Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day

When I arrived in this world, I am told, I was born with a paralyzed side of my face and the inability to open my left eye. From early photos, I always was the one with the very strange expressions and an odd look on my face. My mom always told me how beautiful I am and said it didn’t matter that my eye wouldn’t open, and God made me that way so everyone would think I am giving them a *wink* and fall in love with me. That is how my mom is. She sees the bright side in things. She is looking for the good in every situation–the silver lining–no matter how difficult life could be, she taught my brothers and me the same. Imperfections and differences make you beautiful, and that same thought applies to each piece I make by adding some “imperfect” characteristic.

We never had much, but we always had enough, and we always appreciated everything my parents were able to give us and make happen for us. I was given a strong work ethic, and that is why I do what I do by pouring my heart into each stitch of every piece I create. I could easily be doing any job and the same ethic would apply because it has been instilled in us by a mother that insisted we do the work. We learned how to cook, clean, pick up after ourselves and do laundry from a young age so we could appreciate how hard it is and never take people or things for granted; to have pride in doing and completing a job right from the beginning so we didn’t have to do it again and again.

My mom has walked with me through my journey with Crohn’s disease, and with each step, she has promised that I will never be alone as long as she can draw breath. She is responsible for my love of crochet when she handed me my first crochet hook and ball of yarn and taught me this craft. Little did she know how much this would mold my life and become a lifeline and a form of therapy for long hospital stays. To have the support and love is a gift I shall always cherish. But more than that, I realize I will never be lonely with her by my side, to look for the good and positive no matter what the situation, never feel sorry for myself, and that I always have a forever friend.

My mom is not like other moms. She and I have been through so much in this life. Whenever my brothers and I have troubles or burdens, it’s easier to bring them to my mom and she takes them away and makes everything better. My mom has been by my side at every hospital stay, every doctor visit, every medical test, even when doctors couldn’t help me, she helped me get through it all. I will never be able to thank my mom enough for all that she has done, is doing, and will do for me.

My mom is my best friend.

I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for her.

My mom never gave me any idea that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do, or be who I wanted to be.
She has taught me to have appreciation in everything I have and never take anything for granted. She has taught me how to love unconditionally, and she inspires me every day to make a difference in this world, even if it’s to help few or many. She is my biggest fan, and she is the closest thing to Superwoman anybody could ever be.
Please join me in wishing her and all the other moms (and dads or role models who fill those shoes) a fantastic day! It’s a thankless job sometimes, and you deserve more than one day of recognition.

We’re tying the knot with yarn!

On March 4th, 2017, while traveling through Europe, Nate surprised me with a spontaneous proposal in the Amsterdam Schipol Airport. As we were heading to the bathrooms (haha!) he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!

He was shaking, I was shaking, I was crying, and of course, I said YES! We’ve been talking about it for some time now and all the plans we were making were leading to this exciting event.

It was very fitting that we had this private moment that included the two of us, my brother and my mom who was able to capture these lovely photos.

No matter how tired we were from all the traveling, our joy carried us through our 13 hour layover where we ventured into Amsterdam city for a celebration dinner.

Upon arrival back to the United States, and of course after letting my close friends and family know this exciting news, we started making immediate plans for our wedding.

We are looking ahead and planning an early 2018 wedding celebration. We recently had some engagement photos taken and made our formal announcement on our personal social media accounts. We now wish to share it with all the YARNutopians!

Photo credit: Fuad Azmat (My daddy!)

As we journey ahead in the next year planning our event, we are excited to tie in elements of our cultures and OF COURSE, elements of crochet! I am going a different route on my dress, as many have already asked me if I was going to crochet my wedding gown, but I am absolutely 100% going to incorporate other small details of crochet for this special day.

I’m excited to share this year-long journey with my amazing YARNutopia family and I will be creating tutorials of fun elements that I plan to use on the big day!

I am excited to hear suggestions on crochet projects that you have used for your special events! I’m always open to hearing, so please feel free to share your ideas!! This will be a fun way to share this together!

Please join us in sharing our joy and happiness as we move onto this new and exciting chapter of our lives!

Nadia and Nate

Crochet Tutorial: Lemons to Lemonade Pillow

I have always had a “zest” for life, and “lime” so grateful to be able to do what I love. For the past 2 weeks, my creative “juices” have been going in high gear to bring you this series of puns leading up to Valentine’s Day. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I have!! At times, I may have blurred the “limes” between humorous and pushing too far. I’m sure some were a bit “sour” and others made you “peel” with laughter. Today’s pun is no exception. This pillow is “juice” the cutest way to end our series and allows me to “ex-press” how much all this means to me. I do this for YOU! I plan to “wedge” this under me to provide something to “curdle” up with once my procedure and biopsies are over. I’m so lucky to have my “main squeeze” with me during these tests! My life is made up of many “making lemonade” moments. Any way you “slice” it, was a perfect way to bring this series to a close. So, time to “pucker up” and get this procedure done! Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone! Sending you all my love!! I also want to say a special Happy Valentine’s Day to my Nate for taking the day off work to be with me today.

Crochet Tutorial: Fish Amigurumi

We are “bass-ically” coming to the end of our Valentine’s puns. I “fish” we had more time because I’m having so much “fin!” I have a “boat-load” of material. I’m not being “koi” about it. With only a few days left, I’m not about to “swimmer” down. Instead, I’m over here, “kraken” myself up! I “sardine-ly” try to keep everyone laughing. You know I’m not doing this just for the “halibut.” These puns are an annual event. You may wonder, “”Water” you doing these for, Nadia?” My answer is, “These puns are a big “tank” you for being in my life!” I have always said, “You are my “ray” of sunshine.” You make me want to “Carp-e” Diem, and not “flounder” around anymore. There’s nothing “fishy” about this. My “sole” is truly in making up these puns!

Crochet Tutorial: Leaf Applique

I know you are “falling” for some of these “unbe-leaf-ably” silly puns. It helps to create good “chemis-tree” between us when we can “photo-sympathize” with how lame they can become. I know it’s “over-ELM-ing,” but we can still laugh together. I hope it’s “OAK-kay” that I continue to post until I get “stumped.” Even then I won’t “leaf” you “hanging” as I “branch” out and try to be more punny!
