365 Days of Granny Squares

In this section of my blog, you will find links to 365 Days of Granny Square tutorials that I will be releasing over the course of a year. I know it’s a leap year this year, and you  may find a bonus video in here somewhere. Ha!

Below, you will find a thumbnail photo of each granny square. If you click the image, it will take you to the video tutorial. Not all links will have written patterns since these are all very simple small projects. All squares will be roughly around the same size so they can be sewn together and attached at the end of the year. These squares do not have specific names.

I change color frequently on my rounds of the granny squares, but you can make yours solid or change colors as much as you’d like. This is a scrap yarn project.

There are a variety of sizes in the squares, they are not all the same size. Some may come out a little bigger or a little smaller. You may do whatever you’d like with these squares, but soon I will be showing how to attach the squares for you to make fun things. You can make bags, bedspreads, baby blankets, lap blankets, coasters, etc. An afghan (lap blanket) will take approximately 80 squares. A baby blanket may take approximately 64 squares.

I have segmented this series by months of the year. Check back to this page often, as I will be adding a new one every day!

I came across this great blog earlier this year written by Confessions of a Yarn-a-holic. It’s about the history of the Granny Square, and it ties into our 365 Day project. Just a short interesting tidbit of some random knowledge. It gives you a background on the historic roots that Granny Squares have.

Read about my first project I made using the Granny Squares from this year so far.

Read about my second project I made using the Granny Squares from this year so far.

Read about my third project I made using the Granny Squares from this year so far.

Read about my fourth project I made using the Granny Squares from this year so far.

Read about my fifth project I made using the Granny Squares from this year so far.

Enjoy your Granny Square creations!

If you want to attach your granny squares, be sure to view this video to learn how to do just that!

I’ve started a little late and I’m really looking forward to this project! I have just completed square #2 and my two squares are not the same size, #1 square is as big as 4 rounds on #2. What have I done wrong?? Thanks for any help.

Mine were different sizes also. Did you figure out if that is how it is supposed to be?

    2. Cleodhna Avatar
      Cleodhna

They should be roughly the same size. I haven’t made al of them, but some turn out a little bigger or smaller, but not quite so much as a whole row. I find that with granny squares, owing to the way I tend to work, more solid squares can come out a little bigger– maybe my stitches are too tight when I’m doing a looser square. The less solid, though, the stretchier they will be and they should sit together well when they’re all sewn together. If they’re really dramatically different you can always compensate by doing rows of single crochet until they’re the same size, but they should be pretty much the same.

I love your story. You are an amazing, beautiful, strong, talented woman! I am in awe. So many things I want to do on your site and I am a grandmother that has been crocheting for most of my life so for me to find new, unique, exciting patterns says a lot! I thank you for your hard work so that I might reap the benefits but how do I show my support to you?

    Nadia,

You’ve made me a convert. I’ve been diligently following along every day on 365 DOGS (Did you realize that Days of Granny Squares could be abbreviated as DOGS? ha!). As a newbie I crave written patterns so that I can go back and refer to what you’ve shown on your YouTube tutorials without having to replay the entire video. I understand that you simply don’t have written patterns for many of your ‘simple’ squares BUT…

…oftentimes you pause during a video and seem to be referring to some notes or pattern of sorts. I realize these may be squares that you’ve found in an already published book or pamphlet and you don’t want to infringe on any copyright matters so can’t provide a written pattern. I get frustrated that I can’t see these notes/patterns too. So while I binged on repeated iterations of Day 16’s square yesterday I did some thinking…

Your work and dedication is phenomenal and certainly should be rewarded. (Other readers – there’s a button you can click on Nadia’s YouTube channel to donate.) Beyond the donation button on your YouTube channel though I think you might solve a couple of issues by becoming an Amazon Associate. (No, I’m not associated with Amazon in any way.)

When I realized that you weren’t going to be putting the patterns for your squares on your blog I went to my source – Amazon – looking for books of Granny Square patterns. I ordered several. I NEEDED to have written patterns. If there had been a link on your blog to go to a specific book for each day’s pattern I’d’ve happily clicked over to Amazon that way. If you were an Amazon Associate that click would’ve garnered you a small donation. I’d’ve been happy, you’d’ve been happy, the author of the book would’ve been happy, Amazon would’ve been happy. I’d have expanded my crochet book library (yeah, I didn’t have one of those before Jan 1 & 365 DOGS!) and known where to look for the written pattern whenever I wanted to refer to it. By purchasing the title from Amazon via a link on your blog I would’ve also painlessly made a small contribution for your hard work and we would have all supported the author of whatever book I was purchasing.

Now I can understand not wanting to turn your blog into a commercial enterprise but I honestly don’t think anyone of us who are following you would object to a simple Amazon link that supports your work. You could do a poll if you’re worried about offending your followers.

Research Amazon Associates (there’s a wiki on the program here … http://www.wikihow.com/Become-an-Amazon-Associate) and discuss it with those you trust and see if maybe this would be a win-win-win situation for all of us.

    Thanks for reading.

    ~BJ

I am 64 coming very close to my 65th birthday. My grandma used to crochet and 2 years ago I started to learn how to do it. It was hard work to start and I made my first granny squares that have now been thrown in the bin, they where really bad. But I did give in, now I manage to do a couple of squares a night, up until now I have been making just plain simple squares, until the other day when I found your wonderful site, they are such a pleasure to make and so wonderful to see when they are finished. Also you make it so easy to follow, unlike so others I have seen demonstrated on you tube. You go step by step and take it at pace that even a poor old arthritic, 64 year old Grandad can follow.
Many thanks, it will now turn my Granddaughters blanket into more than that, it will be a living picture when finished. All thanks to you.
Yes even a male that has great trouble using a crotch hook to start with can find that within time with a lot of struggles and heart ache. You find that it actually helps yours hands to start working again. I will never be able to turn out more than 2 squares a day.
But now with this great site it gives me something new to try every day.
Thank you so much Nadia, and I will follow your page every day and look forward to each and every offering you make, So it doesn’t matter whether you are young, old, male or female, get yourself a few balls of yarn, a pair of scissors a crochet hook and a needle, then find Nadia’s site and get started on a wonderful adventure. You may struggle to start but in the end with a few mistakes along the way, you will find that you can make these beautiful squares.
    You will not be sorry.
Thank you again and I look forward to more great little works of art, because that is what they are and they will be something to treasure for many years to come.

    Hey Nadia
How may squares do you need to make a blanket?
And I want to thank you again you inspire me to keep a smile on my face and to keep creating. I have been sick and the doctors have no idea what I have.. So they have now sent me to a research hospital. I hope to keep up on this project and make a blanket or two for my girls.
I hope your feeling better or at least having more good days than bad.

    1. Nadia Fuad Avatar

Approximately 80 squares will make an afghan. You can add more or less to make a bigger/smaller blanket. I’m so sorry to hear that your doctors are unable to help you, but hopefully the research hospital will come up with a health plan for you to keep you on the right path. Sending positive vibes your way! Enjoy the patterns!! ~Nadia
