I have been struggling to make cardigans or a sweater for some time. I have tried different patterns but had difficulty following some of them and creating something that would be worth wearing. I gave up, until I found this!
This week I was experimenting with different patterns and I came across this Granny Square Cocoon pattern from Maria Valles. I knew instantly that I had to make it! It was the perfect design and easy to follow. I’ve made a few of my own modifications, and I used an entirely different color scheme, but that’s the joy of crochet! I added an accent color on the edging to give it a fashion flair.
Here are a few photos of me wearing my finished piece. I added a gemstone brooch as a front enclosure to tie the piece together. I LOVE IT!

Scissors
To make this smaller or bigger, Measure from the bottom of the neck to the bottom of the buttocks and your Granny Square should be that wide. Then follow along with the rest of the pattern for the outer edge and sleeves.

your tutorial was great thanks for sharing. I was wondering what would you suggest i do to make this in a larger size
My suggestion would be to measure from the base of the neck down to below the buttocks, and make a granny square that long. and then continue the pattern with the “collar” and the sleeves just like the video. The same concept goes for if you want to make it smaller. Thank you!! ~Nadia

Would that make it longer or bigger around? I wear either a 2x or 3x so I might need it bigger around – thank you!!
I’m a large lady, and have decided to keep increasing the square, and when I think it might be big enough, I’m going to safety pin it into the design and try it on. Then I will just continue increasing and trying on. Should be was enough that way! 🙂

Can you write out a pattern that you use for your own video, the way you make it and share thr pattern. I have watched your video and cant right out your instructions fast enough.

The short answer is no, I don’t have a pattern. My original post was really meant to be more of a general “recipe” or method that you can apply to your own version than a specific pattern for the exact shrug that I made. I’ve broken down the steps below – hopefully it’s a little more clear.”
I’m relatively new to making granny squares and I get tired of pausing the video to stop and crochet and then start it up again and sometimes i lose my place because I’m using my kindle to follow the video and gets rewinded too far back or too forward. Maybe you can get her permission to write out a pattern for your video. I’m wanting to make this for my niece for christmas and she was the one that showed this to me but I’ve never made anything like this.

your slip not does not tighten up like you show in video. Still leaves a hole in center.
I finally saw the video for this. now my question to you is to do with how much yarn I will need. our skeins come in 7 ounce/198 grams/364 yards or 333 m. that is written on one ball of wool. so how many balls do I need. I can crochet but the math yuck lol thanks so much
You will need 4 skeins of the 7 ounce balls. I hope that helps! 28 ounces is the total of what you will use in this project.

i love this cardigan. I made one for myself with an all cotton yarn. I worn to my doctor’s office and she asked me to make one for her. I showed her your photos but she wanted it in all black. I was wondering if I could use your photos on my website? If not, I understand.

Love this and i am working on it now. Is it normal for the sides to be a little tighter and the corners to stick out a little more? Hope that makes sense. Maybe because theres more bulk in the corners with the 3 dc’s, ch 2, 3 dc’s?

Hi thanks for the great tutorial. I am making myself something for a change. Normally all my items are sold for support fund for missionaries. So I noticed in on of the comments you addressed the issue of sizing. I was curious about that since I’m fairly short. Measuring from the base of my neck to below my buttocks means shortening the pattern to 29″ instead of the 41 1/2 that 105cm equals…..does that seem accurate? Is the pattern quite oversized initially? Thanks again!!!
How long did it take you to make this?
I was able to make it in a matter of a few days but everyone crochets at various speeds.
Yes, it ended up taking me 3 days. I was 1 day late for a birthday present but I did change a couple of things.
Is there a pattern or tutorial for one in a toddler size?

I’m a beginner and trying to understand the way this cardigan is put together, but just not getting it. Is this one big square then folded corners to make the arm holes?
How did you finish your shawl without it cupping at the bottom behind your legs. I have made two and they both cup. Thank you. Each measure about 41-42″ square
I live this tutorial. I made a granny square shrug for myself and l’m getting compliments. I would like to make one for my granddaughter who is 6 years old and is size 7/8. Can you recommend the size the square should be for a girl this size. Mine was 41?inches square and I’m a large in women’s size.thank you.

I’m going to fold up a piece of paper as a model before I begin as I’m wondering if I could do the Sophie’s Garden mandala and then square it off as a granny square. I see suggested many times to add more rows to the square to make it wider but not longer. If I did that, what do I do at the end of the row where the corners would be? Is it just 1 dc then turn, ch3 and 3 dc in the next space? Thanks for your help!

Is there any chance you could be more specific on how you got your hole so well cinched up? You say in the video (fantastic vid, by the way) that you were sewing the hole to close it up but I can’t seem to make it any smaller.

You basically have to make a square that measures from the neck to the knees and you can follow the instructions to make the outer edge and the sleeves. You can make this any size you want. ~Nadia

Nadia, thank you so much for the tutorial. I made one and since it was my first I gave it to one of the young ladies in my church. The response was OVERWHELMING. If I wanted to make one of these cardigans for a lady who is somewhat rounder than you, do you think it would work to make an oblong rather than a square? Just making a bigger square would dangle the back down past her knees.
