yarn until the “foot” section and it was too difficult to continue this. I cut the yarn and tied it off, but did not even work anything in since it was going to be in the pouch.

Hi can you use DK yarn as I’m sure I seen it in pattern but can no longer see it thanks

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

Yes, you can definitely use DK yarn. You may need to repeat the shell design (repeat pattern) a little more to make it longer, but once you have it the length you’re happy with, you can go on to closing the bottom. Good luck!! ~Nadia

Help!!! I have unraveled this twice now because no matter how carefully and exactingly I follow the initial chain and DC instructions, I cannot come up with only 25 shells. What am I doing wrong? The math just won’t add up! If I chain 153, then make DC in every chain across, that’s 150 dc, then row 2 is merely skipping 2 dcs and making shells…I got about 100 shells, which makes sense when you do the math. Please help! I love this pattern, have the yarn and the Christmas clock is ticking! HELP!!! Thank you and it’s a darling pattern. I just want to succeed. Please advise? Karen

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

Sorry about that! I have edited the written instructions so hopefully it will be easier to read. I have had this question asked quite a bit. For row 2, You have to sc in first dc, *skip 2 stitches, put 5 double crochets in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc in next st, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn (25 shells made)

I am having the same problem. With 150 dc in the second row and you are skipping two, crocheting in the third you have to have at least 50 shells. I am normally a quick crocheter and am hoping to have this finished for Christmas.

Hi! I am also getting 50 shells…..I am following the pattern exactly as you’ve written, so it’s driving me nuts…..do I just stop at 25 and have an odd tail of 75 dc’s? Or do I do all 50 and continue from there?

I love this! And the pattern is so easy to follow! I’m running into one problem though, which is no matter how much I try I can’t get it to look very polished. It’s coming out very loose and messy looking. I’m still kind of a beginner, with only a handful of finished projects under my belt, but I’ve never had this problem. Could it just be my style, or maybe I should try a smaller hook??

Hello, I am down to the decrease rows. I have watched this part of the video 3+ times. It seems to me that when you are making the 5 dc in the sc that you are going in before the sc crochet stitch. It looks to me that you are going into the last dc of the 5dc shell. I am actually on row 71 and I have watched and re-watched and even unraveled a row to try to get it right. Actually, my blanket looks pretty good and I am wondering if this will make a huge difference. Thanks for the video, I am not sure I could have done any of this w/o it.

Hi I don’t know if you got my previous comment. I don’t know how long it takes to get a response. I have watched the video and found it very helpful; however I am now down to rows 66 + and it seems to me that on some of the rows you are going in before the sc stitch where you place 5 dc’s. I have gone back to beginning and again viewed and re-viewed the rows 66 + and I still think you are going in before the sc on some of the rows. Am I crazy? Does it matter that much? I have unraveled some of the rows because I really want to get this right, but I still see the same thing on the video. Please let me know. Thank you.

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I go into the single crochet to make the double crochets on the part you are talking about. Sorry it may seem as though I’m going into the double crochet before the sc. Just be sure to put the 5 double crochet in the single crochet and then go on to making your decreases. Good luck! ~Nadia

ok so I have made 3 of these now and i love them but this is the first time I have needed to make the width smaller. So it says it needs to be in groups of 6+2, but my question is if the original pattern is chain 153, but that is a group of 6 + 3. So I want say, 20 shells instead of 25, do I chain 120+2 or 120+3? Does that make sense? I just want to make sure it works out right. Thanks

I decreased farther up closer to the knee and then did 3 or 4 rows of that and then decreased again like that until i got the length I wanted and then decreased the rest of the way. its not puffy if you do it the way the pattern is written i just like it more tapered so it hugs the legs more.

Hi Christina, I understand that you decreased near the knee about 3 or 4 rows but I am not following you after that.. When did you next decrease and how many rows. Sorry, maybe I am just stupid.

so i would do a decrease row and then like 4 rows normal than decrease again and do that till I get the ankle area and finish decreasing.

        Does that make more sense?

Can someone tell me how to decrease more gradually so it won’t be so puffy. Would appreciate it.

Hi, I’m making this for a Christmas gift. I’m using variegated blue/grey yarn for the body and thinking about a solid color for the tail. So would I need 4 big skeins of the variegated to complete the main blanket and a separate for the tail or would 3 big skeins work for the body and 1 for the tail? I sure hope she loves it. So far, I love the look! Thank you so much for this pattern.

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

You may need the full 4 skeins, depending on how many yards each skein of yarn is. You will need about 1500 yards of yarn to make this blanket in the Medium Size. If you are making the large size, you may need more yarn. Good luck! These definitely make great gifts! ~Nadia

Thank you so much for this pattern. I just finished making one for my great granddaughter. I will give it to her for Christmas. I did add extra rows as she is quite tall. I also used double yarn to make and arpttach the tail. Your video is wonderful, so easy to follow. Thank you for taking all that time to make it so easy. I love the result.

I’ve wanted to make my own for a while, and just when I was making plans to use my blue scrap yarn, I got some custom orders for amigurumi dolls and a mermaid tail!
Yarnutopia has taught me a lot about crochet, so I’m considering this pattern, but I really like this video,

    except it is in Japanese!

I see that someone else asked this but I didn’t see an answer. It says 6+2 but looks like the original pattern is 6+3 for 153. Can you please clarify because I need to make this smaller for my 3 year old. Thanks!

Finished a mermaid afghan for my 24 yo daughters birthday present! Ha! Even big girls like these things…she actually sent me your blog link, think she saw it on Pinterest. I’m about to upload my finished product on my ravelry, so I’ll link it to your pattern so you can see. Really cute.

I’m so excited, I just started a small one of these for my colleagues daughter! I was just wondering about the color changes… why have you suggested 2 skeins of one colour but only 1 skein for each of the others? Should the colour changes go 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2,3 or is it more that there is a primary colour that you alternate with the other smaller colours? So like 1,2,1,3,1,2,1,3? Sorry if confusing! Just want to make sure I have the right amount 🙂

Hi! I love these! I don’t like the idea of sewing in all the loose ends, can I work this as a continuous round from start to finish? What do you suggest? Thanks again!

Hi Nadia…I made this for my granddaughter who is 7 for Christmas and I did the medium size one but something went wrong and I already weaved in all the ends and sewed it closed and just noticed that it’s not big enough I think I crocheted to tight.. would you know if I washed it and stretched it out if that would work to make it longer?

Just curious how long this might take to make?My daughter wants one of these and I am thinking about starting it for a Christmas present. Was going to go with a variegated color she likes at Walmart so I wont have to change colors. This is beautiful and she will love it. Thanks for sharing the pattern. I have never really followed a pattern so this will be a first. My grandma taught me simple stitches and how to continue in a row by turning or crocheting in the round. If she was still with us I would have her help me. 🙁

I started making this for my daughter. Only on the foundation chain right now. She wants only one color it is a vargated yawn. (Hot pink, green, blue and purple) Will this look ok like this. I am thinking I need a solid color to break it up and to get the look that yours has. Also how long did it take you to finish this? Thanks so much for sharing this pattern. I can’t wait to finish this. My daughter is excited as well.

I am so in love with this pattern. My daughter is going to love it. I decided to take a stab at making a matching one for her 18″ doll. I can’t write a pattern very well but I chained 63 and then followed your pattern for 22 rows (although I worked the whole thing in the round) then did the decrease row, normal row, decrease row, normal row and sewed close. On the tail, I chained 23 and followed your pattern with row nine being the double decrease and 10 being the double increase. I still have all the ends to finish and I’ll send pics. Thanks so much

Hi there! I am attempting this. I am confused with line 4. Chain 3, chain 3, turn. Do I put the hook in between the chain 3s or just end up with a chain 6? :s
    My brain thinks differently.

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

Sorry! I have to fix that! It is just chain 3. not a chain 6.

Hi, thanks for the pattern. Could you tell me if this would work? Making a size small with two skeins of jade and two skeins of macaw – alternating the jade and macaw for the blanket/leg part, and then using macaw for the fin. Do you think I would have enough of the macaw left for the fin or need to purchase an extra skein?

Hello, I have completed the blanket part and am almost finished with the tail. I watched the video on this and on row 14 in the video you put 2dc in the first two st, but in the written instructions you say 2dc in the first st and then dc across. I followed the video for the entire tail, but I notice in the written instructions you say rows 16 -23 repeat rows 14 – 15. I followed the video and only put the 2dc in the first st and then dc across as you show in the video for rows 16 – 23. But someone following only the written instructions will not put the 2dc in the first 2 st on row 14. My tail looks even and I am getting ready to do the finishing rows 1 – 4. I still think in the video starting at minute 42, it looks like you are putting the 5 dc in the last dc of the previous row and not the sc. I have re-watched this a lot.I did not watch the video for the last rows on the blanket, but followed the written. I ended with 2 shells but when I folded it to sew together the 2 shells were not aligned as yours in the video. After saying all this, I want you to know that I never could have done this without the video. I am making this for my granddaughter for Christmas. Also, I did not get 50″ across. I got only 44″, but I think it will be big enough. I made the small size. She is 8. Thank you again for the pattern and video.
