Whale, Whale, Whale, what do we have here??!

Recently, a catalog arrived in my mailbox with a unique selection of gift items for all ages. In typical fashion, I often find myself thinking about how to make similar items using crochet.

I fell in love with these darling booties that were similarly made out of fabric and set out to create a crochet pair designed only using yarn!

We all derive inspiration from various sources, but it isn’t always possible to recreate each design substituting yarn as fiber of choice but thankfully, this adorable pair of booties turned out to be quite the exception!

I hope you enjoy making your very own for a special infant. I give tips for increasing the sizing for any age in the video tutorial.

Free Crochet Pattern: Color Pop Baby Blanket

I wanted to create an unconventional piece for a baby. I have somebody close to me that is having a baby soon and I was inspired to think outside the box with this amazing Color Pop Baby Blanket. Steering away from the “traditional” pastel colors or pinks and blues for gender specifications, I wanted to create something that is gender neutral as the mother and father do not know the baby’s gender.

Using that inspiration and that element of surprise, I wanted to make something that just WOW’s the nursery and the arrival of this new baby. This amazing piece started to form from a small creative idea that I had.

This bright and colorful blanket combines a variety of stitches to give rich texture with a cheerful *pop* of color in the stripes! I framed the entire piece with a crocheted pom border as well. This border is very reminiscent of the 1970’s trend, but I have added new life to the retro look. It is fabulous!

Not only will this be a great addition to any nursery, but it would serve as a secondary purpose of being a great play throw to have to crawl around on the floor with. There are so many sensory textures.

In this baby blanket, I used popcorn stitches, granny stitches, double crochets, single crochets, cluster stitches, puff stitches, and treble crochets. You can even make this blanket bigger to make an afghan or even a full bedspread! Get creative!

You can use any colors you like, so if you know the gender of the baby, you could make this in a variety of hues of one color or make this in one solid color. The possibilities are endless! I can’t wait to see what you create! This was such a fun project!

NOTES:
-You can make this blanket any size. Use the Afghan Size Guide in this Blog Post
-The measurements for my blanket came out to be approximately 47 inches X 45 Inches
-You can make this blanket any size by making your beginning chain an even number.
-You can use any colors you want. I used a Worsted Weight, Size 4 Medium Yarn but you can use any Double Knitting Yarn or any Aran Yarn as well.
-This blanket took me approximately 1 month to complete (But I did not work on it continuously)
-You do not have to change color so often, but sewing in those pesky ends is a nightmare. Be sure to sew them in as you go, but if you are not changing color as often as I do in the video tutorial, you can carry your yarn up the rows on the sides because when we make our border, we cover the sides anyway.
-Ch 3/Ch4 at the beginning of a row counts as a stitch unless otherwise specified (See video tutorial for explanation, especially when working treble crochet rows)
-If you do not have the same exact stitch count as me (if you are off by a few stitches, do not worry about it, it is OK, the border will hide any imperfections on the edges)

Special stitches:
Ch(s): chain(s)
YO: Yarn Over
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SK: Skip
SC: Single Crochet
HDC: Half-Double Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
TR: Treble Crochet
LDC2TOG: Long Double Crochet Decrease (Work a Double Crochet Decrease in the previous row, working around chain space)
PC: Popcorn (4 DC in st, remove hook from loop, insert hook in 1st dc of grouping, put loop back on hook and pull through stitch. Popcorn made)
PS: Puff Stitch: *YO, insert hook into st, YO, pull through, repeat from * until you have 7 loops on your hook. YO pull through all 7 loops.

Repeat the same concept of row 2 and row 3 until you make your square big enough. End on an odd row. I ended mine on row 7.

Assembly Step:
Once you have all 4 squares complete and as big as you want them to be, single crochet them together then continue on to the border.

Rnd 2: Attach new color in any ch 2 sp, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc in same sp; ch 1, * work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next sp (corner made); ch 1, repeat form * twice more, ending with 3 DC in beginning ch 2 sp where we started. join. Fasten off. (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Assembly Step:
See video tutorial for instructions on how to sew your squares together to make the top of the dress.

Skirt:
Rnd 1: On the back, Attach color in any ch 2 sp of any granny square. Ch 3, 2 DC in same sp, 3 DC in each sp around. Sl st to beginning ch 3. (90 DC)
Rnd 2-19: CH 2 (does not count as st), DC in each st around. Sl st to beginning DC. (90 DC)
You can make more rounds if you want to make this longer.
Fasten off, Weave in ends.
Rnd 20: (Last round): attach yarn in any st, ch 1, sc in same st, *sk 2 sts, 5DC in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, repeat from *around. Sl st to beginning sc.

-You may use any size thread and any size hook to make this. Just know that it will turn out larger or smaller, but this project goes off measurements, so you can use any type of yarn to achieve this look.

Assembly: Sew up the backside of the bonnet with the beginning long strand of yarn we made when we created our slip knot.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to dress a baby up like a little fashionista! Just a hook, some yarn, and of course, some fur to make these trendy Booties with the Fur! The whole nursery will be lookin’ at her! Haha I crack myself up! (I hope you get this joke!) anyway, this is my version of mini infant Uggs.

Make your princess a pair of these adorable booties today!! It’s perfect in time for the cooler season. These booties will dress up any outfit and will stun so many when they find out they were handmade!! The pattern shown in the video is a very simplistic pattern that you can make in an afternoon. This is not difficult at all! It would be great for any crocheter!!

You can adapt this pattern to make these booties with or without fur. This is a pattern for ONLY 0-3 Months size. I do explain how to make these a tad bigger at the end of the video tutorial.

Many times I stop to admire vintage baby clothing that I see in thrift shops and antique stores. I marvel over the craftsmanship of some of the old-fashioned designs, and I try to find ways to revive those patterns to keep the antiquity, yet add a little bit of modern feel. Today’s project is one such item. This baby bonnet is reminiscent of days gone by. This would make the perfect gift as part of a newborn layette. With a few modifications, you can make this for either gender.

Feel free to add some embellishments such as a small flower on the design to make it more feminine, or a bow would be darling! You can interchange your ribbon with lace or a different color ribbon. You could add a little button for a more masculine look. Get creative with yours! This timeless look and classic design will sure to please anyone and will look precious on any baby, boy or girl.

Materials:
–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (Worsted Weight)
Color used: Aran
–Size I-5.50mm crochet hook
–Yarn Needle
–scissors

Ch: chain
YO: Yarn over
Sl st: slip stitch
HDC: Half double crochet
FLO: Front Loop Only
BLO: Back Loop Only

Notes:
This bonnet starts working in rounds, then is worked in rows.

Bonnet Pattern: Work this entire part in the BLO!
ch 2
Rnd 1: 9 hdc in 2^nd ch from hook. Sl st to beginning st, ch 1 (9)

Rnd 2: HDC 2 in each st around. Sl st to beginning st. ch 1 (18)

Rnd 3: HDC 2 in first st, HDC in next st, *HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next st, repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning st. ch 1. (27)

Rnd 4: HDC 2 in first st, HDC in next st, *HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning st. Ch 1. (36)

Rnd 5: HDC 2 in first st, HDC in next st. *HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 3 sts, repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning st. ch 1. (45)

Rnd 6: HDC 2 in first st, HDC in next st, *HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 4 sts, repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning st. ch 1. (54)

Now working in rows:
Side of bonnet:
Row 1: in BLO, HDC in next 50 sts. Leave last 4 sts unworked., ch 1 turn (50)
Row 2: in FLO, HDC across, ch 1 turn (50)

Row 3: in BLO, HDC across, ch 1 turn. (50)

Rows 4-8: Repeat rows 2 & 3 ending on a repeat of row 2.

Scallop edging:
sc in first st, skip 2 sts, *5dc in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, repeat from * across ending with sc in last st.

Tassels:
attach yarn to last st of row before scalloped edge.

Ch 31, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook and across whole ch.

Fasten off once you get back to beginning where you attached.

Weave in ends. Repeat for other side of bonnet.

Weave ribbon around edge of bonnet through row right before scalloped edge letting it hang down the length of the tassels.
