Crochet Tutorial: Tic Tac Toe Game and Tote

Summer is here and the kids are home all day long! What better way to bring in the summer than with great activities that don’t require the TV or any electronic devices.

Do you have a roadtrip planned? How about a day at the beach? Camping anyone? No matter where you go, even if it is just outside to your back yard, this totable Tic-Tac-Toe game board will promise loads of entertainment for all ages. Perfect for around the campfire when you are hanging out with the kids, perfect to pull out at the beach for some fun in the sand, perfect for picnics where you can open this up for some competition across the picnic table. There is nothing like an old fashioned game of Tic-Tac-Toe to bring on a some competitive spirit!

This is the perfect solution to long boring “I don’t have anything to do” blues! This game board easily cinches up into a bag or satchel and stores all the game pieces. I would also suggest that you can put velcro on the back of the X’s and O’s as well as the squares to provide more stability. Make the O’s in one team color, the X’s in a rival color and make this a sport related rivalry game! The possibilities are endless! There are so many options with this game board!

Ch 62
Row 1: DC in 4th Ch from hook and across, turn. (60)
Row 2: Ch 3 (Counts as DC), DC in each st across. turn. (60)
Rows 3-31: Repeat Row 2
Be sure your piece is square, if it is not, do more or less rows to make it square.
Continue to SC around entire piece.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Assembly:
Make a very long chain and weave it around the outer edge of the whole board and tie together. (This is the drawstring)
Surface crochet straight lines to make the Tic-Tac-Toe Lines (See video tutorial for visual instructions)

Rnd 1: SC in 1st ch to form a ring, SC in each ch around. (21)
Rnd 2: [2SC in next st, SC in next 2 sts] 7 times. (28)

First and Second Arm of the X:

For first piece, fasten off. For 2nd Piece, DO NOT fasten off

This next part is Attaching the First and Second Piece (See video tutorial for this part)
Rnd 8: SC around current piece, continue to SC in each st of the other piece. (24 sts)

Sew the hole between the arms closed (See video tutorial for visual instructions)
Next part is creating the third arm of the X
Rnd 10: SC in 12 sts, Sk the last 12 sts. (12)

Assembly:
Stuff the piece of what you have done so far then continue with round 15

Rnd 15: [SC2TOG] 6 times.
SC 1st and 4th sts together. Fasten off.

Next part is creating the 4th arm of the X
Attach yarn to the free stitch on round 9
Rnd 10-14: SC in each st around.
Stuff the rest of the X then go onto the last round.
Rnd 15: [SC2TOG] 6 times.
SC 1st and 4th sts together.
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Assembly:
Tie a string around the center of the X to cinch it in to create an X letter.
Weave in all ends.

Now that Halloween is here, I have compiled all the patterns in one place! Each piece to the costumes are here for you to create.

Link

Link to the Past Hat

The Link to the Past Hat is a great stocking cap for cold weather, holidays, or cosplay costumes. Follow this link to make your hat.

Elf Ears

Elfin Ears are a must in the Link and Zelda Costume! They can also work for many other fun costume ideas!! This fun and easy pattern is the perfect detail to give your outfits a fantasy look!!

Chain Link Tunic

The Chain Link Tunic is the lining under Link’s main Pullover. This tunic is not only a great detail in this costume, you can modify this to be a swimsuit cover-up or as a mesh top over a dress. Lots of versatility with this piece!

Fingerless Gloves

Link’s Fingerless Gloves were made from my Harry Potter gloves you can find here. By changing the colors and adding a few more rows, they worked perfectly for this costume! Change them up to match your winter gear and make your own!

Link to the Past Pullover Vest

Link to the Past Pullover Vest is the green shirt Link wears over the Chain Link Tunic. This is the main part of the costume for your Link Character. Don’t need a costume? Use this pattern and make it into a Baha Hoodie, Vest, or Poncho!

Aside from these patterns I created to complete the Link costume, there were additional pieces I created or used to finish the entire ensemble.

For Link, I found the perfect wig on Amazon and you can find it here. It worked out perfectly and honestly transformed Nate into Link (or Justin Bieber depending on who you ask! LOL!!)

For the sashes, I just chained an amount that was long enough to fit around Nate, then I double crocheted across, chained up 3, and double crocheted across for a second row. Then I fastened off and sewed it together. I did this for both the belt and the shoulder sash.

I just had Nate pick up the grey turtleneck and khaki pants at a thrift store. For less than $10.00 it was his contribution to this costume. Now he has a shirt for work and a pair of khaki pants he can wear again! It’s a win/win!!

For the leg warmers I modified this boot cuff pattern and made them longer. See the video tutorial for these boot cuffs to make the leg warmers longer.

The boots were an old pair we had on hand.

I did pin the Elf Ears on the hat with safety pins and used pins to also secure the sash in place.

I used cardboard, grey acrylic craft paint, and felt for the sword.

Zelda

Destiny Headband

Zelda’s Head piece can be found here. This can be used for any princess outfit and can be modified as a crown or even a fashion piece. Change the colors and make it your own!

The Fairy Tunic

The Fairy Tunic was the last piece I made. Unfortunately, I made this slightly larger than I needed, but it worked perfectly to fit over my Zelda “dress” that I found at a thrift store. Since I dress modestly, I also wore a long sleeve white shirt, so having made it a tad bigger worked in my favor since I had to wear it over everything.

Princess Shoulder Armor

The Princess Shoulder Armour can be found in this blog. I crocheted around wire in this tutorial and it is a great demonstration on how easy it is to make your crochet pieces mold-able allowing you to shape your design. One tip: beware of tiny wire poking out. Watch those ends or you might get poked with a wire! OUCH!

Elf Ears

Once again, The Elf Ears are a must in the Link and Zelda Costume! They can also work for many other fun costume ideas!! This fun and easy pattern is the perfect detail to give your outfits a fantasy look!!

Princess Costume Gloves

Princess Costume Gloves are another fun detail to complete this costume. I add detail to give some fun authenticity, but these can be modified for any costume or make them for your personal use by changing the color and adding other embellishments!

Aside from these patterns I created to complete the Zelda costume, there were additional pieces I created or used to finish the entire ensemble.

I wrapped my hair in white yarn strands. As I studied the Zelda character, I found in most sketches, she had two lengths of hair wrapped in the front. I emulated this as best as I could as I typically cover my hair. This was the best way to accomplish that.

Zelda’s skirt was a second hand wedding dress I found at the thrift store for $8.99. It had some jewel design on the bodice so I tried to work it to my advantage. I used grey acrylic craft paint to draw a similar design along the bottom of the dress which I found in most of the cosplay drawings I studied while trying to create this costume.

I wore a white long sleeve shirt underneath my dress and top as a personal choice. Most costumes I studied, had NO sleeves, but it works both ways.

I used cardboard and felt to create her dress panel that hangs down the front. I attached it to a hanging embellishment – The Destiny Headband. I used safety pins to secure it to the inside of the tunic I wore.

I wore grey boots as I noticed that Zelda often wears combat boots in the video game.

Final Thoughts

When Nate and I were deciding on costume ideas, I found this cosplay ensemble to be most challenging project yet. Nate is a gamer; I am not. I struggled to give these costumes authenticity as I was learning as I go. I hope I gave these characters the homage and respect they deserve. I had so much fun in the creative process and getting caught up in learning about this video game added to the thrill. I really hope it makes you as happy as it made us to dress up and wear these wonderful costumes. It was worth every moment to make them. We won BEST IN SHOW in our annual family Halloween costume contest, and we were awarded the Golden Pumpkin! We also won second place in a community costume contest and won a $50 gift certificate! It has been such a fun journey! Thanks for coming along with us!

Here is the latest piece of the cosplay costumes I am creating. My Link to the Past pullover vest is Part of Nate’s costume. We will be doing a full reveal on Saturday October 28, 2017. For those who are working with me on this costume, here is the latest addition to my ensemble! My Princess Armor for the shoulders is a powerful detail in the overall costume and will definitely help make this outfit look that much more authentic!

As these pieces come together toward my final creation, it has made me more excited to finish! Slowly but surely, this outfit will come to fruition as I work toward this masterpiece which is sure to WOW!

Jewel Circles:
Make 3 in Red Heart Super Saver in Delft Blue
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 6 SC in 2nd Ch from hook. (6)

Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Assembly step:
For the lines on the inner shoulder pieces, you can easily chain about 15 and sew on the chains to the shoulder piece. (See video and photos for visual guide) You can embellish your shoulder pieces as much as you want. In the video tutorial I added 2 lines to each inner shoulder piece.
Sew on blue jewel to center of inner shoulder piece.
Sew Inner shoulder piece to outer Shoulder piece. Round the outer shoulder piece to fit around the inner shoulder piece.
Do the same thing for both shoulders.

Front Center pieces:

Crescent Pieces: Make 2 in Red Heart Soft in the color Wheat
Ch 16
Row 1: SC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and in the next 2 Chs, HDC in next 3 chs, DC in next 3 Chs, HDC in next 3 Chs, SC in last 3 Chs, CH 1, turn.
Row 2: Sl st in first 3 sts, 2 HDC in next 3 sts, 2 DC in next 3 sts, 2 HDC in next 3 sts, Sl st in last 3 sts, ch 1, turn.

Do not fasten off. Add wire around edge and SINGLE CROCHET around the entire piece.

If you are following me on my blog or any social media, you will recall that I released my Link to the Past Phrygian Cap last week as Part One of the Halloween cosplay costume designs that I am creating for Nate and myself.

Today, Part Two of the costume set, is this Destiny Headband. This is a bit of a tedious process using thin thread and crocheting around wire, but the results are worth the efforts! Continue to stay tuned to more great patterns along the way to complete one or both of my costume series!

Not into the costume idea? Make a headband with just leaves! You could also use the leaf applique separately for flowers or anywhere you would need to add a decorative embellishment.

As many of you may recall, each year I design, create, and model an EPIC cosplay costume ensemble for Halloween. If you have been following my blog, you remember 2 years ago my Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter Costumes here or last year, The Beauty and The Beast costumes here.

Each year I try to challenge myself to something new. I began my 2017 costumes over the weekend and will release pieces over the next few months just in time for Halloween. Each video tutorial and written pattern will be FREE, and although many patterns will be related to the costume ensemble, several will be great to create on their own!!

One such piece is this Link to Past Stocking Cap. This unique Phrygian Cap is the first in a series of several videos that will be made to complete our costumes as Link and Zelda!! For those who are on my social media, it didn’t take long for the guesses to come in and easily many of you knew immediately what I was in the process of creating.

This design is very versatile. If you are not a fan of the video game or gaming scene, this can be made in any color as just a stocking hat in time for cooler weather. You can even use two tones by making your reverse single crochet stitches in a complimentary color to the hat. Red and White would make a peppermint swirl, or Red and Green would make a cute holiday hat. Removing the side laces and adding a bell on the end of the conical shape would make a darling elfin hat!

There are many fun ways to explore broadening this pattern to other great creations! For those of you who are on board to see what I create for Halloween, stay tuned for the next several weeks as I reveal more pieces for this EPIC cosplay creation. Perfect for the gamer, this Minecraft Creeper hat is an easy pattern to work up in a few short hours! My video tutorial demonstrates the pattern for the beanie as well as the character detail.

I was fortunate enough to have Nate model a sample, but in the video tutorial, I demonstrate how to make a toddler/child size hat. You can go on to increase your stitches to make this larger after round 7. See the notes section for further instructions.

Crochet Tutorial: Nintendo NES Controller Pixel Blanket

486 pixels were stitched over the past few months and each one was made with love. The creation of this pixel blanket was made to be given to Nate in time for his birthday today, March 30th, 2016.

Nate is a video game enthusiast and early on I decided to create something epic for his special day. My idea formulated around a discussion about vintage video games we each played as kids. He loved Zelda, and mentioned the Nintendo NES system as a favorite. Of course, this had me scrambling in my creative way to find the perfect project to bring this favorite retro past-time to life. Behold the creation of the Nintendo NES Controller Pixel Blanket!

I searched the internet for ideas on how to bring my vision to fruition and came across the blog from Repeat Crafter Me who created a Cupcake Pixel Blanket and I went into crazy creative overdrive!!

I decided to try to graph this project out on paper and found a photo of this controller by just doing a Google Search. Once the graph was made, it was a series of mathematics calculations to figure out how much each square would equal in a measurement of inches. I wanted the overall size to be about the size of a queen-size bed. The calculations for this blanket equal the equivalent of 54 inches wide x 80 inches long.

Once the size was determined, then the calculation of how many pixels of each color would have to be figured out.

All these calculations can be found in the pattern below. Each square has to be individually created based on these initial calculations. It was easiest for me to work color by color. I began with grey, black, red, then lastly white. Once each square was made, I began to lay them out to determine if the vision in my mind was exactly what I pictured. This was the part where I held my breath hoping that I hadn’t made any mistakes in my calculations! Below you will see the pixels all laid out on the floor.

Once the pixels were laid out and my design was satisfactory, the process of sewing these tiny squares was my next major step. Working in rows, I worked my way across first, then down, as shown in the tutorial video. Soon this project began to come together in the perfect work of art I envisioned!

I added a few details to enhance this design. Instead of pixels, I crocheted two circles for the buttons on the controller and a crochet chain to emulate a cord coming from underneath the controller going to an invisible console. Once complete, this labor of my love became one of the most amazing creations I have made thus far. It was, by far, the best gift and was received with delight!

–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Black
–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in White
–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Gray Heather
–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Cherry Red
Amount: Black: 760 yards White: 1400 yards Gray: 740 yards Red: <200 yards
–Size H-5.00mm Crochet Hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors

NOTES:

-You can use any yarn brand you want, as long as you stick to the colors White, Black, Gray, and Red to make the pixel photo in the end as long as it’s an 8ply or 10ply yarn (worsted weight/double knitting).
-This took me a very long time to make. I started it in January 2016, but haven’t worked on it consistently, and I finished it on March 26th, 2016.
-You could use a smaller hook to make this smaller.
-This measures 80 inches across and 54 inches tall
-When you attach your squares in the back, they puff up making a 3D look to the pixels. It looks great!
-The Cord is optional, but the circle buttons need to be included to make the Pixel photo complete

Make 231 White
Make 5 Red
Make 107 Gray
Make 143 Black
Total Pixels: 486

Rnd 1: Chain 3 and make 2 DC in 3rd ch from hook, ch 1, 3 DC in same ch, ch 1, 3 DC in same ch, ch 1, 3 DC in same ch, ch 1 and join to the top of the ch 2, ch 2

Rnd 2: DC in same stitch as your ch 2, DC in next 2 stitches, [DC, ch 2, DC] in the ch 1 sp, DC in the next 3 stitches, [DC, ch 2, DC] in the next ch 1 sp, DC in the next 3 stitches, [DC, ch 2, DC] in the next ch 1 sp, DC in the next 3 stitches, [DC, ch 2, DC] in the next ch 1 sp, DC in last 3 sts, DC in corner and chain two and join to the first DC, ch 1

Rnd 3: SC in first 4 stitches, [SC, ch 1, SC] in corner, SC in next 5 stitches, [SC, ch 1, SC] in corner, SC in next 5 stitches, [SC, ch 1, SC] in corner, SC in next 5 stitches, [SC, ch 1, SC] in corner. Join to first st with an invisible join (see video tutorial)

Round 5: *Sc twice in next st, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * 5 times. (30)
Round 6: *Sc twice in next st, sc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * 5 times. (36)
Round 7: *Sc twice in next st, sc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * 5 times. (42)
