Are You Hooked on the Eclipse?

Are You Hooked on the Eclipse?

I took the day off from work and filming in the studio to attend an eclipse viewing event here in Central Wisconsin. This was a free community event that was hosted at our local high school. The event coordinators passed out special glasses so everyone could view the eclipse safely.

They had pinhole boxes, telescopes reflecting the eclipse and other viewing devices to make this a pretty spectacular viewing event. There were about 200 people in attendance from our small community which made this even more exciting to share it with others as equally eager as we were.

Central Wisconsin was at its peak of 83% totality at approximately 1:13pm CST. The moon left a small crescent of sun still peeking out from behind it before things began to slowly brighten up again. We did not experience complete darkness, but we did have a dusk-like light and definitely experienced a drop in temperature cooling things by several degrees. I have to admit, as someone who is fascinated by our solar system, astronomy, and space/universe in general, I was a pretty excited to experience this cosmic event. It makes you feel small in such a vast universe.

My dad, who we all know and love for his behind the camera work in our videos, was once again behind the camera during this event as he tried to capture small clips of the various stages of the eclipse.

He was able to capture a couple pretty remarkable photos of it as well.
Since the event at the high school began nearly 2 hours before the actual eclipse would occur, we brought blankets and lawn chairs as well as a picnic lunch to make our viewing party even more fun.

I also brought along my crochet project presently in the works. I am in the process of designing a mesh tunic for under Nate’s Halloween costume. I’m never far away from a project, so it was inevitable that I would pull out my latest project to work on during the time before viewing the solar eclipse!

I have to say, this was an above average viewing event and not one bit boring even if it was not full totality. I loved that the weather cooperated. It was a beautiful sunny 78 degrees Fahrenheit with very little cloud coverage which made visibility pretty neat. I’m happy to say that I lived to experience this in my lifetime as the last one was nearly a dozen years before I was born. It was “totality” worth it! What a memorable day this was!

Where were you viewing from and what did you see? What was on your hook while the moon passed over the sun? Share your Eclipse story in the comments! Enjoy a few clips from today’s view from Central Wisconsin, USA.

Crochet Tutorial: The Cozy Colossal Blanket

Crochet Tutorial: The Cozy Colossal Blanket

Days turned into weeks, that turned into months, and I finally finished. My crochet hand and arms had a mega workout, but it was so worth the effort. This beautiful chunky yarn blanket using Red Heart Irresistible Yarn is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever made for the home. Just in time for cold nights and winter winds, it truly is…irresistible.

This blanket is an investment piece. These chunky yarns are not skeins you are going to find in a bargain bin. They can be pricey. This is one of those projects where coupons and sales come in handy!! This is definitely a piece you want to have for your home or for a gift to someone VERY special. Side note–this blanket does shed, and I personally have not felted mine to reduce the shedding, but you can opt to do whatever you feel.

I made my project in stripes, but you can make it in a solid tone. It’s a striking blanket no matter what you decide to do. This afghan is extremely heavy–I would guess about 10-12 pounds, maybe more! This is a very trendy and popular piece that you find in high end home decor.

Nadia’s Deserted Island Survival Kit

Nadia’s Deserted Island Survival Kit

Someone posed the question to me recently, “If you were stranded on a deserted island, what would you bring?”

You may think this would be a no-brainer for me that I would list off my favorite crochet items:

• My favorite H-5.00mm crochet hook
Yarn
• Scissors

Honestly, I would NOT bring any of these things! Why, you ask? Because as crafty as I am, I could carve myself a hook out of a stick. Using some of the island stones, I could sharpen them to use as a cutting and carving devices.

Anddd, I could find plenty of vines or stems to use as substitute fiber. Crochet will be my go-to survival skill that will come in handy for many reasons! I just need to get creative in this situation. This is coming from someone who’s not the biggest fan of the open wilderness and rustic nature adventures. I like the idea of glamping, but we are talking about the “hypothetical,” “in my dreams,” not reality, but “if you can imagine it” scenario. In which case, I would bring

• A pair of gloves, because I literally will touch anything if I’m wearing something on my hands. I need those to touch all the fish and critters, and I can tear out those stems and cut those vines to thatch together.

• A big box of matches so I have a fire to sit by while I scheme and crochet my way off that island

• And my mom (can I say that?) hahaha!

You may ask why not bring Nate?! Well, my mom has a litany of post-apocalyptic survival skills and stays super cool in a crisis. She can also keep me from completely falling apart so, if I am going to survive and hopefully find a way off this imaginary island, my mom would be the one to get me there.

Besides, I need someone on the home front to send out that search party and provide the ultimate romantic ending to my rescue story. You know, the proverbial hot guy at the end of the pier waiting for me to get off the rescue boat and run into his arms? The one who fought through everything to find me? Come on…. This is my deserted island rescue fantasy scene, let me indulge. Don’t worry, Nate definitely has THAT role.

So now I ask you, if you were stranded on a deserted island what THREE things would you bring? What would be your story? Share in the comments!

Crochet Tutorial: Destiny Headband

Crochet Tutorial: Destiny Headband

If you are following me on my blog or any social media, you will recall that I released my Link to the Past Phrygian Cap last week as Part One of the Halloween cosplay costume designs that I am creating for Nate and myself.

Today, Part Two of the costume set, is this Destiny Headband. This is a bit of a tedious process using thin thread and crocheting around wire, but the results are worth the efforts! Continue to stay tuned to more great patterns along the way to complete one or both of my costume series!

Not into the costume idea? Make a headband with just leaves! You could also use the leaf applique separately for flowers or anywhere you would need to add a decorative embellishment.

Crochet Tutorial: Link to the Past Stocking Cap

Crochet Tutorial: Link to the Past Stocking Cap

As many of you may recall, each year I design, create, and model an EPIC cosplay costume ensemble for Halloween. If you have been following my blog, you remember 2 years ago my Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter Costumes here or last year, The Beauty and The Beast costumes here.

Each year I try to challenge myself to something new. I began my 2017 costumes over the weekend and will release pieces over the next few months just in time for Halloween. Each video tutorial and written pattern will be FREE, and although many patterns will be related to the costume ensemble, several will be great to create on their own!!

One such piece is this Link to Past Stocking Cap. This unique Phrygian Cap is the first in a series of several videos that will be made to complete our costumes as Link and Zelda!! For those who are on my social media, it didn’t take long for the guesses to come in and easily many of you knew immediately what I was in the process of creating.

This design is very versatile. If you are not a fan of the video game or gaming scene, this can be made in any color as just a stocking hat in time for cooler weather. You can even use two tones by making your reverse single crochet stitches in a complimentary color to the hat. Red and White would make a peppermint swirl, or Red and Green would make a cute holiday hat. Removing the side laces and adding a bell on the end of the conical shape would make a darling elfin hat!

Shop Red Heart, America's Favorite Yarn

There are many fun ways to explore broadening this pattern to other great creations! For those of you who are on board to see what I create for Halloween, stay tuned for the next several weeks as I reveal more pieces for this EPIC cosplay creation. Nate and I are very excited to share another great costume with our wonderful YARNutopia community!
