Crochet Tutorial: Unicorn Slippers

(150 yards/strand of Minty (300 Yards of Minty total), 364 yards/strand of White (700 yards of White total), 5 Yards of Pink, 10 Yards of Black)
–Red Heart Baby Econo Yarn in Newborn Prints (**Discontinued**) You can use any variegated yarn (150 yards)
–Red Heart Yarns Gleam in Creamy (10 Yards)
–G/6-4.25mm Crochet Hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors
–Stitch Marker
–Poly-fil for stuffing

NOTES:

-The written pattern has sole sizes for Small 5/6 US Women’s Shoe Size, Medium 7/8 US Women’s Shoe Size, and Large 9/10 US Women’s Shoe Size

-The video tutorial ONLY shows the MEDIUM size.

-The sole is made and then the back of the slipper is made and then the front of the slipper and embellishments are made. If you are making smaller or bigger sizes, follow the written pattern for the sole and then watch the video tutorial for help on making the back of the slipper and the front of the slipper.

-The front of the slipper is the same on ALL sizes. The back may be a little different because of the stitch counts.

-This pattern is written for one foot. Be sure to make enough pieces for two feet.

-Depending on how stuffed you want this slipper, you can stuff it as much as you need. The more you stuff, the more your foot will be pushed down into the sole.

Sole: With Minty, Use 2 Strands of yarn at the same time. (Make 2)
Ch 23
Round 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and across until last ch, 3 sc in last ch, sc along the opposite side, 2 sc in same st as 1st st. Sl st to 1st sc. (46 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 SC in 1st st, sc in next 8 sts, HDC in next 12 sts, 2 HDC in each of the next 3 sts, HDC in next 12 sts, SC in next 8 sts, 2 SC in last sts, Sl st to 1st sc. (52 sts)

Assembly:
Fold inward toward sole, sew along Row 1 of back of slipper making a tunnel. Stuff the tunnel with polyfil and sew open ends closed.

Make sure you have 39 sts free on all sizes. With White and 2 strands of yarn

Sew to black portion of eye.

Horn:
In Gleam yarn in Creamy, work in continuous rounds

Rnds 10-19: SC in each st around
Rnds 20-22: SL St in 4 sts, SC in 4 sts
Rnds 22-28: SC in each st around
Fasten off with long tail. Stuff it.
Sew to slipper behind eyes/horn.

Assembly step:
Sew all pieces to slipper. Embellish by embroidering the mouth and nose.
Add fringe to the piece behind the horn to make the mane.

Crochet Tutorial: Princess Costume

An enormous amount of improvising was done in the creation of this princess dress that I made for my Halloween costume. Nate and I are attending a costume party this year and I was all set to make sure that this was created in time. But boy, did I underestimate how hard it would be to make this ensemble! In the process, I ran out of yarn, I had to frog my work a few times, and actually shed a few tears. The skirt wasn’t as voluminous as I hoped, but you know what, it doesn’t matter anymore! I finished it, and I am getting passed the flaws to appreciate the work that went into making this. Overall, it may not be exactly what I imagined, but once in awhile a project takes on a life of its own and still turns out alright!

This pattern is for the basic dress design. However, you can change color. Add or subtract embellishments or details to customize your own costume. Pick a princess you love and go for it! Whether it be yellow like the one in this tutorial or pink, blue, a blue top with yellow skirt, green. Modifying this for any character can bring your costume to life!

Once the shell of the costume was made and the side panels added, I used similar colored tulle to enhance the sides giving the skirt full scallop look. I sewed the tulle in the sides and tucked it in the center then secured the entire piece with a center rose. I used the medium size rose flower from my Floral Dream Crown pattern.

Using a corset style lace-up, I used ribbon to create a closure for the shirt. Simply tying it down the back creates this look.

I wrapped tulle around the shoulders of the top and using a couple stitches, I secured it into place. I added another rose in the center bust area to tie in this design with similar details as the skirt.

I finished the shell of my princess skirt in the photo below. It was still a work in progress as I planned to add details and volume. I had a revelation after trying it on for sizing, that by itself, the shell works nicely for a basic maxi skirt. After trying it on I was like, “I would totally wear the skirt like this!”

–Lion Brand Yarns Modern Baby (173 yards each skein–10 skeins for Skirt, 2 skeins for top) (2,076 yards total)
–I-5.50mm Crochet Hook
–Yarn Needle

–Stitch Markers

NOTES:

-The pattern video tutorial starts at 8 minutes 14 seconds. The first 8 minutes are frequently asked questions and other information.
-You can use any cotton/acrylic/polyester yarn you want to use. As long as it’s a thinner and lighter weight yarn. Having so much yarn can result in a heavy skirt.

-This pattern is written for an adult size, but you can make it any size by chaining more or less. The top doesn’t have any multiple so you can chain as many as you need to in the beginning. The skirt is in a multiple of 14, so you can make your chain as big as you want as long as your count is in the multiple of 14. (I explain all this in the video if that is confusing)

-You can use a smaller or larger hook to make this smaller or bigger depending on your tension.

-For measurements and to learn how big mine turned out to be, watch the beginning of the video tutorial. For the top, I measure it as I go.

-This took me approximately 12 hours to complete fully.

Special stitches:
Ch(s): chain(s)
YO: Yarn Over
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl st: slip stitch
SK: Skip
SC: Single Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
DC3TOG: Double Crochet Decrease 3 stitches together
Shell: 5 DC in indicated stitch

Pattern:

If you have any confusion or difficulty with reading this pattern, please watch the video tutorial to have visual instructions.

Skirt:

Row 1: FDC 140 or any multiple of 14 that measures your hip measurement PLUS 6-10 extra inches.

Round 2: Form FDC round into a ring and slip stitch to the beginning FDC. (See video tutorial for visual instructions), ch up 2, DC in first 5 sts, *3 DC in next st, DC in next 5 sts, DC3TOG, DC in next 5 sts, repeat from * ending with DC3TOG.

Round 3: (See video tutorial for visual instructions at 20 minutes), Do not slip stitch to beginning, DC in first 5 sts, * 3DC in middle DC of 3DC grouping, DC in next 5 sts, DC3TOG, DC in next 5 sts, repeat from * around, do not slip stitch to beginning.

Continue working in continuous rounds.

Rounds 4-65: * DC in next 5 sts, 3DC in middle DC of 3DC grouping, DC in next 5 sts, DC3TOG, DC in next 5 sts, repeat from * around, do not slip stitch to beginning.

You can make this as long or short as you want just repeating the continuous pattern. Go onto the next step when when you are satisfied with the length.

Round 66: Skip the next st, sl st into the next st, ch 1, sc in same st, sk 2 sts, 5 DC in next st (shell made), *sk 2 sts, sc in next st, shell in next st, repeat from * around, sl st to beginning sc. Fasten off.

Waistband:
Attach yarn on any st around waist. Ch up 4. (Counts as TR), TR in each st around, sl st to ch up 4. Fasten off.
Weave ribbon through the TR’s to tighten waist.

Half Circle Side Panels: Make 6
Ch 4, sl st to 4th ch from hook to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as DC here and throughout), 9 DC into ring, turn. (10)
Row 2: Ch 3, DC in same st, 2 DC in each st across, turn. (20)
Row 3: Ch 3, 1 DC in each st across, turn. (20)
Row 4: Ch 3, DC in same st, [1 DC in next st, 2 DC in next st] Repeat across, turn. (30)
Row 5: Ch 3, 1 DC in each st across, turn. (30)

You can continue to make it longer if yours isn’t long enough.
Fasten off when finished.
Weave ribbon down the back (Optional: You could seam up the back by sewing it closed or crocheting it closed)

Straps: Make 2
Row 1: FDC 42 or an amount that measures from the back of your shoulder to the front of the shoulder (See video tutorial for visual instructions)
Row 2: Ch 2, DC across. Fasten off with long tail.
Sew to Top

Flower: Make 7

Before making your slip knot, leave a 6-8” tail;

ch 34

Row 1: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, [2 sc and 1 sl st] in first ch 1 sp, [3sc, 1 sl st] in each of the next 3 ch 1 sps, [3 hdc, 1 sl st] in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps, [4 hdc, 1 sl st] in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps, [4 dc, 1 sl st] in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps. Fasten off with long tail for sewing. Roll strip into a flower, stitch flower together at base.

It starts with a chill in the air and dew on the grass, the time of the year when we begin to add an extra layer for warmth. Why not do that in style for someone you love? With a touch of old-fashioned elegance and sophisticated elements of Jay Gatsby, The Classic Man Scarf is the perfect accessory for the man in your life. I have a personal bias with this particular model, being that he happens to be the man in MY life! This scarf is very versatile and can be worn in a multitude of ways as shown in these photos. The length provides possibility for many different looks.

I combined a variety of stitches and textures to create this lovely piece that is sure to please even the most fashion conscious individual. Using the waffle stitch, half double crochet ribbed stitches, and waves, this multi-textured scarf is a perfect design for anyone. My design was made with three colors of soft yarn giving it all the comfort and warmth needed when we can’t get away from the cold weather.

Whether it’s a cool autumn day and Jack Frost is nipping at your nose or there is a Polar Vortex chilling you to the bone, The Classic Man Scarf is the perfect accessory for all those times you need to keep yourself nice and toasty, but still look fantastic doing it!

-This scarf measures 66 inches (167 cm) long, but you can continue the repeat and make it bigger if you want.
-The main part (wavy stitch) of this scarf is in multiples of 14+2 so you can make this as big as you want.

Crochet Tutorial: Poppin’ Petals Purse

A couple of my favorite vices are handbags and shoes. I love a good bag! A nice tote that I can carry around with style! I can’t begin to tell you how many things I carry around in my purse! With that in mind, I decided to create a handbag with space and functionality in mind. Using a bit of creative ingenuity, I incorporated some thrifted macrame hoops and some old cable wire to help make this beautiful design and give it a unique shape.

For my prototype, I created it using Red Heart Yarn that I happened to pick up on a sale, but my recommendation would be to use a COTTON YARN or a cotton blend yarn. It’s not wrong to use any kind of yarn, you can make this any way you like, but for sturdiness and durability, a cotton yarn may work better in this project.

I added some fun embellishments, floral details on each end of the purse sides, a cute little tassel, as well as a wooden button for closure.

Feel free to modify this to your liking with your own personal touches. Keep in mind, the size of this bag can be changed, and I have all that information in the Notes section below.

This would make an amazing yarn bag! In fact, this bag perfectly accommodates a One Pound skein of yarn with ease (Tested and Approved!).

NOTES:
-This pattern is made with separate pieces and is seamed with crochet and sewing
-The video tutorial demonstrates a purse that is approximately 12 inches, but if you do more chains you can make this bigger. The video tutorial shares how to make this wider.
-To make this longer, just repeat rows 2-5 as many times as you want for the body of the purse.
-To make side rings with the flowers bigger, follow the math for the increases to make it bigger. If you need it to be smaller, stop increasing at any point.
-This took me about 2 days to make, but you could make this in one day if you work on it constantly.
-You can use any type of cotton or cotton blend yarn to achieve this style.

I’m feelin’ Pretty in Pink with this crop top!!

Every once in a while, I’m inspired by a fashionable clothing piece that I see online or in the store, and I’m struck by the possibility that I could make something like that. Has that ever happened to you?

Recently, I ran across a cute shrug on Pinterest that inspired me for this project. Although the item was knit, I felt I could create something similar using crochet. Best intentions often go astray because this project was more challenging than I anticipated when I sat down to design it in the studio.

Earlier this year, I purchased a beautiful Peruvian Pima Cotton from Wool and the Gang and had a summer clothing piece in mind when I chose this yarn. They had a sale on their Shiny Happy Cotton in Hot Pink, and when I bought it, I thought it would be cute for a summer top or a handbag. It was my textile of choice when creating this crop top. I was not disappointed. It worked up beautifully, even if the direction I started out in wasn’t where I ended up.

My design took on a life of its own, and in the process, I created this adorable lacy piece that I christened the name “The Sun-Kissed Crop Top” because of it’s openness in its pattern.

This top is perfect for wearing over a sundress, tank top, or it can make any fashion statement that you desire! You can continue to increase the bodice to create a swimsuit cover-up or longer tunic top. Also, please note, the dolman sleeves can be made longer. -The video tutorial demonstrates a size Small/Medium but if you do more chains you can make this bigger. The video tutorial shares how to make this wider.
-To make this longer, just repeat rows 2-5 as many times as you want.
-To make sleeves longer, just repeat the ribbing pattern until you are satisfied with the length.
-Mine measured 41 inches across (106cm) unstretched and 15 inches long (38cm) unstretched.
-Before making this piece, measure your waist, your neck line, and the length you want to make this so you can mark your stitches for sewing your pieces together.
-This took me about 2 days to make, but you could make this in one day if you work on it constantly.
-The beginning chain length is explained below in the pattern.
-You can use any type of cotton or cotton blend yarn to achieve this style.

Front and back panel: MAKE 2

Chain 99, 111, 123, 135 (if these chain amounts are not long enough, just add 12 chains to your piece until it measures the length you want it to be. Ex: chain 147, 159, 171)

Row 1: DC in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 chs, *ch 3, sk 3 chs, dc in next st, ch 3, sk 3 chs, dc in next 5 sts, repeat from * across ending with 3 dc, Turn.

Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + Ch 2), Sk the first 3 sts, *Shell in the next DC, ch 5, sk 5 dc, repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, dc in last st, Turn.

Row 3: Ch 6 (counts as dc + ch 3), *5 DC in next ch 1 sp, ch 3, dc in center ch of ch 5 sp, ch 3, repeat from * across, ending with ch 3, dc in last st, Turn.

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 3dc in same st as ch up 3, *ch 5, sk 5 dc, shell in next dc, repeat from * ending with 4dc in last st.

Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 DC in same st as ch up 3, *Ch 3, sk 3 sts, DC in center ch of ch 5 sp, ch 3, 5 DC in ch 1 sp of shell, repeat from * ending with 3 dc in last st.

Rows 6-13: Repeat rows 2-5 twice (You can repeat rows 2-5 as many times as you want to make this as long as you want, I just did 2 repeats to make it the length you see in the photos)

Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Once you have your two panels made, sew them together. Watch the video tutorial at 33 minutes and 15 seconds for measurements and how to make it centered so one sleeve isn’t longer than the other.

Once your pieces are sewn together, you can work on the sleeves:

Rnd 1: Attach yarn to under side of sleeve, ch 3, (counts as dc), DC an odd number around (including ch 3 in this count), I DC’d 28 sts so I had a total of 29 DC’s on this round. Sl st to ch 3 to join.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, DC2TOG all around, sl st to ch up 3 to join. (14 sts and a ch up 3)
Repeat this round if your sleeve isn’t tight enough around your arm. Then go on to rnd 3.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, DC in each st around, sl st to ch up 3 to join.

Rnd 4-8: Ch 3, FPDC in next st, BPDC in next st, repeat from * around. Sl st to ch up 3 to join.
Repeat this round as many times as you want to make your sleeve as long as you want.
Fasten off when you are satisfied with the length.
Repeat this step for other sleeve.
Weave in all ends.

Next steps are optional:

Pattern:

Small Flower: Make 4

Before making your slip knot, leave a 6-8” tail;

ch 12

Row 1: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2sc and 1 sl st, in first ch 1 sp, 3 sc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps. Fasten off with long tail for sewing. Roll strip into a flower, stitch flower together at base.

Medium Flower: Make 2

Before making your slip knot, leave a 6-8” tail;

ch 34

Row 1: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end.

Large Flower: Make 2

Ch 5, join with sl st to 5th ch from hook to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in ring, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 4 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 4 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st on the 1st sc. (16 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, (Ch 3, skip one st, sc on next st) repeat around, join. (8 ch-3 loops)

Rnd 3: sl st into first ch 3 sp, ch 1, [(Sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in ch-3 loop, sl st in sc] repeat around, join. (8 petals)

Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Center of flower:
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Fasten off, sew to center of Large flower

Extra Large Flower: Make 2

Before making your slip knot, leave a 6-8” tail;

Row 1: Ch 44 (Or any even number)

Row 2: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end.

Row 3: Ch 2, turn, skip the first stitch of the previous row, tr first ch sp, ch2, 2tr into same sp. 2DC, ch2, 2DC in each ch sp across. Fasten off and change color.

Row 4: [ch 3, 5dc] all in first ch 2 sp, *sk 2 sts and sc in between 3rd and 4th dc (see video tutorial for visual instructions), 6 dc in next ch 2 sp, repeat from * across. Fasten off. Roll strip into a flower, stitch flower together at base.

Leaf: Make 3
Ch 10
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next, hdc in next, dc in next 3, hdc in next, sc in next, sl st in last. fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Assembly Step:
Sew all pieces to your headband (See video tutorial for visual instructions), make it as fancy as you want!! TIP: Be sure to stretch out your headband when sewing on your pieces. That way the headband won’t show through when you put it on your head.

A very simple and elegant twist on a basic earring. Crochet jewelry is all the rave! Add a tiny floral embellishment to the back of your studs with this easy to make crochet thread flower!

Just in time for wedding season, craft shows, springtime, prom season, senior ball, or just for fun, these can be made in minutes! Just the right touch to your perfect outfit or dress!

You can make a singular flower as shown in the video tutorial, you can make multiples and layer them, you can change out the stud in the middle to a diamond, a jewel, a shape – it doesn’t need to be a silver ball stud. The possibilities are endless!!

Do you have a lot of scrap yarn? I am overrun by baskets of scraps left over from previous projects, and I often try to find fun and useful projects to use them. When you wear this, it will make you spin, dance, and walk with spring in your step, because it is *that* much fun to wear! Here are a few photos of my poncho and how I wore it. I matched it with jeggings and riders with a man’s denim shirt and a matching headscarf.

Comfortable and cozy, I am ready to go out on the town for the day! Bold! Colorful! Wild! The Pizzazz Poncho is all that and a bag of chips!!! I made this creation inspired by a photo I saw made by another crochet artist, but I added a bit of my own artistic spin!

This Pizzazz Poncho is the perfect project to make good use out of scraps. This colorful poncho is extremely versatile. With it’s array of color and texture you can pair this with any outfit to dress up or dress down.

Pizzazz Poncho

Materials:
-Approx. 1500 Yards of Scrap Yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarns)
-Size J-6.00mm Crochet Hook
-Yarn Needle
-Scissors

Ch 101 (or any odd number)

Row 1: SC in 4 sts at the back V neck part. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, SC across and sc into next 2 sts on last row of poncho, Turn.
Row 3-7: Repeat row 2 until you have 15 sts across. Sl st to next st on poncho and fasten off.

Rnd 1: Attach yarn on poncho row on the right side of back of collar *See video for placement* Ch 1, DC2TOG, DC to next Side of Poncho row, DC2TOG, DC in each st to the front V of neck, DC3TOG, DC in the rest of the sts around. Sl st to beginning

Rnd 2: Ch 1, SC2TOG, SC until you get to the next DC2TOG, SC2TOG at that point, SC until you get to the front V of neck, SC3TOG, SC in the rest of the sts around. Sl st to beginning.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, SC2TOG, ch 3, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, Repeat from * 2 times, ch 3, SC2TOG, **ch 3, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, repeat from ** until you get to the V of neck, SC3TOG, ***ch 3, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, repeat from *** until you get to the end. Sl st to beginning.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, DC in first st, * DC in ch 3 sp, ch 1, Repeat from * around. Sl st to beginning.

Rnd 5: (See video tutorial for visual instructions) Ch 1, SC2TOG, SC until you get to next side of poncho row, SC2TOG, SC until you get to the front V of neck, SC3TOG, SC in the rest of the sts aroud. Sl st to beginning.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, SC2TOG, SC until you get to next side of poncho row, SC2TOG, SC until you get to the front V of neck, SC3TOG, SC in the rest of the sts aroud. Sl st to beginning.

Fasten off, Weave in all ends.

Finishing:
SC around entire bottom of poncho. (See video for visual instructions)

Who else is ready for hoodies, bonfires, crisp cool air, hot cocoa, football, and beautiful fall colors? This time of the year brings to mind all things cozy, and that is the premise for my candy corn leg warmers!

These colors always bring to mind the harvest season, Halloween, and cooler days. Today’s tutorial shows how to create these great pair of leg warmers in striped yellow, orange, and white.

My original pattern developed out of a discovery I made at a thrift shop. While hunting through a basket of vintage jewelry, I stumbled across a pair of wooden maple leaf earrings. I immediately thought these would make great buttons, but what to pair them with?! After careful consideration, I decided to remove the backings and drill some button holes and transform these into an embellishment for these leg warmers!

These are SUPER easy to learn and you can adapt these to any size and any color you’d like! They do not have to be Halloween themed. You can make them one plain color, you can make them team sport colors, you can get as creative as you desire! The video shows how to change color to create this striped effect, but if you wish to continue in a solid tone, just follow the directions without the color changes.

Crochet Tutorial: Slouchy Hat

As many of you have seen, I cover my hair. When I go out for a quick run to the grocery store, I’ll throw on a beanie really fast and run out the door! My go-to hats are these super slouchy ones. Today’s video is on how to make one of these great projects.

When I’m out and about wearing this hat, I get so many compliments and people ask me where I got it. I love to tell them I made it myself, and you will too!

Whenever I have made my version of this hat, I always use yarn that has very vibrant colors and different variations of jewel tones. This example in today’s blog uses Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn in the Stained Glass color.

This super slouchy multicolored beanie can be worked up in an afternoon! I promise, you will get years of wear out of each hat you make! They make great gifts, not just to yourself, haha, but to others!

At the very end of the video tutorial, I explain how to make it smaller for child sizes. The written pattern is for a teen/adult sized hat.

You could add your own embellishments by adding buttons, a bow, or any other fashionable item to make it your own!

–Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable Yarn In Stained Glass (or any color you’d like!)
–Size K-6.50mm crochet hook
–Yarn Needle
–Scissors

NOTES:
-You will be working in continuous rounds, no slip stitching or chaining up after each round.
-Some crocheters have mentioned that this hat turned out a little smaller for them. Maybe going up a hook size or decrease to Round 23 or 24 and then jump to the instructions for Rounds 26-29.

Ch: chain
St: Stitch
Sl st: slip stitch
HDC: half double crochet
BLO: Back Loop Only
HDC2TOG: Half Double Crochet Decrease: Yarn over, go into the next st, yarn over, pull through, go directly into the next stitch, yarn over, pull through (You should have 4 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. HDC Decrease made.

Ch 2
Rnd 1: HDC 6 in 2nd ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: HDC 2 in each st. (12)
Rnd 3: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next st) 6 times. (18)
Rnd 4: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 2 sts) 6 times. (24)
Rnd 5: (HDC 2 in next st, HDC in next 3 sts) 6 times. (30)

Crochet Tutorial: Houndstooth Stitch Shawl

Houndstooth originated in Scotland in the 1800s. It originally was a woven fabric and over time became popular in fashion. It has undergone many revivals, but it has stayed true to its original classic pattern. Houndstooth is named because it resembles a canine tooth with its sharp edge. Sometimes it is called Dogstooth, and the miniature design is known as Puppytooth. Many designers use this pattern in high end fashion to this day. It’s Fall Fashion Week in New York which inspired me to create this Houndstooth Shawl–perfect for autumn weather and cool nights. When I originally set out to make this pattern, I expected this to be an incredible challenge, having never done the Houndstooth stitch before. But, after studying a few patterns online, I was able to quickly and very easily pick it up!

In no time, I was able to work up this great shawl!!

This is a very easy to follow video tutorial showing how to recreate the original Houndstooth in crochet form. Below, you will see the original Houndstooth pattern in woven fabric.

Here is a close-up of my crochet version of the same stitch. It looks so close and awesome!!

Once you have mastered this stitch following my tutorial, you may make some minor modifications to my shawl pattern to turn this project into so many great items. I talk a little bit in the video on how to make an infinity scarf, a traditional neck wrap scarf, a baby blanket, or even an afghan. The ideas are endless! All you need to do is adjust your chain amount when you start this project. You just need an odd number of chains.

Traditional Houndstooth is the contrasting pattern of black and white, but in the crochet world, anything goes! This project can be changed up in so many colorful ways than the traditional monochromatic design. Imagine, hot pink and white, purple and black, go wild with color!!

-2 skeins of each color (4 skeins in total) Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in White
–Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Black
–Size I-5.50mm Crochet hook
–Yarn needle
-Scissors

You can buy any of the items in this kit. Buy all or buy one item. Check it out to see the supplies you can get online to make this project!

Notes:
When changing colors do not cut your yarn. On your last dc, work the dc as normal but when you have the 2 loops left on your hook you will change your color and then YO and draw through both loops on the hook. You will then just take the unused color and crochet it along in the row. You will be changing color at the end of each row. (See video for visual instructions)

Ch 45 (Or any ODD number to make your own as wide as you want)

Row 1: *sc in the second ch from the hook, dc in the next, repeat from * across. Ending with a dc (change color and see special instructions for changing color) ch 1, turn. (44 sts)

Row 2: *sc in next dc, dc in next sc; repeat from * across (change color–See video for visual instruction) ch 1, turn (44 sts)

Repeat Row 2 for however long you want your piece to be. I made mine 113 rows.

Finish with a black row, and continue to sc around the entire piece. Fasten off, weave in all ends. Add a pin for embellishment. Enjoy!
