Crochet Tutorial: Summer Shawl

Crochet Tutorial: Summer Shawl

It’s that time of the year when those summer days can turn into cool summer nights and you need that perfect wrap just to cut that chill while you’re sitting around a fire or taking a walk along the beach. Why not create this shawl that would be beautiful and the perfect accessory to any outfit. It would be the perfect Mother’s Day gift, a gift you could make for your bridesmaids, or a hit for anyone on your gift list, any time of the year!

I used this ombre yarn by Lion Brand Yarns Shawl in a Ball in the color Community Coral. I fell in love with the feel and look of this textile! I designed a simple repeat pattern making this a quick, easy, yet stunning wrap in less than two days. Perfect for a cool evening to wear over a sundress or top. The versatility of this piece allows for several ways to wear!

Summer Shawl
This summer shawl is perfect for cooler nights, chilly mornings, and anytime you need to be wrapped in a bit of warmth. Shown below is the front view with it tied.

Crochet Tutorial: Hometown Honey Sunhat

Crochet Tutorial: Hometown Honey Sunhat

For the first time, I tried my hand at crocheting with raffia yarn. It was definitely an interesting experience in trying something new. I made this floppy brim Hometown Honey Sunhat! Just in time to protect yourself from the rays! Whether on the beach or in the garden, this will come in handy!

Working with raffia while creating this hat was interesting. I may have to try again on another project to fully provide a fair opinion of this type of yarn. I ran into a few frustrating challenges, but still managed to achieve a decent result. Some tweaking and blocking this hat pattern will continue to improve its look.

Hometown Honey Sunhat2
When working with Raffia Yarn, always remember, you will have to give your hands a rest from time to time. Depending on the type of Raffia you use in your project, it can be a little rough on the hands.

Hometown Honey Sunhat3
In making this hat, my initial concern was over the hook size because of the pattern it was creating. The yarn looks thick/bulky, but it is actually quite thin when you start working with it. It created a stitch that wasn’t as tight as I expected it to be using my G6 crochet hook. Be aware of that when you start your project. This Raffia yarn is also not as firm as I expected it to be in the final product.

Hometown Honey Sunhat
When I wore the hat, the brim of the hat was very floppy and did not hold a firm shape. I had a feeling that would happen while I was crocheting this in the video tutorial. At that point, I realized I had to do something to acquire the the wide brim look that I was hoping for. I decided to block this piece after I had my dad photograph it.

Below you will see the photo of the hat in the blocking process. I pinned it to a towel and saturated it with water. It will be dry within 24 hours and it should hold a better shape. Upon doing further research, I have learned that you can also starch raffia/straw sunhats by using liquid spray starch or making your own starch with 16 oz. of hot water mixed with a tablespoon of corn starch. You can spray the mixture on your hat. It will not wreck it, and it will give you a more desired shape.

For those of you who want a floppy brim, the original result will give you that. It’s cute no matter what!!

Crochet Tutorial: Fine Dining Bow-tie Bib

Babies are notorious for making messes. Meal time can often be an experience between how much food is consumed versus how much food ends up all over the kitchen.

Today’s tutorial is this Fine Dining Bow-tie Bib. This week we launch a series of baby boy related crochet items. The introduction starts with this cute and very simple accessory.

Bibs make wonderful gifts, and although this has been designed with a boy in mind, a few modifications can transform this bib into a gender friendly piece for boys or girls. Be sure to protect those cute clothes underneath with this fashionable cover-up.

Follow instructions below for the video tutorial and written pattern.
