How to: Make Homemade Vanilla Extract

Do you like to bake?

When you bake as much as I do, it is very easy to go through baking ingredients on a regular basis. I purchased very good vanilla extract for a pretty penny and I am always running out! It’s too much money when I can make my own!

Let’s get started!

Homemade Vanilla Extract

2 ingredients.

6-8 Madagascar Vanilla beans per 8 oz. bottle. Find Vanilla Beans HERE. Find the bottles HERE.

Vodka (You can also use Bourbon or Rum each one having a slightly different flavor).
**the alcohol draws out the best flavor in your vanilla bean but you can make your recipe without
by substituting vegetable glycerin for the alcohol.

Directions:

For 6 to 8 beans per 8 oz. bottle.

I slice my beans down the center the long way to release fragrance and flavor of the vanilla bean paste see photos below). Place the vanilla beans into clean 8 oz. bottles. I found my bottles on Amazon HERE. You must cover the beans completely with Vodka so they are submerged-approximately 8 oz. of vodka per bottle. Keep in mind, the vodka has to be 70 proof or more. (I found 80 proof on sale 😂).

Cap bottles tightly. Shake gently to infuse flavors. Store away and let sit for at least 8 weeks.

Try to shake bottles as often as possible to insure that the flavors continue to blend-at least once a week. After 8 weeks the vanilla will be ready to use. The longer you wait the better the flavor- 4 to 6 months is actually optimal. Use in all your baking recipes that call for vanilla extract! Enjoy!

Each summer, I love to visit the Farmer’s Market and purchase local produce. Two years ago, we visited a booth where the vendor had jars of “cowboy candy”. Curious, I bought a jar. Fuad ate it all in one sitting! I vowed to try to make my own version when I had a chance.

Fast forward to today and I decided to finally give it a try. Here is my recipe and tips for making, AND canning, jars of Cowboy Candy.

Let’s get started:

To start, this recipe is based upon 2lbs of jalapeños. You can adjust your recipe to make it more or less as desired.
Before you begin, please be sure to have your canning jars clean and ready. Wash your jars thoroughly and COMPLETELY rinse. Submerge them onto a rack in boiling water for 10 minutes as your last step of sanitization.

Recipe:

Ingredients:
Jalapeno Peppers (I used approx. 2lbs or 1kg) I had around 40-50 jalapenos from the farmer’s market
4 cups of white granulated sugar
2 cups of Apple Cider Vineagar
2 tsps of tumeric powder
2 tsps of ginger powder
3 teaspoons of chili powder
Dash of kosher salt

Instructions:
~Remove stems and cut your jalapenos into thin slices. I didn’t measure but approx. 1/4 inch coin slices worked well.
~Combine all your sugar, vineagar, and spices in a pan. Bring this to a rolling boil and cut the heat to simmer.
~Stir until your sugar dissolves and makes a syrup. Add your pepper slices to the syrup and coat thoroughly.
~Mix them completely and bring to a rolling boil once again.
~Once boiling, reduce heat to simmer and cook for about 5 minutes or until your jalapenos soften and begin to darken in color.
~With a slotted spoon, remove jalapenos from your syrup and place into clean, prepared jars. filling up to 1/2 inch from top. Shake and wiggle jar so peppers settle leaving more room to add as needed.
~Once each jar has been filled, pour the syrup over peppers in each jar. Leave about 1/4 inch from top, being sure all are covered.
~Cover and secure lid. Wipe the outside of jar and lid clean because syrup is STICKY!
~Place your secured jars of peppers into a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Jars should pop to insure they have sealed correctly. If your jar lid does not pop, don’t worry! The peppers are still good but storage is best in the fridge and eaten within a few weeks.
~Properly canned jars can be stored in cool dry place for up to a year.

This Cowboy Candy can be served over cream cheese and spread on crackers, over burgers, nachos and more! They are sweet with a punch of heat!

We share our table and time. A beautiful way to dress up the table is to make these lovely potholders to protect the tabletop from the hot food. Disclaimer The Corner to Corner stitch has some small openings in the stitch. This is ONLY for protecting your table and NOT for using to grab hot dishes from the oven. These are made from cotton and would also work as washcloths. Any way you wish to use these, they make a wonderful gift.

Row 3: Turn your work, Ch 5, HDC in 3rd Ch from hook and each of the next 2 Chs. I’m “grape-ful” that we are about to wind down another year of puns! Everyone has done a “grape” job with sharing even more puns and projects along the way. I think we all did a whole “bunch” for “raisin” awareness how punny Valentine’s Day can be. I was a bit “crushed” and practically let out a little “wine” when I was struggling with ideas for this segment. Now, I am “raisin” the roof as we near the finish line! I believe this year we kept “raisin” the bar with these “grape” punny ideas! Together we make a “grape” bunch!

Leaf:
With Green
Ch 7
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, SC in next, HDC in next, DC in next, HDC in next, SC in last, ch 2, continue to work on the opposite side of the foundation chain, SC in the same ch as your last SC, HDC in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, SC in next st, Sl st in last. Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Assembly:

Thanks a *melon* everyone, for indulging me with these puns!! These are my love letters for MY Valentine! As Nate and I pre*pear* 🍐 for our wedding next month, all I *peel* is happiness. We do our *berry* best to handle all the wonderful chaos coming our way. But with that, comes a bit of stress. Sometimes when I feel a tad *melon-choly* I think *honey dew* you want to just run away? Nate might say, “Haha, *Orange* you cute? 🍊 Sorry, but we *cantaloupe*.” He really is a *peach*! We do make the perfect *pear*, and he truly is my one in a *melon*. He holds the *kiwi* to my heart! 🥝 During all this planning crochet has been MY escape from all the *fruitiness*! It’s *plum-believable* how much I enjoy a crochet respite and making up these silly puns along the way. This easy peasy *lemon squeezy* 🍋 Melon Scrubby 🍉 has helped keep me from going *bananas*! *Lime* sure a few of you are even *raisin* your eyebrows at how far I can take these play on words and correlate it to my projects! This is the Let’s Bake a Cake Apron! During this time of year, lots of homes are busy with the hustle and bustle of the season! This great smock is made with the amazing Red Heart Yarns in Strata, and works up beautifully to provide you the best cover-up around when you are hard at work baking!

Materials:

Get the full kit of supplies here!!

–Red Heart Yarns Strata in Teal
–Red Heart Yarns Strata in White
–Red Heart Yarns Strata in Red
(400 yards total of yarn)
–K-6.50mm Crochet Hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors

NOTES:
-Use a smaller hook to make these smaller
-Use a bigger hook to make these bigger
-This is a repeat pattern
-The one I made is 22 inches long. The straps provide versatility to make it longer or shorter
-We are making all the pieces separate and sewing them together
-To make these bigger, chain as many as you need for each section
-Make more or less rows to make this shorter or longer.

Special stitches:
Ch(s): chain(s)
YO: Yarn Over
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SK: Skip
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
Shell: 3 DC in same stitch

Pattern:

Straps: Make 2 in White
Ch 5
Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (4 sts)
Row 2-60: SC in each st across, ch 1, turn (4 sts)
Fasten off, Weave in all ends.

Top:
Chain any amount or
Ch 27
Row 1: DC in 4th ch from hook and across, turn. (25 sts)
Row 2-14: Ch 3 (counts as DC), DC across, turn. (25 sts)
SC around entire piece.
Fasten off with LONG TAIL for sewing.
With White:
Attach yarn to top right, ch 1, sc in same st, * Shell in next, sc in next, repeat from * across. Fasten off weave in ends.

Sash:
Ch 9
Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (8 sts)
Row 2-130: SC in each st across, ch 1, turn (8 sts)
Fasten off, Weave in all ends.

Bottom:
Ch 52
Row 1: DC in 4th ch from hook and across, turn. (50 sts)
Row 2-15: Ch 3 (counts as DC), DC across, turn. (50 sts)
SC around entire piece.
Fasten off with LONG TAIL for sewing.
With White:
Attach yarn to top right, ch 1, sc in same st, * Shell in next, sc in next, repeat from * across. Fasten off weave in ends.

Pockets: Make 2
Ch 13
Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (12 sts)
Row 2-16: SC in each st across, ch 1, turn (12 sts)
Fasten off with long tail for sewing
With White:
Attach yarn to top right, ch 1, sc in same st, * Shell in next, sc in next, repeat from * across. Fasten off weave in ends.

Assembly:
Sew all pieces together. See video tutorial for visual instructions.

Geared towards the beginner, this simple cotton face cloth is a great starter project for the crochet novice. A set of cotton washcloths make a lovely handmade gift that will be well received by anyone. Just recently, I made some homemade bars of soap and gave these as gifts to some of my friends. Pair it with a bar of homemade soap or a pump cleanser, and you have the perfect set that is sure to please. I love my cotton washcloths! I use them for all kinds of different things, washing dishes, face cleansing, wiping down dusty surfaces, dusting out the car, wiping up spills in the kitchen, the list goes on! Enjoy making this dishcloth!

-Peaches & Cream yarn in “Good Earth”
-Size G6-4.25mm crochet hook
-Yarn Needle
-scissors

Ch: chain
YO: Yarn over
Sl st: slip stitch
SC: Single Crochet
EDC: Extended-Double Crochet

Notes:
Extended Double Crochet Explained: yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch from the previous row, yarn over and pull through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over pull through 2 loops. (It’s basically a regular double crochet just going into the skipped stitch from the previous row)

Pattern:
Ch 38

Row 1: sc in 2^nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch, repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn

Row 2: sc in first st, *EDC in skipped ch from foundation row, sc in next st, repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: sc in first st, *ch 1, sk EDC from previous row, sc in next sc, repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 4: sc in first st, *EDC in skipped st from previous row, sc in next st, repeat from * across, ch 1, turn.

Rows 5-32: (or until your piece measures 9 or 10 inches) Repeat rows 3 & 4

Continue to sc around the whole piece.

Fasten off, weave in ends.
